The cultural revolution is a strange period in Chinese history laced with intense struggle and anguish. The cultural revolution mobilized the all of society to compete for all opposing factions that they belonged to (Ong, 2016). Mao mobilized the young people of society during a background of political turmoil, which helped Mao to mobilize the students in order to enforce his political legitimacy and ideas (Ong, 2016). Mao’s charismatic authority created his personality cult and most defiantly leant a helping hand in mobilizing the red guard movement (Ong, 2016) (Weber, 1946) (Andreas, 2007). No matter which faction of the red guard they belonged to, they all mobilized against their common enemy; the better off, upper class. (Ong, 2016). Multiple ideologies within the youth led red guard movement explain why the movement gained momentum and became incredibly powerful (Walder, 2009).

The Climate of Rebellion in the Early Modern Ottoman Empire by Sam White is a study of the Ottoman environmental history during the early modern time. Even though environmental history field has been existed for a while, there is very little research on the Ottoman Empire’s environmental history. Despite the limited resources, White finds a different way to approach the issue and writes the first study about the environmental history of the early modern Ottoman Empire. In the beginning, White only questioned the impact of human utilization of the land on the environment of the Near East during early modern time. However, when White suspected that there was a connection between Ottoman lands longest drought and the Celali Rebellion in 1596, he decides to utilize his environmental history’s knowledge and perspective to study further about the political, economic, and social revolution of the Ottoman Empire (White xi).

Throughout history, many conflicts have happened, some with resolution, and other without. We often tend to think of solving conflicts with war, since most of our history classes are based around World War I, World War II, and so forth, but many conflicts were fought, and successfully won using nonviolent resistance. Many people would use Gandhi as a well known example. Gandhi’s plan of civil disobedience revolved around this big idea called “satyagraha,” which he explains as, “a satyagrahi should always possess civility and humility, qualities that indicated self-control and an humble approach to truth” (Gandhi 50). He later explains that satyagraha is “truth-force” and that truth is soul and spirit, or “spirit-force.” “It excludes the use of violence because man is not capable of knowing the absolute truth and, therefore, not competent to punish” (51). He used this strategy to fight for indian independence. Many other incidents in the world have been fought using civil disobedience, including Women’s Suffrage.

A very important memorable passage in this book is towards the end of the story when Tomi tries very hard to make his father’s boat rise. “”You can be very proud of him.” I nearly stopped breathing. Never had I heard Ojji-chan utter a hint of praise for anyone”” (246) One day Ojji-chan, Tomi’s grandpa, called Tomi, the main character, into the room they both shared. Inside he saw his late grandma`s altar with a traditional Japanese setting. Ojji-chan told the grandmother`s altar that she could be proud of what Tomi was doing. From someone who never praises anyone, Tomi did something extremely amazing and honorable by trying to bring his father`s sunken ship back up.
