Can you imagine leading 800 people on a 1,100 mile journey? Chief Joseph was a leader of the Nez Perce, a Native American tribe. The Nez Perce were ordered to a reservation specifically for Native Americans. Chief Joseph did not like this idea and attempted to lead his tribe to Canada. During this trip, the U.S. Army was simultaneously fighting them, making the trip even harder than expected. Rather than making it to Canada, they got trapped about forty miles from Canada and after a five day fight the Nez Perce were defeated. These events ultimately led up to Chief Joseph writing this somber, grim surrender. Chief Joseph uses Pathos, Logos, and Ethos to provide emotion, logic and ethics throughout his speech. Chief Joseph successfully utilizes pathos in the sense of him making the audience feel awful for what him and tribe has had to go through. He talks about the most vulnerable people, children, saying, “The little children are freezing to death.” He knows that the children ran away from all of the adults that were older than them, or at least the ones still alive and knew that they probably would not live since it was freezing outside and there was no food or shelter. It makes the reader sympathize with Chief Joseph and share his sorrow. Chief knows that the little children are freezing and starving to death. He says, “ My heart is sick and sad”, Chief’s heart is aching for all of what he has seen and been through. This helps describe his emotions, by telling us how he
Chief Joseph’s speech predominately employs statements of pathos to convey his message. To use the appeal of pathos means to evoke the audience’s emotions. Chief Joseph begins to gain pity from the readers by saying, “The little children are freezing to death.” In their voyage, they are left with limited supplies, which explains why the children are freezing. This is a example of pathos because for most readers, it is sad to think about small children freezing to death. He draws you in, by speaking to your emotions. Chief Joseph then talks about the members of the tribe who have fled away without any any supplies. “ My people, some of them, have run away to the hills and have no blankets, no food. No one knows where they are— perhaps freezing to death.” This quote is very similar to
Pathos is used in order to link the essay with the reader’s emotions and ethos is used to show the writers moral character. For example, pathos is used when Kozol speaks to a student of a Bronx high school, “Think of it this way,” said a sixteen-year-old girl. “If people in New York woke up one day and learned that we were gone…how would they feel?...I think they’d be relieved.” (Kozol 205) This part of the essay really made me feel sad for this girl who lives in a society where she has grown up feeling like now one cares about her or others of her race.
It was important for Thomas Paine to use pathos to persuade the audience because they needed to see a connection between their lives and the war. Thomas Paine talks about how the future of their children is so valuable and they need to fight right now for the happiness they
Pathos appeals to the reader’s emotions by using emotional stories and imagery. Pathos strategies are often used to grab and hold the reader’s attention. Emotional or personal stories give the reader an opportunity to emotionally relate to the story, and allows them to be emotionally connected. An emotionally connected reader is more interested in the story that a reader who is not emotionally connected.
Chief Joesph uses pathos in the speech by using emotion and convincing the audience by using emotional response. In the first quote, “ I am tired of fighting,” he explains that all of this fighting has him tired and he only wants peace. With that being said , he says he will fight no more forever. In the second quote, “ My heart is sick and sad,” he claims how all of this killing and disappearance of his tribe has him sick to his heart. Therefore, he wants peace with all enemies and wants to fight no more. In the second quote, “ My heart is sick and sad,” he describes he is sick and sad because of the deaths of the old men in his tribe and the people who are freezing to death. Adding to that , he wants to find his people and his children. In the final quote, “ The little children are freezing to death,” he explains they have no food or blankets to survive. Having said that , this makes the audience emotional because no one can imagine an innocent , sweet child freezing to death. In conclusion , these devices make the speech
In chapter ten, Douglass uses pathos with his imagery and figurative language that provokes an emotional response. Pathos is also seen in his powerful words, phrases and mental images that stir up emotion. Frederick Douglass went from being a slave into being a free man
He also includes a lot of emotional parts throughout the speech this is effective as it may get an emotional response from the audience this happens when he says “Your loved ones were daring and brave” and “It is hard to understand, but sometimes painful things like this happen” this is a good use of pathos as it does connect to the emotional feelings of the viewer.
Pathos: Adichie’s also displays strongly her emotions as she shares multiple stories with her audience like the story of the helper who was a little boy with a very poor family and had nothing. She also utilizes humor to make her point on the essence of stereotyping by telling the story of her room-mate who felt pity for her before even seeing her, just because she was African. Since the speech is mostly a narration from her life, Adichie includes emotions as she talks so that the audience gets to feel what she feels.
On January 20th of 1961 John F Kennedy gave his famous speech titled the “Inaugural Address”, which cemented his position as commander and chief of the United States. President Kennedy’s inaugural speech detailed promises he made to the American people, and also what he hopes to accomplish in office. Throughout the speech, Kennedy utilizes many rhetorical devices such as Ethos and Pathos in order to convince his audience, which is the American people, that change will come about. Kennedy’s legacy still remains influential as it was when the speech was given, due to his persuasive comments on world peace. The legacy Kennedy created in the speech hopes to achieve peace in the world. The legacy of peace Kennedy has created is presented to the reader through the utilization of ethos and pathos in order to persuade the reader that world peace is a possibility under his administration,
The significance of the source is that it is one of the few documents that give a window upon the thoughts and belief systems of the Native Americans. Chief Joseph was the leader of the Nez Perce, a Plains Indian tribe. Several passages of the speech are heartbreaking, such as when Chief Joseph mourns the fact that he will not be able to live and die in the land where his own father, the former Chief is buried, saying that only a wild beast could not feel sorrow at his plight. The intense connection to the land felt by the Native American tribe is suggested in the wording, as is the fundamental desire not to
Pathos is used very effectively in Seth Davis’s article. By using pathos he is helping to expose the purpose of the article in a way that you wouldn’t think of before. Davis states “As the father of three children under the age of eight, I can only pray that someone “exploits” my sons someday
In Atticus’ argument he also uses pathos. One example of when he uses pathos is when he states “I have nothing but pity in my heart for the chief witness
Pathos consists in arousing the emotions of the listeners and directing those emotions in an action that should be taken. In order to use pathos in my speech, I could reference personal experiences. For example if I were having a conversation with someone who just lost a family member, I could make a connection with them by telling them about a similar loss in my
An example of pathos that was used is where it says, “And so a quiet, respectful, humble Negro who had the unmitigated temerity to ‘feel sorry’ for a white woman has had to put his word against two white peoples.” I know that this quote is pathos because Atticus is trying to explain Tom so that he seems harmless by saying that he is quiet, humble, and respectful. He also tries to get people to feel bad so they know Tom isn’t guilty. This part was better in the movie because of how they put the camera on Atticus and his facial expressions changed. It really makes you start to feel bad that Tom is going through all of the
Pathos, according to merriam-webster.com, is defined as “an element in experience or in artistic representation evoking pity or compassion”. The Rich Brother uses this appeal to grasp the heart strings of its audience; to have compassion and/or pity towards the brothers. As author Tobias Wolff states in this piece, “Do you remember when you used to try to kill me? ...Is that strange or what? I was afraid that you’d get mad if you found out that I knew you were trying to kill me” (328-329). In this quote Tobias Wolff, a short story author, makes
