My picture book “Adventures of Pengy” follows a baby penguin as he goes on an adventure to find his parents. The picture book connects with science by raising awareness to the effects of ‘climate change’, which is an important issue in creating a truly sustainable future. The impacts of climate change are explored when Pengy’s iceberg separates from the mainland where his parents are and his adventures begin. Due to this, global warming plays a significant role into the way the story is structured. The language used in the novel is informal as the intended audience is children. Adding formal language would make it harder for them to understand the story and would create confusion for them. Some of the informal language used in the novel for
Life on earth depends purely on climate, changes in it will directly affect the well-being and health of the population. Society fears climate change for its possible effects, such as rising sea levels and the melting of glaciers, which will ultimately result in health consequences towards mankind and environmental catastrophes. Humanity has to rely on their government to figure out ways of how this problem can be either reversed or slowed down as well as depend on their government to provide them with recent and valid information so they are aware of the problems they are facing. Climate change is a constant problem to all, even the characters in The Netherlands Live with Water written by Jim Shepard have to experience it firsthand. They are
Climate change, also known as global warming, is one of the biggest environmental challenges affecting the planet – the world is getting warmer, and humans’ activity is primarily to blame. Climate change is the leitmotif of Barbara Kingsolver’s novel Flight Behavior. Set in Appalachia, rural Tennessee, Flight Behavior tells the story of Dellarobia Turnbow – a 28-year-old unhappy housewife, stuck in a marriage brought on by a teenage pregnancy. Dellarobia was on her way to commit adultery when she stumbled on – what she believed was an act of god – a colony of monarch butterflies whose migration flight was disrupted. Kingsolver uses monarch butterflies as a device to illustrate the consequences of climate change. In the novel, Flight Behavior,
Many sentences are missing verbs or other important words. One example includes, “what she doin coming back here in dem overhalls?” This sentence is just one of the sentences missing the word “is” after its interrogative. The colloquial diction in the townspeople’s conversation helps set up their way of speaking and social status. The usage of words like “dat” and “lak” clarify the way the the townspeople are pronouncing words. Dialogue is spelled like it is said, and these words are coming from uneducated, poor people. While reading the dialogue for the first time may cause readers to stumble through the paragraph, the spelling also forces them to focus on everything that is being said. This is also the first time dialogue is spoken in the book, setting a contrast from the eloquent diction of the
In Part 2 of the book Field Notes from a Catastrophe, Man, Nature and Climate Change, author Elizabeth Kolbert presents global warming from the perspective that we can learn from the past.
Although the authors of this article regularly use a multitude of sources, data, and statistics to support their hypothesis, there are several (not all) which seem to be overly used and randomly cited. This may serve as a constraint to the audience because if the information presented does not seem to be entirely relevant, it may be a painless assumption for the audience that the issue at hand is not an incredibly urgent one, but instead, a rhetoric discoursed just for the sake of rhetoric. Also, the overwhelming wealth of information shown may serve as a distraction from the simple fact the rhetoric is trying to convey: penguins are affected by climate change; in result, penguins affect the environment.
The language used in the story is informal and there is no use of complex syntax or difficult vocabulary - in fact it is quite the opposite. With swearwords like hell and a use of irony and sarcasm between the narrator and Pat, the language and tone causes a sense of a relaxed relationship between the characters and adds a humoristic side to the otherwise almost sad story about EPICAC’s lost love and unrealistic dream.
Every character in the book talks like a normal, everyday person would so the readers can really understand everything they are reading. Being that the two main characters, Jack and Annie, are younger, elementary aged children it helps the reader understand what is happening because they are the same age as the characters. Even though the book is fantasy, the authors’ use of real people
In “Bill Mckibben: On climate change, it's time to talk, and act, tough.” (Op-Ed, August 9) Bill Mckibben writes about the effects of global warming and climate change on this Earth. The facts of Government ignoring it, fossil fuels destroying it, and how nations are reaching record setting temperatures. First off, Government and ignoring the causes of climate change is not helping climate change. All the evidence is in their face but they ignore it like it's a made up imagination.
