Perception is a key component of human interaction. According to Dictionary.com, the definition of perception is “an immediate or intuitive recognition or appreciation, as of moral, psychological, or aesthetic qualities of others.” In the business world, my co-workers would have perceptions about myself. These perceptions; however, could be impacted by stereotypes. Collins Dictionary defines stereotype as “a fixed general image or set of characteristics that a lot of people believe represent a particular type of person or thing.” Perceptions and stereotypes may blend together. Whatever the case, either one effect one’s reputation. In the business world, one’s reputation can create or destroy one’s image, therefore affecting how that person …show more content…
The three lists describing myself at work are unquestionably similar. All three lists center around the positive characteristics that I possess. Hard-working, helpful, and considerate/caring are the three traits that are used on all three lists. No matter what challenge I have before me, I work formidably. I have always been this way. In school, I must work more strenuously than others due to a learning disability. In communicating at work, it is sometimes challenging for the reason I act socially awkward; however, physically I work rigorously due to being raised this way. Frankly, these lists are similar solely on the grounds that I try to be myself as much as possible. In addition, I act the same around everybody. Finally, I remain extremely honest and tend to say what comes to mind. Therefore, I understand why frank, direct, and up front are traits my supervisor, co-worker, and myself agree upon when describing …show more content…
After all, both lists featured consistency. Therefore, my communication style is consistent, and I present myself truthfully. On the contrary, in analyzing the traits my co-worker used to describe me, the trait “sarcastic” disturbs me. This trait is not how I would like people to perceive me. Hopefully, this co-worker only perceives me in this light when joking around. Consequently, I can greatly influence one’s perception of me. Since my supervisor and co-worker used positive words to describe me, I never give anyone a reason to hate me; for this reason, I can easily influence one’s perception of me. Nonetheless, I will never change how I communicate in the
After taking the Big Five Personality Assessment, I was able to decode certain aspects of my personality and analyze whether different strengths and weaknesses. One strength I found was me openness to experience. Being open to others and their ideas has broadened my horizons. I have found that I have so much to learn from others. Whether their ideas are positive or negative, they provide feedback which overall has increased my communication skills. This is a recent strength for me. With prior companies, change was delivered as bad news, we were not taught to work with our peers but rather compete. With my new company I am experiencing the opposite side of the spectrum. I am encouraged to communicate with anyone needed, regardless of
In today’s society, many people use stereotypes, a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing, amongst these are race, gender, age, social class etc. Stereotypes are essentially used as categorization. Categorization and stereotyping are both fundamental to human nature; helping make the world more predictable. Stereotyping is most often used by everyday people who don’t know a person, so they judge them by how they look, or by how they carry themselves. Everyone, at some point in their lives, has been stereotyped based on different aspects of their person, such as “acting like a man” or “manning up” because I am a male.
c. I am open to all personality traits. I know that no two people are the same. Yes, I can work with anyone to complete a task or assignment. I recognize the things I do well in and I am able to see area where others excel.
Right outside a corner store, next to a stoplight, or at a park, there may be a homeless person asking for some sort of help; it can either be for a place to stay, money, or food. Many people are used to categorizing a group of people by a solo characteristic, known as a stereotype. Misconception, on the other hand, is a conclusion of someone or something that is wrong because it is based on faulty thinking or facts. Stereotypes and misconceptions appear to be similar, however, these two are not. A misconception is formed from having a stereotype. Stereotypes and misconceptions are built because many try, but are unable to understand a person or a group, or are just simply unwilling to understand the person or group. There are over a million
Stereotyping leads to prejudice. If I am walking in a park and I see a group of people walking towards me (lets say all are white males) and they are dressed up and look very nice. I do not panic, now another group is walking towards me and now this group is all men (African Americans) and they are dressed and conduct themselves just the same as the first group, but I panicked with this group. Why because I stereotyped the second group and if I was prejudice no matter how they dressed or acted I would be afraid of them because they are black. I judge them based on skin color and not on individuality.
What if I were to tell you that you that for the rest of your life, you would be unfairly judged, and possibly even discriminated against, based on false perceptions and ideas gathered from influences that only resemble you in the vaguest of ways, most likely being, skin color? And what if no matter how an individual person chooses to carry oneself, they will still commonly be regarded as a member of said misconceptions? Enter, stereotype: “A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.”(1)
I commend you for openly saying that you have such bias against that group of people. However, as a police officer, it is your responsibility to serve and protect the people. Meaning, you have to protect everyone regardless of their gender preference. You are on your way to acceptance because you have acknowledged the problem and you can do it. We have biases towards certain groups of people, race you name it. However, it takes a brave person to acknowledged
In social psychology, the phrase person perception has historically referred to the perception of others that leads to judgments of traits and dispositions. Fritz Heider proposed that people can attribute the behaviors of others to factors that are internal (personality, dispositions, etc.) or external (situational constraints), but that people are prone to make internal attributions (Ickes, 2000). These basic observations affected decades of research and provided an important foundation for two related theories, in particular. Harold Kelley’s covariation model, for example, described how people discern the attitudes of others based on simple factors surrounding observed behaviors (Sadalla et al, 1994). Similarly, Edward E. Jones
To a young me, the world was black-and-white. The virtuous will remain good while the immoral will stay wicked, no shade of grey existing. The notion that humans can change their nature was ludicrous. Living in a society where sorting human beings into stereotypes is the norm only served to reinforce that idea. One day, though, the action someone who should stand for justice forced my eyes opened.
I demonstrate a flexible characteristic that allows me to communicate and explore positive outcomes for professional and personal conditions. I can display humor when communicating with people, the light-hearted aspects allow me to feel comfortable when communicating with people. We realize this, and think about the assumptions we’ve made, sometimes it's too late, and sometimes...not so much.
Many individuals agree that at a given point in life they have committed some form of prejudiced. Even with a difficult aspect of understanding stereotypes. The best thing to do can be to give people a chance when it comes to judging them. One of the following examples occur to myself in my first year of college. However, throughout life I always never showed prejudiced not even a small amount. Although, each day can be different the best option seems to be understanding of others. In a more detailed version the prejudiced seem as I misinterpreted against African American classmates. Soon my understanding about appeared extraordinary, and change my perspective towards black individuals in a broader picture. In my experience the following event occur, mainly because it is human nature to discriminate and label just by the looks of someone.
In all honesty, every single part of Santa Clara’s vision appeals to me. A strong belief of mine that has been solidified through the communities I have joined this year is that being uneducated leads to division. One of the communities is ALLY/APANO, who are individuals, mostly students, who unite to fight against the social injustice in the world. We do so through protest and campaigns that is aimed to educate the public, if we can eliminate the stereotypes placed upon each other and make others understand, this would unite us. One of the biggest accomplishment made is that ethnic studies are now being implemented and added to Portland Public Schools curriculum, one step closer to the big picture of unity. Another fun fact I’ve learned through
Perception is the process people use to make sense out of the world by selecting, organizing, and interpreting information. Attitudes affect perceptions and perceptions affect attitudes. A person might have developed an attitude that supervisors are insensitive and arrogant based on seeing a pattern of this behavior from past supervisors. If the person gets a new supervisor this attitude will continue to affect the way they perceive their new supervisor. Despite the fact that the new supervisor takes the time to understand and respect the employees’ needs this perception will
