Writing is an essential skill that students will use and apply for the rest of their lives. Teaching students to become strong writers is a daily task and involves writing more than just an essay. Research indicates that by the middle school level students should be writing at least 60 minutes a day. A practice of daily writing helps build writing fluency that transcends across the curriculum. However, this can be a daunting task especially when students don’t like to write. In a time when writing is essential to the curriculum, how do we build a community of lifelong writers? While attending writing class, I learned about the 4 steps in writing, bases for revising, organizing, and connecting specific information, and I also learned about the different types of essays such as descriptive, narrative, process, cause and effect and argumentative essay. I have been a student at Milwaukee Area Technical College for 1 semester, and over the course of my enrollment I have grown and learned more that I knew prior to attending this writing course. Participating in this writing class has taught me so much more than stuff about literature and language, it has taught me another way of expressing myself. I have learned here how to write and express myself, how to think for myself, and how to find the answers to the things that I don 't know. Most importantly I have learned how important technique, outlines and organization are. My goal in this paper is to inform writers about how my writing skills have improved.
University Writing Center (UWC) and Academic Success Center (ASC) are two of the university facilities that help students enrich their academic experience. While UWC assists students in improving their written and oral communication skills through one to one consulting sessions, online resources, and workshops, ASC works to enhance students’ intellectual performance through academic coaching, supplemental instruction, drop-in tutoring sessions, and peer mentoring. Both of the organizations take a collaborative learning approach to encourage students to develop necessary study skills for academic success and increase student retention. ASC offers various student development programs; however, our focus for this proposal will be on drop-in tutoring services offered by ASC.
Sure, we all have that one parent that claims they know how to edit your paper, but oops they forget to spill the beans of how they could barely get above a B on papers themselves. The truth of the matter is writing is tough, and it does not come easy for everyone. For me, I struggle with grammar and just all the logistics that go into paper writing. However, there is a very big and bright light at the end of the tunnel for me. Yes, I will have to take more writing classes at Liberty University, but this time I will actually be able to get legitimate help. Thanks to Liberty University’s Undergraduate Writing Center, I will finally be able to get that writing help that I will need on my papers I will have to write. The writing center offers students the ability to sit down with a coach that will help them through what they are trying to accomplish on paper. Some of these coaching sessions can be in larger groups or can be requested to be one on one. Lessons on how to properly format MLA or APA will also be available at the writing center. For a student like me that does not exactly like writing, these resources will come in very handy. I truly believe that if I need help on a certain paper, then I will go there to make sure I get it. It is something that will give many students an edge over the tough papers that they will have to write as they make their way through

I believe that my experience tutoring for the UO’s English department and my time spent tutoring at the Jaqua Center, makes me a valid candidate for the job and will allow me to help you this coming year.
As part of students IEP resource program and RtI services, I provide instruction for the development of written expression, as evidenced by my Professional Growth Experience #2. My methodology for writing instruction has evolved dramatically. Now I see each student as an individual somewhere on the path to independent “author.” I work to meet each student’s learning need at their level. Currently, students work at their own level and I provide individual or small group mini-lessons to support weaker skills. I learned from experience to create quality, high interest prompts that address a real audience to teach “voice.” My format support Common Core’s informative/explanatory writing standard and engages critical thinking and motivation. Students are instructed on how to develop and organize their writing by developing a plan or out line to follow. Teachers should discuss with their students how to effectively plan out their writing strategy. Students need to be taught to question themselves about the purpose of their writing. Questions like; “Who am I writing for?” or “How will I organize my thoughts?” are two general examples. Gersten mentions the importance and purpose of the first draft and how it provides a concrete reminder for where the writing is going. The plan and its draft provide a common language for teacher and students to share making communication easier. He also speaks of the strengths of the revision process. Gersten illustrates how peer-editing can be a useful tool to employ during writing.
Within English 219, we have already learned a vital set of writing skills, that will allow for the improvement of essays, and summaries that must be written for future assessments. Some of these skills that would be relevant for achieving general writing improvement could be ideas such as thesis development, structuring and planning, or more specific examples when actually fleshing out the essay such as elements of grammar and style. Thesis development which is crucial so that ideas can be fully explained and related back to a point which can be interpreted as an overarching theme for the entire paper, and allows the reader to interpret the topic of not only the essay but of each paragraph. The writing center at Union Institute & University exists to help writers here at Union. We work in tandem with faculty to help students improve their craft of writing. Writing center tutors can guide students, helping them become confident, powerful writers. But for us to help them, students must be curious; they have to believe they can improve, and they have to be willing to work toward that end. As instructors, we must ask ourselves what we can do to facilitate these characteristics in students.
A test of success is when the odds are stacked against you. Inner-city high schools face this problem on a daily basis. When it comes to the formation of writing centers, high schools, especially ones located in America’s largest metropolitan areas, face a plethora of problems. However, by using unique tools and relationships—collaboration between high schools and local universities, choosing the proper tutors, and a unique writing center setting—inner-city high schools across the nation have been able to develop successful writing centers.
Working a full-time job, raising children, and attending college are not an easy task as many people could think. Parents always have difficulties in managing and prioritizing their time. I had to sacrifice my social life as well as my family this semester because I needed to focus on my English 1100 class. MacCaughey, who is my English 1100 instructor, has helped me grow as a writer because of the way he taught us on how to be a good writer. My confidence as a writer had always been low and I never had a clear direction in writing. Through this class, I was able to learn how to develop my ideas into writing process. Ascending the banisters of my writing process, I greatly learned about the narrative style of writing, the formal way to critical analyze a text, and write a response about it. The written coaching fails to establish a true timeline of events. There are two different incidence that were addressed in this write-up. One states I failed to communicate with the pending applicant which caused the unit to lose out on a candidate; the other case stated that I processed the applicant into the system with an incomplete background check. There was no true timeline established which showed that Iwas at fault for the delay. It was a delay in processing the applicant into the system with reasoning, which was due to not being able to reach the applicant.
Life is a cycle of learning and the dissemination of what we’ve learned. In each day of our lives we learn something new to add to our list of skills and knowledge. When I first entered university, I thought the writing courses were useless and just a waste of time since we all can write. Later, however, I realized how those courses are beneficial in improving our critical thinking and communication skills not only the style of writing.
It is the rare individual who has the exact same style and set of behaviors at work as at home. There are many legitimate reasons for this. When asked why they have different behaviors and actions, people typically respond that work has a completely different environment and calls for adaptations to that environment. There is a supervisor to whom they report, creating a somewhat subservient role. There are also the daily pressures, stressors, deadlines, lack of autonomy and other situations involving low power over which one has very little control.
