When one talks about personal identity is often based on the prevailing belief that identity is constructed by morality, which forms within oneself. Although this is true, to create morality, one must look to outside influences. Using the novels, the Kite Runner and Mister Pip it can be proven that relationships, ethnicity, and important life events create a personal identity. The meaningful relationships that Amir has with others are significant to the development of his identity. Although there are several important people in Amir’s life, the two most important are his father Baba, and his friend Rahim Khan. This knowledge was not only necessary for Matilda’s identity development but to the other children’s as well. “We wanted our cousins and our mothers and grandmothers to tell us stuff.” (Jones p.53) Mr Watts had also introduced the children to the book Great Expectations, which is allowing Matilda to explore new elements that will contribute to the formation of her identity. “We needed a teacher, Mr Watts became that teacher. We needed a magician to conjure up other worlds, and Mr Watts had become that magician. When we needed a saviour, Mr Watts had filled that role.” (Jones p.185) Whether from a teacher or others, education is an essential ingredient to creating an identity and is found in the relationships we have with others. Although relationships are critical to identity development, the ethnicity plays an important role as well. Amir is born as a Pashtun and Amir is expected to act a certain way. Baba stresses this fact on his death bed when he points out that Pashtuns are stubborn but reliable which has a significant impact on Amir’s identity. “We may be hard headed and I know we’re too proud, but, in the hour of need, believe me, that there’s no one you’d rather have at your side than a Pashtun.” (Hosseini p.142) Not only are Pashtuns hard headed and proud, but they also have significant advantages over other tribes such as the Hazaras.
