Throughout the essay, Charles Murray stresses the idea that college is the wonderland of finding oneself and to find the career that one would want to follow for the rest of their lives. “College is seen as the open sesame to a good job and a desirable way for adolescents to transition to adulthood. Neither reason is as persuasive as it first appears.” Murray, C (2008) Practically spoken, this is not normally the case. College is a fair amount of work, much more work than one would normally acquire through any course of a high school or secondary school setting. In no way saying that the average student cannot meet the requirement and achieve success over the amounted work, it would also be ridiculous to expect every graduate to pursue going into higher education with the expansion of work that will be given.

More people than ever before are attending college due to the endless opportunities that it provides. Louis Menand, a college professor and the author of “Live and Learn: Why We Have College,” explains the meaning of college through three theories that have been developed. Theory 1 supports the idea of the sorting-out process that separates the highly intelligent from the less intelligent. Menand’s second theory explains that college provides opportunities for developmental growth, personal growth, and teaches individuals about the world around us. Located in the 14th Edition of The Norton Reader, an article written by Carolina Bird titled “College is a Waste of Time and Money” can be found. In the article Bird argues that though college may be beneficial for a small percentage of students, but for the majority it is a waste of time and money. The benefits of a college degree can rely on many contributing factors, but for some college is simply a waste of time and money. Though most of the sources used in Bird's article are over four decades old, the argument today is still very strong. One example includes the idea that most students believe that college is the best thing for them to do for their future, and therefore they enroll, only to realize they are not happy and drop out. For other students their dream may have always been set on a specific career, putting college into the plan, but following graduation the job market for their degree is scarce. Within these two examples one would find support for the argument that college is a waste of time and money.

People go to college for many different reasons, some go to prepare themselves for a job there seeking. Others because they’re doing what their parents are telling them, or their going to just explore their options. I think at some point and time though, everyone going to college has at least wondered whether going to college is worth it or not. We worry whether we’ll find a job, or if we’re going to have severe financial problems in the future due to debt. This question is important to me, because I’m one of the many that don’t really know what I want to do with my life. College is an organized group of professional people with particular aims, duties, and privileges. Many people don’t attend college because they think they’ll be just fine with a high school diploma. The truth is you will always be much more qualified with a college diploma. Nowadays, most jobs require people who are well educated and have great job skills. Therefore, the people who want a good job have to study hard and at least graduate with a high education. Furthermore, as technology advances all over the world, more and more education is required from people. Most jobs overlook people with only high school diplomas, for example if they had to choose between two people one with a college degree and one without, the person with the degree would get the job. First, people say that getting a job is the first obstacle in life. The second obstacle is getting married and third is how to take care of your child or children. In order to pass the first obstacle, which getting a good job is the most important. The result of this first obstacle can impact the second and third obstacles. This expresses how important it is to get a job. College expresses how well organized you are and also how smart and what habits you have. Also, this means that the applicant has the potential to work hard and keep the work that the applicant is suppose to do.

Many people aspire to receive a college degree, including myself, but not because they want to but because it is the societal norm. Throughout years of schooling adults preach to students that a college degree is essential, and because of this students go to college because they have to. This was the epitome of myself since I was in middle school, but recently I have realized that receiving a college degree is much more than a piece of paper indicating a completed program. Many students face internal battles during their college careers; sleepless nights, studying for exams, constant social issues, and the fear of not having a definitive career path. This all leads to the questions “why am I here”? “What is the true purpose of college?” Many writers have described these struggles in great detail. They feel the reward for overcoming these struggles is intellectual growth. People go to college for many reasons. I remember being at Ohio state University and one one my classmate was 75 years old. We live in a market economy where the opportunity of having a college degree offers a lot . We all dream of becoming someone else after graduation. As a result, we respond to the incentives of what life will offer us with the diploma. There are many opportunity cost of attending college. Many people finish their high school and have a choice to go to college or go open a business and become an entrepreneur. They choose to get a loan and open a business, make money early and be better off. Some positive information my cousin told me really got me motivated for college. She explained to me that there’s a lot of freedom & you basically make you’re own choices. Many people believe that if you go to college it will guarantee you a respectable career and a higher-income. One would think that is what students expect to get out of their college experience but that may not always be the case. I am an example of a student who is looking for a different outcome for my college degree and experience. As an adult making the decision to go to college was a constant battle I struggled with. I knew I was taking a big risk when I signed up for classes. I knew college would be an adventure that would be both tough yet rewarding. I want my college experience to give me the push that I need to help me grow as an individual.
