Many students hate reading and writing with a passion. They fail to realize reading and writing plays an important role in life. It helps an individual communicate, gathers information, and gain more knowledge. Writing and reading not only helps me gain more knowledge but also helps me show who I am by signing my signature. Reading and writing involves all class subjects. My experience with reading and writing have influenced the college student I am today.
As a reader and writer I always faced given assignments with the intent of doing exceptional jobs and take a sense of pride in my work to complete my tasks. As a reader, I will bore myself through out an entire book and realize I didn 't understand a single thing. Although as a writer, I can go on for so long losing myself on a topic because it feels more interactive. Reflecting on my experiences as a reader and writer have been very bold, I never really found a joy or an interest to become the exceptional student who stands out amongst others because, I always felt ok with myself and my results with the way I did things.
The impact both reading and writing have had on me throughout my school years has always been changing. While I have always struggled with reading comprehension, and anxiety in putting my thoughts into words when writing, I have found some relief when I am able to connect to a character in a book, or given freedom to find a topic I am interested in; which makes me excited and passionate about sharing my thoughts through writing.
From a young age, children in a first world country are expected to have the ability to read and write. But if you think about this, more than 100 million youths in the world are illiterate (UNESCO). Growing up in a place where pencils and papers are scarce, being able to read and write is a blessing, yet most kids in America just see it as something they’re forced to do in school. Although most children write just for educational purposes, I see writing as something much more. Writing truly allows for a greater emotional output than other types of communication and in my rhetorical self, it is an incredible way to express myself and my thoughts to others.
If I could describe my relationship with reading and writing it would most likely have to be, improving. Of course I would assume the same happens to all students that their reading and writing skills improve as they continue with their education. For me reading has been a passion, so my reading skills are pretty advanced and I can say I am able to read well. In my case, being a child of two Hispanic parents, I do have a slight accent that can get in the way and make my reading a bit rough. Usually it is not so bad, only on certain words that either I do not know how to properly pronounce or certain letters that my accent acts as a physical barrier where I have to sound it out more carefully or work around my accent. While that is the #1 major setback I have during reading. Even with that setback I can still say that I am confident in my reading skills, reading at a well speed, improving, reading various books all that combined allows to be able to read almost anything. What I do enjoy about reading is that I see it being able to bring myself into that world that the author is writing about or to envision the story they’re telling as a movie. I like the idea of just sitting back or laying down with a good book for hours and getting deep into whatever I am reading. Personally once I pick up a good book it is usually hard for me to put it down without the paranoia of not knowing how it ends will eat me up and I usually finish a book within a few days.
It is hard to do simple things anymore like read and write thoughtfully. In a world of distractions and the constant need to be socializing with people, it is a rare that many read or writing for pleasure or to get thoughts out. Two excerpts, “What Writing Is” and “Toolbox”, in Stephen King’s book, On Writing, talks to this trouble many face today. Although the writings aren’t specifically about people being too busy and having no time to read or write, but more of how writing should be done. Good writing leads to more enjoyed reading.
Writing is taken for granted nowadays. Thus, people don't take in consideration how lucky they are to be able to read and write. I can still vividly remember how when I was very young I used to get extremely angry for not being able to read the newspaper that my grandfather used to carry around. For that reason, there is a lot of importance to reading and writing, and I'm glad that throughout this year I was able to grow as a writer.
Do you remember the first book you learned to read? Well, I do and it shaped me into the reader I am today. During my early years in elementary school, I began to learn about what reading was and how to read books. I always remember my kindergarten teacher reading “Love you forever” before I would go to nap time everyday. I eventually learned to read my favorite childhood book on my own. However, this was a problem when I didn't want to branch out and read books to better my reading skills. Reading and writing are such and important aspect in our lives that get abused every day. It may sound silly, but as a young child I came in contact with books that impacted me, changed me, and shaped me into the reader and writer I am today.
No one is quite sure at what exact time reading became more for pleasure than for knowledge, but today, novels are expected to be entertaining and used to relax the mind. What an author cannot do to make their writing entertaining is to sit in their offices all day and churn out page by page of material. Authors must first feel the emotions they describe in order to enable the reader to relate to the text. In order to write an effective piece of writing, an author must first experience and understand their own lives and apply it to their writing in order to be engaging and of use to their reader.
“It takes the human voice to infuse them (words) with the shades of a deeper meaning.” (Angelou) This quote enhances people’s views on the written language versus the spoken language. Hearing the words creates a distinction between verbal and written communication. There’s only so much people can understand and interpret while reading. Literature withstands not because of the words on the page but because of the meanings behind those words. Verbal language is easier to grasp and identify the deeper meaning behind what is written on paper.
Through all of my accomplishments and disappointments, I have always been especially proud of the dedication and passion I have for my personal beliefs and values. If there is no struggle, there is no progress, with drive and a bit of hard work you can move mountains. Based on hard work and success, it goes hand in hand because life is designed to be tough. When I was 14 years old, I realized how important writing is in our everyday life. I realized that writing was something important in my life and it has changed my personal life. In my freshman year in High School during “Career Day,” one of the presenter who was a writer, helped me understand how important writing is.
I was born Sarah Jessica Taylor Caudill on a cold night in January, 15 years ago, at Baptist East. A bit funny, because I only go by Sarah when teachers force me to and I loathe Baptist East. I was named after an actress but I'm terrible at acting; I write. If writing didn't exist, I wouldn't either. If I couldn't make people feel things with words on a piece of paper, I wouldn't do anything at all. A world without words wouldn't be a world worth living in.
Reading and writing are two of the most important tools in my life, because without them I would not have an education. They form the basis of a class; for example, completing a lab in chemistry would not be possible without following a written lab procedure. These two skills are taught at such a young age, and as education advances students must continue to strive to reach a higher level. I can remember in elementary school, we were always pushed to reach the next reading level once we had successfully mastered the one we were on. It was always a competition for my sister and I to be at a higher level, I usually won. Even though I was excelling in reading it was the complete opposite for writing. It is something that has never come easy
