Simply spoken, the aging youth are facing a very large dilemma when it comes to making the transition from high school to college level courses. As many have been taught in the past, just as many will be taught in the future, the commonly known 5-paragraph essay is quickly becoming an eyesore in the writer’s community. John Warner published an article in which he deploys a full on assault to persuade others to do away with this type of essay format all together. In his article “Kill the 5-paragraph Essay” Warner establishes his credibility, paints an imaginary picture of the 5-paragraph essay and uses logical and emotional
At 11:15 on Monday, August 17, 2015, my first official college class, English 1101, began. In general, I had no idea what college classes would be like let alone how college English would be. Even though this class taught me a great deal in one semester, it took a large amount of time and effort to make the adjustment from high school. The simplistic writing style of high school was put to rest the moment the first college English class began. As a result, I learned quickly that college writing is complex and less systematic than high school writing. Five paragraph essays with three strict body paragraphs were no longer the norm for writing. Even though my professor helped guide my writing, I was no longer coddled through the whole writing
While the authors of these essays execute remarkable examples of rhetorical analyses, I myself could definitely improve on my own essays. For instance, my writing can be vague, especially when explaining how the rhetorical
Writing is a practice that most of us were taught when we were young. We were taught the basics of grammar, how to form a sentence, conjunction words, how to write paragraphs and more. Although we have learned this skill while growing up and have used the skill every year after entering kindergarten, this does not mean our writing process will ensure the best work. The authors that I chose each encourage their audience to excel in the art of writing in their own way to help with the writing process.
Before we look into Justice Roberts, role and his argument we must first understand the basis of his argument. The Supreme Court of the United States made a decision determining that the U.S. Constitution requires states to license marriages between each and every same-sex couple. This decision clearly swept away state laws defining marriage as solely between a female and a male. This defining decision determined that the Court must now hold that states must recognize same-sex marriages. This decision on Obergefell is something that I agree with and respect the process of how they got there. The court believed that marriage is among the most intimate decision that an individual can make. Justice Kennedy wrote the 5-4 opinion. That being said,
Before this English course, I would not feel compelled to incorporate transitions into my essays. Sentence transitions connect paragraphs and new ideas; it creates a better flow of the sentences. I now value the importance of formality in academic essays. I learned to avoid ending sentences with prepositions because it would not sound proper, to choose the right diction for clear understanding to readers, and to eliminate wordy expressions and needless words because being concise is key. Using active voice is strong and clear in academic essays because passive voice does not focus and emphasize on the subject but in the sentence object. During English 1101, I noticed the use of verb tenses from the rhetorical reading responses and the narrative essay; it is crucial to have the appropriate verb tense for a clear essay. In addition, finding different sources for research papers, such as the concept paper done this course, is pivotal for readers to consider the author credible. Beginning a sentence with a compelling subject will most likely evoke readers’ interests rather than just “there” or “it”. In all these years of sitting in an English class, I finally know why not to use second person: “You” does not apply to everyone when the author is talking about a narrowed topic. Lastly, the one aspect of writing that stuck with me the most was to make any work original and
My initial reaction to my essay was rather...meh. The writing was still very characteristic of Dave Gao. There were no gasps of horror induced by my former writing quality. But as I peered deeper into the language of the paper, I began to notice subtle, yet significant changes I had undergone throughout the year. I have to admit that at the time, I believed my essay was excellent—a verifiable work of beauty. Now, the essay looked crude, and a bit too simplistic. The vocabulary seemed rather
Peter Elbow’s article talks about the necessity to write with care. In order to write well,
While the American judiciary was expected to be away from politics and that justice as rain is equal to the rich and the poor and the democratic and republican and white and black and all segments of other American society of Latin and Red Indians and others.
The legal birth name given to me by my parents is John Roberts. My house is a one floor ranch style home located in Oak Lawn, Illinois. My home is filled with 4 people; my father, my older sister, my older brother, and myself. My two older siblings are also in college at this current time. The hobby with the most value to me is the sport baseball. Playing baseball in college was once a dream when I was a toddler, but I’ve made it a reality by going on to play at Trinity Christian College. My next hobby I enjoy would be cooking, which lets me be creative in a world that is so dull. The area I will study at Trinity Christian College will be business with a focus in Accountancy and a minor in marketing. This major will allow me to pursue a career that I enjoy after college. My academic background is that I attended all public schools going to Kolb Elementary, Simmons Middle
Writing is different for everybody. After reading the first part of On Writing Well by William Zinsser my perspective toward writing changed; starting off by the fact that he admitted that “writing is indeed hard” (12). This author, with humorous stories and anecdotes, explained several principles that help one understand how to write efficiently. First of all, be yourself! Zinsser emphasizes the fact that you should be true to yourself and your writing in order to engage a reader in your piece. Other essential principles are: Be precise and avoid clutter. He claims that “the secret to good writing is to strip every sentence to its cleanest components” (7). As I read, I noticed how important engaging a reader becomes to an author but Zinsser reminded me how my writing was made to “please myself first” and then an audience (25). The last but not least rules to follow are: to “avoid clichés” (Zinsser, 35) and “separate usage from confusing jargon” (Zinsser, 45). It is important to maintain your reader active by expressing clear thoughts and avoiding typical sayings that only make a literary piece

In this scenario, an “attractive young woman” (More & Miller, 2015) named Roberts was assigned to a field training police officer named Tibbetts. Although Roberts supervisor, Sergeant Williams, had some doubts on whether to assigned Roberts to Tibbetts, also known as the “ladies man” (More & Miller, 2015) Sergeant Williams paired them up. Eventually, Roberts completed her field training and probationary period with an exceptional evaluation from Tibbets. Once Roberts’s probation period had ended, Sergeant Williams noticed that Roberts still relied on Tibbetts for advice (More & Miller, 2015). Sergeant Williams also noticed a more than friendly “connection” between the two (More & Miller, 2015). In result, Officer Roberts was pregnant by Tibbetts and blames Sergeant Williams for assigning them to one another.
I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the “Common Sense” textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past
I have been writing since I have been in Middle School. I have realized that by college it was easier for me to write down my thoughts in order for me to remember what I have said or done. Writing out my thoughts gives me a sense of recollection, knowledge, and pacification that gets me through my day. I pictured writing to be as simple as jotting down a few sentences, but as I got farther in school I realized that there is more to it than just writing sentences. English has been my most difficult subject I have ever endured, but I have somehow been managing to make excellent grades and achieving all requirements. First in the essay, I will discuss my experiences in the English life that I’ve taken so far up until college. The second part will list my struggles in creating a thesis, a work cited, and properly citing my sources used in the papers.
