Pat Conroy: The Prince of Tides Pat Conroy is a New York Times bestselling author that has written many renowned novels and memoirs. “He's not much of a stylist, and his sense of humor needs work, but Pat Conroy has a nice wry perspective and a wholehearted commitment to his job.” (CLC 45). One of his best selling novels is The Prince of Tides. This novel depicts the life of Tom Wingo a southern boy and all the problems he faces with his family. Pat Conroy has won many awards for his writings and continues to be on summer reading lists throughout the country. The most recent award he received was in 2010, the Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Governor’s Award for the Arts, South Carolina, Lifetime Achievement.

His work gives people something to relate to whether its Tom Wingo protecting his sister Savannah, Tom’s hate for his father, or Tom’s love of his mother. Conroy’s novel was related to so well that it was made into a screen play in 1991. The Atlanta Journal states "By far, Conroy's best work." While the Pittsburgh Press states, "A literary gem…The Prince of Tides is in the best tradition of novel writing. It is an engrossing story of unforgettable characters…. Its description of rural South Carolina and the effect of that ambiance on those who live there is masterful. Pat Conroy writes from the heart." (Staggs 1) The Prince of Tides has become traditional reading to schools all over the U.S. it is on many summer reading lists because of its ability to relate to so many people. It has even been used in the justice program to give to prisoners. It has also been on the 100 best summer beach books.
