Black Bears
Ursus americanus Evolution:
• Black Bears o Kingdom: Animalia o Phylum: Chordata o Class: Mammalia o Oder: Carnivora o Family: Ursidae o Genus: Ursus o Species: americanus
• Sister Species: The American Black Bear is a sister species to Ursus maritimus (Polar bear) and Ursus arctos (Brown bear).
Ecology:
• Lifespan: Black bears can live up to 30 years in the wild but most only live around 10 years because of circumstances involving humans. Over 90% of young bear deaths are the results of gunshots, traps, vehicles and various other human interactions.
• Body Size: Males are typically 30 to 40 percent larger than the female bears. Males weigh an average of 250 pounds with females weighing around 150 pounds. Adult bears are
“Kodiak bears are a unique subspecies of the brown bear, living exclusively on the islands in the Kodiak Archipelago and have been isolated from other bears for about 12,000 years.” (Daele 2010)
As members of the mammal family, the giant panda and the polar bear share many of the same physical characteristics. On the other hand their appearances set them apart from one another in many ways. To start with pandas and polar bears are well alike and different in many ways. When being born pandas are about 15-17 centimeters long. Polar bears on the other hand though are born about 30-35 centimeters long. Pandas over the time grow and are white with big black spots around their body.
The bear have evolved along time ago and now there is only eight species existing. They evolved from early canids during the late Oligocene and early Miocene, about 25 million years ago. The earliest ancestors where the Dormaalocyon Latouri. An intermediate ancestor was the short faced bear, very similar to the modern day bear. It lived through the pleistocene period. It grew to thirteen feet long and was a herbivore. The ancestors to the modern day bears lived in the same climate and ate the same things. The modern bear contrast from the ancestor because the ancestor was more skinny and was smaller, and it was more cat like. The eight species of bear that still exist. They are the Polar bear, Brown bear, American black bear, Asian
Today, Louisiana has made extraordinary rescues with species that were once considered threatened or endangered. Due to safe planning and the Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service projected to remove the Louisiana Black Bear from the list of threatened species. In May 2015, approximately 350 black bears to 600 black bears existed in Northern Louisiana in which $900,000 was invested to restore its population. Severe habitat loss of the black bear is what initially led to the decline in the population. In 1992, the Louisiana Black Bear was placed on the list of endangered and threatened species and in May 2015, they were officially removed (Wildlife Division - Texas Parks and Wildlife Department,
Outside the british Columbia only about one in a million black bears are white. One of these bears,a subadult male lived near Orr, minnesota in 1996.Hair samples showed him to be genetically different from white Kermode bears.
Prior to the late 1900s they roamed throughout Florida, over 53,000 square miles of land. From the Panhandle to the Keys, to the southern edges of our neighboring states. At that time an estimated twelve to twenty thousand black bears roamed throughout Florida.
The white phased black bear was said to have traversed barriers of the sea during the last ice age when glaciers covered most of northwest British Columbia. When temperatures started to rise, and glaciers started to retreat it is believed that the white bear was then isolated on the islands off the coast of BC. The white coats would suggest an adaptation to the white snow for hunting, however if that was the case, the evolutionary trail should have left the recessive gene behind when it was no longer useful to them in the temperate forests. Most research that is done on the Spirit bear is to try and understand the polymorphism of this species and how it has come to last among a low frequency in a minute area. Evidence now suggest that the reason for the white fur is actually a very important adaptation for the bear and is still very useful even in the array of
Bear hunting is an extremely dangerous activity for one to partake in. There are many precautions one must take in order to successfully kill a bear. Although bears are typically calm creatures they can become extremely aggressive and dangerous if threatened. Therefore, one must be aware of their surroundings at all times and ready for any encounter. Normally bears are baited using some kind of container cut open with fruit and other strong smelling foods to draw the bears in. Though dangerous bear hunting does also provide a considerable amount of food for a family. Those you hunt typically do so in order to obtain the meat from the animal. A typical black bear weighs about 240 pounds on average. Though not all of that weight is eatable much of it
The nose of the Louisiana black bear is longer, narrower and flatter than its relative, the American Black Bear. The Louisiana black bear also has large molar teeth. The Louisiana black bear is one of sixteen subspecies of the American black bear. It is also the state mammal of Louisiana. It was chosen due to its significance in the state wildlife. It is truly a magnificent creature. Male Louisiana black bears weigh between two hundred fifty and four hundred pounds. They also grow up to six feet in length. Females are much smaller. The bears live mainly off of berries and acorns and are not predators but will defend themselves in the presence of
In 2000 there was a black bear mom with 2 white bear cubs in Beause Manitoba. Also in 1997 a subadult white bear named Halo caused such a media stir that that the lesulater for Minnesota gave protection to all white bears. Unlucky for the lesulater because Halo is the only one since.

There are two subspecies of black bears in the South Western area of the state of Texas, which are the Mexican Black Bear, ursus americanus eremicus, and the New Mexican Black Bear, ursus americanus amblyceps, both species have been seen in the area
Nearly 100 black, white bears exist on this big and beautiful world. This type of bears are nearly extinct, Because people try to hunt the extinct animals. Black white bears have a rare double recessive gene in it’s body. This is how people have the white and black fur. When 2 parents have the same recessive gene the result is white fur for their young. A lot people think that these bears are Polar Bears or even Albino’s, but they are just Kermode Bears.
The polar bear, the largest land carnivore in North America, one of the largest animals in the world and a favorite at zoos worldwide, has, over the years, adapted to its harsh Arctic environment. The appropriately named ‘ursus maritimum’ or sea bear usually lives between 15 and 18 years in the wild and spends most of its life on ice. It is the most recent of the eight bear species. The first polar bear was a brown bear subspecies, with brown bear dimensions and brown bear teeth. The polar bear evolution was rapid due to the small population and extreme pressure to survive. Even today, the polar bear continues to evolve to better adapt to the harsh realities of Arctic life.
Bear is a true carnivore, but if not prevented the black bear could be a huge problem to humans.
