The sample consisted of women who were rejected in an initial request for abortion and an appeal to that decision. They state, “fortuitous circumstances made it possible to gain access to the 1961-63 records of the Prague Appellate Abortion Commission” (David 2006). Prague was able to access records regarding women who met these criterion. After not including women who were not residents of Prague anymore, were untraceable, provided a false address, not still residing in Prauge or not actually being pregnant, they were left with 316 women who gave birth to 317 live children. People were not included if they died, were adopted, moved, placed into institutional care, lived with relatives, denied or unsuccessfully pair-matched. They state, “although the subjects born from unwanted pregnancies still manifested less favourable psychosocial adaptation at age 30 than the pair-matched controls, the differences had narrowed” (David 2006). The subjects of unwanted pregnancies had less favorable psychological adaptation, but the gap had narrowed since earlier waves. They also state, “more unwanted pregnancy women than control women were registered as unmarried or frequently divorced, or having difficulties in parenting or being unemployed” (David 2006). When comparing the women who were controls and unwanted pregnancy women, the unwanted pregnancy women had more divorces and were more often unmarried than the controls. Wave five looked at psychiatric treatment in adulthood. They state, “being born from an unwanted pregnancy was significantly related to psychiatric treatment in adulthood” (David 2006).
