Overtime- College Calculus College is expensive. I think it is important to look at the various options that are available to high school graduates before immediately deciding to attend a college or university. For some students, it may be more economically advantageous to attend a junior college or a trade school. However, for the students who aspire to do something that involves a graduate degree, undergraduate work is a necessity. Personally, I know that attending college is something I want to do, and I am excited to have that opportunity. While I know I will not qualify for any federal financial aid, I know that I am talented and well-rounded enough to be awarded a variety of scholarships. My goal, though a little far-fetched,
When it comes to the topic of attaining a college degree, most will readily agree that it is essential to securing a successful career post-graduation. Whereas some are convinced that a college degree does not guarantee entry into a career in one 's field of study nor does it determine success in one 's career, others maintain that a higher education is, in fact, the way to job security and financial success. What comes into question is whether the investment in a college education is truly worth it or not in order to accomplish a student 's goals of success. I think it could be said for most prospective college students that the reason for going to college is to gain the credentials required for most jobs today. What many of those potential students may not realize is the substantial percentage of graduates who do not acquire a job related to their majors, how much debt they will incur, and just how many students don 't graduate at all for reasons such as an overwhelming workload and a poor work/ life balance.
Going directly to college after high school can be completely beneficial to one’s life. It is what the government encourages while in high school and can easily be accomplished. By attending college at a young age you can live the infamous college life that so many adults speak of as “the best four years of my life”. These four years can be achieved and should be enjoyed. As a young student, one can have the stamina to attend class with hours on end. As a current college student, I see many adults coming back to college because they have been part of the group that has tried to succeed while only having a high school diploma. The truth of the matter is those high school students that realize that a four-year degree in college can secure a place in life that is acceptable for them will be the ones to succeed; furthermore, these students are the future of America.
economist and he stated, “We have too few college graduates,” and “We also have too few people who are prepared for college.” (Leonhardt). Many students begin the journey of college right after high school but there are many things that colleges don’t advertise to incoming students. The first is that college is an investment, not only with your money but with your time. You need to be able to devote these next four years to studying and working towards your degree which is hard to do when you are 18-21 years old because you feel invincible, and that you are in the prime of your life. That four year commitment is one of the main reasons employers look for a Bachelor’s degree because it shows your ability to follow through and persevere. The amount of work needed to earn a Bachelor’s will differ with the major that you choose, and what college you are attending, however, the sacrifice is still the same. The second thing that colleges and universities forget to mention is that it will not be easy. Again, this will be different for each major and each college but the amount of work you put in is what you will get out of college. Lastly, there is one major aspect of college that is talked about by high school teachers to their students but it isn’t advertised by the colleges. You must learn how to self-study. In high school,6 you think you have done quite a bit of self-studying and maybe you even felt like you taught yourself that whole class. It will be very different in college and there will be no one telling you what to work on in class and when the paper is

According to the article “Even for Cashiers College Pays Off” by David Leonhardt he states, “ Education helps people do higher- skilled work, get jobs with better-paying companies or open their own businesses.” Many workers alike benefit from having a high-school diploma and a college degree. People acquire many valuable skills while in college. Either way, the skills that colleges teach, related to discipline and persistence, may be more valuable than academics. My motivation to keep going to and go to college has always been my own expectations of being able to to reach the highest point of success in doing what i want in
Is going to college really worth the cost ? Attending college should be about getting a higher education and figuring out what career students would pursue that they would enjoy after graduating. College should help students grow in a positive direction. Yet instead students go to college because that is expected of them after high school. Not knowing the difficulties they would have to face. Most students do not know what they truly want to do with their life. Which can be a very bad venture, especially since college is so expensive. Although opponents claim that college is a good investment, it honestly is not worth the cost because it does not guarantee employment, it burdens students with student loans, and it does not prepare students for the workforce after graduation.
