Pathos In Chief Joseph's Speech

Can you imagine leading 800 people on a 1,100 mile journey? Chief Joseph was a leader of the Nez Perce, a Native American tribe. The Nez Perce were ordered to a reservation specifically for Native Americans. Chief Joseph did not like this idea and attempted to lead his tribe to Canada. During this trip, the U.S. Army was simultaneously fighting them, making the trip even harder than expected. Rather than making it to Canada, they got trapped about forty miles from Canada and after a five day fight the Nez Perce were defeated. These events ultimately led up to Chief Joseph writing this somber, grim surrender. Chief Joseph uses Pathos, Logos, and Ethos to provide emotion, logic and ethics throughout his speech. Chief Joseph successfully utilizes pathos in the sense of him making the audience feel awful for what him and tribe has had to go through. He talks about the most vulnerable people, children, saying, “The little children are freezing to death.” He knows that the children ran away from all of the adults that were older than them, or at least the ones still alive and knew that they probably would not live since it was freezing outside and there was no food or shelter. It makes the reader sympathize with Chief Joseph and share his sorrow. Chief knows that the little children are freezing and starving to death. He says, “ My heart is sick and sad”, Chief’s heart is aching for all of what he has seen and been through. This helps describe his emotions, by telling us how he