Paul Nicklen likes his photos to combined art, storytelling, and conservation. He wants his photos to bring awareness to global warming and the effects it has on animals. He hopes that through his photography and public speaking he can open the eyes of others. He wants the world to realize that with transformation we can help the ecosystem stop the extinction of many artic

Kolbert provides compelling evidence of Global Warming in the Arctic from her hands-on experience accompanying scientists in the field. From the storm surges that threaten the Alaskan village of Sarichef to the warming (and even melting!) permafrost, the evidence all point to the irrefutable fact that the planet is warming up extraordinarily fast. In fact, the Keeling Curve gives us a rather explicit visualization of how greenhouse gases levels (CO2, in particular) are rising at unprecedented rates.
Thesis Statement: Global warming is a growing concern of scientists and researchers who believe that it is a serious problem for our planet. The concerns and research have also been questioned and have even been called myths. Millions of people find themselves affected by these weather pattern changes and are concerned for their futures. Activists on both sides of the argument are very passionate and not afraid to attack each other in every way they can. There are many questions that are still not answered, however, we continue to see drastic weather changes to Earth. We must go beyond the arguments and learn as much as we can to stop what could possibly lead to the destruction of our planet, our way of life and our future.
“Our generation has inherited an incredibly beautiful world from our parents and they from their parents. It is in our hands whether our children and their children inherit the same world” (Richard Branson). This quote is a brief rewording of the issue we have today with global warming. For those who are not aware of what global warming is, it is when too much carbon dioxide is added into the atmosphere. Global warming can cause sever hurricanes, intense weather, and many other natural disasters. For example, the lack of protection to our species and natural resources has led to many conflicts around the world. The lack of conservation of natural resources and need for habitat protection has had a major impact on the environment also.
Owen BuggyLanguage ArtsClimate change, global warming, and their effects on our planetClimate change is a change in the pattern of weather and some related changes in oceans, land surfaces and ice sheets, occurring over a time scale of a few decades.Global warming on the other hand, refers to only the earth rising temperatures in the air and waters. There has been much debate on global warming. It is important to explore multiple reasons why climate change happens, what causes it, and how often it occurs. There will also be a discovery of how it affects the environment and what specific animals are impacted. Humans have had a much larger impact on the environment that any other creature in the history of the planet. Their presence along with naturalenvironmental factors are shaping our planet like never before. Global warming is having a serious effect on our world. It causes things such as melting glaciers and ice cap in our north and south poles. Ice caps are of the most visible and common victim because ice can change its chemical properties faster than most other land masses. It's has been affecting glaciers more rapidly since the early 1980's. In some places we have seen a 30-40% reduction in surface area and 50% reduction in volume due to just an increase of 2-degrees Celsius.
Climate change. A phrase that encompasses a vast wealth of information, the totality of which is difficult to fathom let alone concisely elaborate upon in a condensed format such as a course or writing assignment. Through this course, the interconnectedness with which humans influence the balance of climate change is abundantly clear. Ecosystems plants and animals depend on are all connected and influencing one another but these scales are imbalanced, mostly as a result of human activities. The web of interconnectivity in climate change is complex, but there is a reemerging consensus at it’s core that human actions, such as global development, has major ramifications and the health and welfare of people and the environment are paying the price. Those daring enough to say they aren’t influencing climate change haven’t truly examined the many facets of their lives consuming energy and in turn increasing carbon emissions that alter climate. For most, transportation is a necessity. This usage requires energy consumption, most likely in the form of fossil fuel resource depletion and in turn the generation of carbon emissions. Transportation routes by land or sea may alter ecosystems that further elevate carbon emissions. With an understanding that the topic of climate change and carbon emissions is massive at best, the aim of this assignment will be to provide the reader with a basic understanding of greenhouse gases and carbon emissions and the relation to climate change.
