“Never interrupt someone doing something you said couldn’t be done.” - Amelia Earhart. Ms. Earhart was an aviator during the 1920’s and 1930’s. Amelia was an amazing pilot. Amelia had many achievements and made a mark in history.
The American aviator, Amelia Earhart, remains the world’s best known pilot, even long after her mysterious disappearance during a round-the-world flight in 1937. Amelia was born on July 24, 1897 in Atchison Kansas (2”Amelia”). Her mother, Amy Otis Earhart, married a man named Edwin, who was an alcoholic. He was always searching for a job because he wanted to establish a good financial foundation for the family. She never gave up on learning how to fly an airplane. She was also an independent child. She never relied on her family for anything. Also, she was a brave woman. She went on a flight, all by herself across the equator. On January 3, 1921, Amelia started her flying lessons with Neta Snook. Six months later in July, she brought her own plane. The plane was a Kinner Airster, she named it “The Canary”. She broke the women’s altitude record in October 22, 1922. She rose to 14,000 feet. In the Fall of 1928, she published a book called “20 Hours 40 Minutes”. She also toured and lectured; she became an aviation editor “Cosmopolitan magazine”. Also, “Cosmopolitan Magazine” was first published in 1886. It has changed so much since then. In August 1929, Amelia placed third in the First Women’s Air Derby. It was also known as the “Powder Puff Derby” Amelia broke the women’s speed record of 62.1 miles per hour with no load, and with a load of 1102.3 pounds of weight. Amelia set a speed record of 181.18 miles per hour over a 3K course! Although, according to 1920-30.com, a guy named James Doolittle won a cup for the United States with a speed of 232.57 mph in 1925. Now for the important achievements, in August 24-25, 1932, she flown 2,447.8 miles from coast to coast for 19 hours and 5 minutes… but wait, she did that nonstop!! She was a feminist. She was the Rosie The Riveter of that time! Today, females can look up to Amelia for inspiration. Amelia was a strong, independent woman doing her own things. When she had dreams, she accomplished them. Back in the day and even today, males are “dominant”. All the guys were supposed to be playing sports and being athletes while the women were basically restricted from participating in any athletic thing. Men are stereotyped to be strong, independent, brave. Women are stereotyped to be fragile, caring, weak. The men are the knight in shining armor while the women are the princesses trapped in the tower. But Amelia was looked up to like the knight in shining armor. Amelia was one out of many to stand up and say “Hey! What men can do, women can do better.” She did the things that males did like sports and flying. Amelia is a great role model today; she wasn’t afraid to call herself a feminist. Amelia was a very strong and independent woman, which are some characteristics that men are stereotyped to have. Amelia Earhart is gone because of her tragic disappearance over the Pacific, but for sure, what she has done stills lives on till this
