Conceptual analysis is integral in understanding nursing theory. According to Walker and Avant (1995), concept analysis allows nursing scholars to examine the attributes or characteristics of a concept. It can be used to evaluate a nursing theory and allows for examination of concepts for relevance and fit within the theory. The phenomena of pain will be discussed in this paper and how it relates to the comfort theory.

What is pain? The word pain consists of many definitions. It can be both mental and physical. Losing a loved one can result in mental pain, while physical pain is usually caused by external and internal injuries. Pain differs depending on the source. There are some that even argue that pain is just a fabric of our imagination.

Experts that teach or study forgiveness have made it clear that when you forgive someone, one does not fret over or deny the seriousness of an offense against you or your person. Choosing to forgive takes a weight off your back and lets you move on with your life. Choosing not to forgive can leave you stuck and is very unhealthy. Though you should forgive, you should never forget. Though forgiveness can be a factor in fixing a damaged relationship, it does not obligate you to make up with the person or people who had harmed you. Some of the things that can get in the way of forgiveness are pride, pain, and anger. If you have been severely hurt by someone it makes it extremely hard to forgive them. When your encompassed by anger it is also hard to forgive with all the anger directed at the person. The most important thing is to learn how to forgive yourself. If you can not forgive yourself you can not ever move on. People make mistake and people do things they shouldn't have done, but that is life. If you make a mistake and can not forgive yourself you will be unable to move on in

Being in pain isn't fair to the individual who is having the pain. It is complex involvement that's altogether tuned by your brain. The outcomes are frequently interesting and counter-intuitive, like quantum material science. But, like science is evident, so is each agonizing sensation is made from the brain and there is no torment without brain. The sense organs are comprised of what the body can do. It also, includes a person's muscle control, how a person can take air in and if the individual can feel hot or cold objects. When a person is harmed, the natural response would be that of torment. Pain is basically an emotional experience within an individual that is linked to the body tissue damage. The main purpose of the pain is mainly to alert the body to react preventing severe damage to the tissues. All this comes because of nerve fibers sending a signal to the brain for interpretations. The basic understanding of pain is slightly diverted by Moseley’s argument. Moseley argues that pain is created by the brain as a way of protecting individuals. He further claims that if the brain notices some danger in any manner, it creates pain with an aim of protecting an individual's tissues from being damaged past a certain level. Furthermore, there can be no threats in certain situations, but the brain will still create some little pains.

Jacob Bronowski once said, “The wish to hurt, the momentary intoxication with pain, is the loophole through, which the pervert climbs into the minds of ordinary men” (qtd. in “Bronowski.”). He elaborates that wanting someone to feel agony is immoral. Society frowns upon obliterating another person’s reputation for self-benefit. Most people characterize hurt as physical soreness, but to completely understand how the word has evolved it helps to look at the etymology and the diverse definitions that exist in economics, sports, and psychology.

Pain is something that connects all of us. From birth to death we can identify with each other the idea and arguably the perception of it. We all know we experience it, but what is more important is how we all perceive it. It is known that there are people out there with a ‘high’ pain tolerance and there are also ones out there with a ‘low’ pain tolerance, but what is different between them? The most common reason that people seek medical care is pain, and pain is the leading cause of disability (Peterson & Bredow, 2013, p. 51; National Institute of Health, 2010). Pain is such an important topic in healthcare that the United States congress “identified 2000 to 2010 as the Decade of Pain Control and Research” (Brunner L. S., et al., 2010, p. 231). Unfortunatelly, patients are reporting a small increase in satisfaction with the pain management while in the hospital (Bernhofer, 2011). Pain assessment and treatment can be complex since nurses do not have a tool to quantify it. Pain is considered the fifth vital sign, however, we do not have numbers to guide our interventions. Pain is a subjective expirience that cannot be shared easily. Since nurses spend more time with patients in pain than any other healthcare provider, nurses must have a clear understanding of the concept of pain (Brunner, et al., 2010). Concept analysis’ main objective is to clarify ideas, to enhance critical thinking, and to promote communication (Rodgers & Knafl, 2000). This paper will examine the concept of pain using Wilson’s Steps of Concept Analysis (Rodgers & Knafl, 2000).
