Peaceful resistance to laws is one of the strongest and most important foundations of a free society. Countless peaceful demonstrations have been led in the history of the United States, with positive outcomes that have helped shape the country.

Peaceful resistance in the United States of America, done with the right intentions, has a positive impact of a free society. I hold this belief because as humans we can be flawed in our ways of thinking and require something to draw our attention for us to realize our flawed views. Peaceful resistance is positive because it draws attention to an issue in society, it communicates a level of civility, and it attempts to initiate a positive way of addressing issues in society.

Peaceful resistance to laws positively impacts our free society. It allows us to make our voices heard and spread a message if there is a law that we find is either unfair or goes against our protected freedoms. Peaceful resistance has helped our country grow on multiple occasions. It has always been a part of our countries history and is well protected by our First Amendment rights. Due to this, There is little to know doubt that peaceful resistance has positively effected the lives of many Americans.

So, while peaceful protest is allowed, and even encouraged sometimes, violence and chaos is never welcomed. For example, one of the most recent protests was on the day of the Inauguration of Donald Trump. Most of the protesters were peaceful and cooperative, some people even say not to judge these pretests based on one burning car, but we have to! For the safety of everybody around, better be too careful than not careful at all. This point is civil disobedience at its worst. All that this violence does is cause a state of chaos and confusion, where then communities are vulnerable, and vandalizing and looting take place. The night of Donald Trump's election, when there was also protests, people were seen burning the United States flag, which is a crime, but not this night when there was already turmoil everywhere you looked. In my opinion, peaceful resistance to laws positively impacts a free society. The whole point of a "free society" is where the people have a say and are able to stand up for what they believe in. If a law seems unjust to them, they should have the right to protest it or disobey it, as long as it is done peacefully. Martin Luther King is one of the most influential leaders in history. Without his non-violent protests and civil disobedience, the unjust laws of segregation might still be in place. One of my favorite quotes from MLK's "Letter From Birmingham Jail" is when

America itself was built on the concept of adapting to meet the changing needs of society; its government outline was created so that the people could change laws when they needed to be changed, although the process is slow so as to avoid laws that are poorly thought out or do not represent the views of most American citizens. At several points in American history, there are times where only a few groups were fairly represented in government, and therefore, the needs of all the people were not represented accurately and we could not get the change we needed to happen. Peaceful resistance and civil disobedience are acts that can shape a nation. These acts are used to peacefully protest laws or recent events that were unjust or proper justice was not given. Sometimes these acts are required in order for a change to be made to an unjust law or event. Often times these acts can be seen as bad or violent, but they aren't. As long as they are peaceful, these acts are not bad. Peaceful acts of protest invoke thoughtful consideration of the event or law the protest is calling attention to. In the end, civil disobedience and peaceful resistance can positively impact the nation in which they are being demonstrated in.

Peaceful resistance to laws are not a threat to a free society; in fact, is is almost encouraged in a way. People who stand up for what they believe in is a staple in this country's history and what has made this great nation what it is. These people are, at the very least, standing up and resisting something that they don't believe in. They aren't the ones that just go with the flow all throughout their lives. It is admirable, even if one personally disagrees with what these people are resisting from. The real problem is when there are people who can't just resist laws in a peaceful way. A perfect example would be exactly what is going on lately with all of the riots since the election and inauguration of Donald Trump is president. One of the first cases of civil disobedience is recorded in Henry David Thoreau’s book entitled, “Civil Disobedience”.

People stand in the streets chanting and holding signs. They’re here because of some injustice they face. They will not comply with the laws that obstruct their natural rights, and they desire change. Some believe that resistance to laws could be harmful to the unity of a society however, it is absolutely imperative to the success of Republican government. Protest is empowering to underrepresented groups and brings attention to issues that need it, which could never be corrected without some form of resistance. When the inherent rights of the people are threatened by a government system, peaceful resistance to laws is necessary and will positively impact a free society.

When people resist the laws peacefully, it could negatively impact society because more and more people would probably agree with the person who is peacefully resisting, and they are able to create a massive impact and there could be things like riots and protests that might not be so quiet. For example, Rosa Parks resisted to give up her seat on a public bus to a white man. She just sat there and did not get up. She caused a scene and the white people were furious, but Parks just sat there. This is an example of peaceful resistance and because of that situation, Martin Luther King Jr change the country and made a speech that changed everything. Many people came together