There are many choices and paths to choose when the time comes to attend college however, a question to ask is, is it worth it? If decided to attend college, the following decision to be made revolves around an area of study one would like to pursue and the topic of study that will be available for them. Though many can further their education in different ways, a couple of ways consist of attending a four year college (private/ public) or a community college. Not going to college at all is the other alternative, but is it really a smart idea? Most adults have continuously told young students all through high school to attend college. A student’s chance of economic success in the future can be risen due to a college education. Judith Scott-Clayton, who is an assistant professor of economics and education at Teachers College at Columbia University states, “Individuals with bachelor’s degrees earn about 60 percent more than those with just a high school diploma, who in turn earn about 40 percent more than high school dropouts.” Students who seek higher education, are more likely to experience a better future and a better life. The cost of going to college may seem overwhelming at times however, the experiences and education obtained throughout college is priceless in regards to the way one interacts with others on a global basis, has a stronger job stability, and has better employment benefits.
This question and many others have been poised time and time again. Why do I need to go to college? My parents didn’t go and their life turned out fine. My friends never, have time for relax and have fun why would I put myself through that. Bill Gates, didn’t finish college look at him now. In the article "The Future is About More Than College", by Joshua Starr only 3% of Americans think a high school degree is sufficient to tackle today's work force (58). Although college is not a mandatory choice, it will dictate almost every choice you make in your life there on after.

In recent discussions of Is College Worth It? By John Green, a controversial issue has been whether, people should attend college or get a job after they finish high school. On the one hand, some argue that people can get a monthly income better than if they have a degree. From this perspective, some people they do not want to attend college. On the other hand, however, others insist that people should attend college after they finish high school. In the words of John Green, one of this view’s proponents, “after graduating from college, I actually made $1 per hour less when I started working as an assistant at Booklist Magazine, but the job was better in every way” (video). According to this view, he was working at Stake and Shake and he was getting better salary than what he got after graduate by 1$ less but money is not everything in life. Then he proved to the audiences through his experience that he was more comfortable with working as assistant at Booklist Magazine even he is making less money. Because he got a better job, got the knowledge, and work on something that he like. In sum, then, the issue is whether to attend college or work without a degree. My own view is that attending college is worth it even if it will cost some sacrifices of things that we can get it in the future. After, all, I have chosen to identify as a college student at Winona State University. Though I concede that choosing the university and working to enroll and pay the
Is a college education worth it? While it is important to get a college education, there are many people who cannot afford to go to college. Going to college leaves adults in millions of dollars in debt for many years. This results in adults working most their life to just pay off their education. However, starting work right out of high school instead of going to a 4-year college has been more appealing to some people. Going to a trade school is less expensive and less time consuming. However, not all non-college jobs can support a family. To help ensure these skilled workers can make it, the work force needs to guarantee that non-college jobs pay well and offer good benefits. This requires strong labor standards, a tangible ability to
One of the biggest questions a high-school student will be asked is about their future career. What most students pursing a college degree fail to realize is the opportunity cost they might have to sacrifice. It all comes down to the individual because unless the person is a professional basketball player, then college might not be worth the opportunity cost for that said individual. Unfortunately, not everyone is a professional athlete so their opportunity cost for college might not be so easy to determine. Also the student must take into consideration what degree they want to pursue and see how the job market is like. For instance, an art degree may not be the best choice to go with in today’s economy. The CNBC article that brought an interest to this topic is “What’s the
The majority of students want to go to college. Some have the privilege to go to college while it's a dream for others because they can’t afford it. College is a way too expensive nowadays and the price for it keeps going up. Since I currently have no job and only one of my parents work I will not be able to pay for college. I want to be able to go to college and study something in the business related field to help our economy grow and prosper. Having an additional education after high school is very
Why should you go to college? Well would you rather suffer a couple years and eventually lead to success or, take your chances and skip those years and have a little chance of success? Now, college doesn’t give you a 100% of success or a job, infact in the article “Why College Isn’t for Everyone”, states that “ a goodly proportion (more than 40 percent) of those attending four-year colleges full-time fail to graduate, even within six years.” ( “Why College Isn’t for Everyone” 78). Also, in the article “New School Year, Old Story: Education Pays” it says “Students who take out loans to pay for school should consider the amount they will be obligated to repay.” (“New School Year, Old
Higher education, college, has always been seen as a no brainer for most of us. Is that because we grew up in a place of privilege and assume college is something we deserve? Or is it because we love to learn and a university is one of the best places to do such a thing? If the answer is the latter, then college is the right choice; that is, if there is a way to pay for it. If the former fits better, then it’s time to rethink what attending a university means and take a look at the alternatives. In today’s economy, college isn’t for everybody.
