Better Essays

In society we experience a lot of problems that could have devastating effect on our planet and our society. These problems can range anywhere from pollution, to dictatorships, to even over population; if these problems are not controlled they could end up to the destruction of the world or possibly even a dystopian society. We as a society take these real world possibilities into consideration and look for the outcome in the form of literature. We imagine all the possibilities of an extraordinary event or catastrophe happening that if, or when, the time comes the people of our planet will be prepared. Although we try to be prepared by imagining all situations that could possibly happen, literature cannot explain how to fix the problem but …show more content…

This can pose a problem for any society. This all resorts to over population as it said earlier “… parents broke Population Law 3903.” This means that laws were set in place to control a problem that could lead to the overthrow of a government. Is this why over population is a fear among people? Or is it used as a cover up for something bigger? Well there are two categories of people, those who believe over population is a problem and those who don’t. Either way a person may go ultimately over population laws will end up with some form of resistance against the oppressor in this case that would be the government. In Luke and Jen’s situation they decided to gather the shadow children from around their area and run a rally at the white house. Of course this was a bad idea. Now this leads to a whole other problem that can lead to a dystopian society which happens to be identity issues. Now that Luke is living under a false name he no longer feels like himself; yes he has been accepted into society but not for who he is. Luke is just filling in the space that Lee left when he passed away. Luke now has to deal with his new identity. This is observable in the story Among the Imposters. “Sometimes he whispered his real name in the dark, in the middle of the night.” “Luke. My name is Luke.” (Page.1) he tries to hold on to who he is as a person and this could destroy anyone inside mentally. And if there is enough people who deal with this type of problem it could lead to the formation of a dystopia. The story is also showing that if you try to escape reality you will be brought back in eventually. “He’d thought that coming out of hiding would expose him to the world, teach him everything. But being at Hendricks seemed just like another way to hide.” (Page. 79) Luke’s efforts were useless when he tried to show himself because he was now known as Lee Grant. These types of identity problems can cause lots of problems for kids in the novel or in our reality, if they don’t know how to be themselves then they will always try to be like somebody
