Imagine waking up thirty minutes late the morning of your final exam, the sense of panic you feel as you are rushing to get dressed and then begin speeding through traffic to make it to the campus on time. Upon finally arriving, with less than fifteen minutes left to spare, there is absolutely nowhere for you to park your car in the parking garage. Stressful situations such as these happen on a daily basis for college students attending the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV), the issue of parking deficiencies at UNLV is becoming a more well-known and very prevalent among the college’s community. The absence of parking spots at UNLV is detrimental to students’ education because it causes problems such as tardiness, frustration added stress, and financial issues; all things that will eventually handicap the educational enrichment of the students that are enrolled.
Motor Vehicle thefts can be easily done by a professional who knows how to hi-jack cars. The most common mistake why some cars are easily stolen is that people leave their doors unlocked. For example most people go into convince stores and leave their car running which is an easy way for a car to be stolen. There are certain vehicles that cannot be considered as automobile theft as in farm equipment because it isn’t registered with the DMV. Since cameras are already integrated into subway and trains, it seems just to accommodate them into our newly proposed subway stations as well - adding to the already 4,500 cameras [1] in the NYC subway system. With observing crime comes deterring crime, many cities around the world implement passive deterring techniques which prove beneficial. Adding blue lights in the stations which turn on during the night has helped Japan [2], it has reduced crime significantly and eliminated suicide attempts at those stations. Providing blue lights in NYC stations, such as the new ones proposed can reduce
Rialto, California is an example of a city with positive results from the use of body-cameras. In Rialto, police began wearing body-cameras a little less than three years ago. As a result of officers wearing body-cameras, citizens’ complaints against police officers dropped 88 percent and use of force by police officers dropped 60 percent from the previous 12 month period when body-cameras were not in use. Rialto’s police chief said, “When you put a camera on a police officer, they tend to behave a little better, follow the rules a little better. And if the citizen knows the officer is wearing a camera, chances are the citizen will behave a little better” (Lovett).
I am always scared that my manager is going to look at the cameras after every shift and she would find a moment in which I was not working to my fullest potential, and would reprimand me. I also feel like surveillance systems can be used as a defense for the worker whenever they believe that or accuse a customer for shoplifting. All the worker would have to do is quickly go back and review the cameras before making their statement. If a customer feels that they are being harassed or discriminated by a worker, all the customer would have to do is make a request for the manager to review the surveillance tapes and then the customer’s claim will either be justified and taken into consideration, or it will be discarded. Cameras mounted on street signs can log cars by license plate number, scan facial characteristics, and take notes of vehicles repeatedly circling or driving above or below the speed limit. About two summers ago, my friends and I took a day-trip down to Washing D.C. I decided to drive down there since my car was the safest and out of all of the other cars, my car had the most gas in it. While we were down there, I accidentally ran a red
On Wednesday 04/28/16 at 2239 hours I was driving in my patrol vehicle around the area of Lea Hill Park located at 31600 124th Ave SE in the City of Auburn, King Co, WA, when I noticed a vehicle with two occupants inside parked on the south side of the park.
With the increasing emergence of traffic cameras around the nation, there has emerged a debate about whether the cameras are effectively functioning to keep drivers safe or whether they are just another source of revenue for cites. Facts have proven that the purpose for the traffic cameras is simply generating more money for the cities. The estimated amount of money that the city of Denver will be making in 2011 from these cameras (Kaminsky)—excluding the ones recently put up—a grand estimation total of seven million dollars… “According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety more than 550 communities in the United States use red light cameras.” (Urie) Research shows how the cameras are not improving safety for drivers, and for
On December 13, 2015, AP closed internal cash and merchandise theft case at the Bay Rockland for a value of $430. AP received a tip regarding theft of money in the locker room from associate’s personal belongings. Live surveillance showed the cleaner taking money from an associate’s jacket. The cleaner was interviewed and admitted to the theft of the associate’s money and also merchandise from the receiving
A second option would be the less intrusive option of using of video surveillance. The use of video surveillance may be helpful. However, it may fail to curtail crime if constant monitoring is required and staff cannot do this. The successful use of video surveillance must be accompanied by the prosecution of offenders and the same be publicized to ascertain that the criminals’ perception of risk is altered.
Clark and Homel (1997) mention in this study that they have classified three different forms of surveillance when it comes to the prevention of any given situational crime. In their opinion, the three different types of surveillance contain formal surveillance, natural surveillance, and surveillance by employees. Clark and Homel (1997) explain why the reason they came about with these different types of situation crime preventions is because they are comparing the effectiveness of these surveillances by examination of the outcome of what is
There are currently only a handful of reserved spaces on campus, and the ground has yet to be broken for the construction of the parking deck. In fact, Winthrop University does not even have all the funds needed to build this parking deck. When I approached Jack Allen, of Campus Police, with my idea of reserved parking spaces, he told me that he thought it was a good idea. Walter Hardin, when given the same idea, seemed to think that the reserved parking system would not realistically work out but was open to the proposal.
Employee theft is a crime that is costing U.S. companies a great deal of money. Employee thefts are growing in number, partially because the perpetrators really do not see themselves as criminals and rationalize what they are doing in much the same way as taxpayers rationalize income tax fraud. Employee theft is one of many personnel problems that is easier to prevent than to solve. Prevention should begin before an applicant becomes an employee. Some theft
