The paleo diet is a weight loss diet that has harmful implications for young individuals. It is imperative that the positive stigma surrounding the new diet is removed and people are aware of the harmful side effects of the diet before its spreads into a global phenomenon. The concept of the paleo diet is extremely flawed because most people during the Palaeolithic era had an average lifespan of 30 years whereas the average lifespan of a human now in Australia is 82.1 years hence proving that the current diet is much healthier than that of Palaeolithic ancestors.
The paleo diet involves 55% of ones total calories resulting from protein, 15% from fruits and vegetables as well as nuts and seeds and 20% from fats. The diet prohibits the consumption of dairy, grains, legumes, starchy vegetables, salt, sugar and unsaturated fats. This can result in an array of short term and long term health effects in young individuals which I elaborate on below.

People on the paleo diet are known to have low levels of calcium, magnesium, folic acid and iron. The lack of calcium not only stunts growth but it also leads to chronic osteoporosis which is a debilitating disease that limits and sometimes prevents people from partaking in most exercises. Folic acid deficiency can lead to anaemia, lack of oxygen going to blood, which makes you feel fatigued and tired. Moreover, an increased consumption of meat can lead to an increased change of receiving bowel cancer. Additionally, most young people’s brains are still developing and carbohydrates (in the form of glucose) play an imperative role for the growth of the brain and most young individuals are still at school or an educational institution. Consequently, the paleo diet can have negative effects for young individuals
