In the book Paper Towns by John Green, the story takes place in Orlando, Florida. The author describes the setting as a suburban neighborhood in that is located in Jefferson Park in the beginning. Then the setting develops towards the outskirts of Orlando as Quentin Jacobsen begins his search for Margo. In the search for Margo, his clues lead him to a mini-mall that was abandoned in Christmas, Florida. However, as the journey continues Quentin he searches for Margo in areas called “pseudo divisions” which were abandoned subdivision projects in the outer part of Orlando. Finally, on the day of his graduation, he discovers that Margo is hidden in a city called Agloe located in New York.

Timothy Cole was a 24-year-old student at Texas Tech University. After completing two years of college, he had enlisted in the army for two years in hopes of serving his country. Timothy was an ordinary man with dreams of getting married and having children, but that dream never materialized. Upon his return to Texas Tech in 1985, he was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison for the rape of a 20-year-old girl named Michele Mallin. Mallin, then, a student at Texas Tech University Lubbock, was walking to her car when a man approached her and held a knife to her neck. He forced himself into her car and drove her to the outskirts of town where he raped her repeatedly. The next day the police investigator showed Michele pictures of the suspect where she pointed at Timothy Cole. When police showed her a lineup, again she picked Cole. “I was positive,” she said. “I really thought it was him,” but in fact she had accidently robbed an innocent man of his freedom (Lavendra 2009).

Quentin, who is convinced he is in love with the wild and adventurous Margo, goes on a journey to find her when she ran away. Through this journey, he finds a new Margo, the real Margo. Instead of imagining the Margo of his dreams, who is perfect and daring, he sees a different side, like looking through a fun house mirror. Using the theme of perceptions vs. reality, John Green shows readers through Quentin that you have to dig deeper in order to know and understand someone.

In a society where young adults are consumed by superficial appearances, the desire to understand others and conceptualize life is neglected. In the novel, Paper Towns, John Green challenges young adults to consider different perspectives through relatable characters and their experiences. At the beginning of the novel, Margo and Quentin do not recognize each other’s existence. Then, one night, Margo enters Q’s room through the window, and they go on an epic adventure of revenge. The next morning, Margo is gone.

In a world for teenagers, there is high school. Attending these high schools are millions of students who are all so diverse. In the U.S. today, the adolescents are more isolated from adults and children outside of their age group than ever before. Age segregation has created a youth that is different from adult culture in its values and attitudes. Society is constantly changing from generation to generation causing teenagers to rely on one another to teach them things that adults cannot. The theme of this book is a reunion. Meaning that the main character, Quentin, goes on a journey to reunite with Margo, who he has known his entire life. To accomplish this, he first has to figure out where she went and then he has to come up with a strategy to reunite with her.

Nine years later, Quentin and Margo grow apart and never talk. But suddenly, one night Margo shows up at his house to ask Quentin to help her with eleven missions to get revenge on the people who have hurt her in her high school years. She needed Quentin’s car and him to drive. They go on their journey on a school night and seek revenge on many people. Margo takes Quentin to an adventure filled with fish, vandalizing, spray-paint, and breaking into SeaWorld. After her eleven things are completed, Quentin is glad that he is back to being friends with Margo.

While they go about causing mayhem Quinten had started to loosen up a bit from his usual shyness. After the acts and pranks that they pulled Margo took him up in a big office building and told him about paper towns and how she was a paper girl. the next day Margo had run off to this paper town in New York and left him clues to where she is. After a long ride with his friends Ben, Radar, and Lacey he meets Margo in Algo a paper town. Quentin leaves Algo without Margo. Margo ran a way to find herself in Algo, but Quinten heads back for prom. The main character of Paper towns is Quentin Jacobsen. He is 18 years old, lives in Orlando, Florida, and is a senior about to graduate high school. He is a regular person in the beginning of the book with fears and isn't special in any way and he lives a very normal life, except for that he is madly obsessed about his lifetime neighbor, his childhood friend, and his lifelong crush, Margo Roth Spiegelman. Margo unlike Quentin, lives a very not normal life and her personality is the complete opposite of Quentin’s. Margo is brave, curious, confident, and is downright awesome. These attributes make Quentin feel like Margo is amazing and make him want to be with her. Nine years ago at the age of nine, Quentin and Margo find a dead body in Jefferson park, Quentin is scared of it and backs away while Margo on the other hand is curious and approaches it. Margo says that she can see that all the strings inside of the dead guy are broken. Then Quentin grabs her and they run home away from it. This shows that Quentin is a person that is easily scared and afraid of things, but he also really cares about the people he love. Then nine years later, Quentin Jacobsen is an average, unpopular student that is still afraid of things, while Margo Roth Spiegelman is one of the most popular girls in the whole school and is still courageous and brave.
