Personal Leadership
Introduction For the past couples of month, I have gained a lot of knowledge and learnt about leadership and its challenges. Through the innumerable discussions, case studies, lectures and readings, I got to acquaint myself with the various leadership challenges and the ways leaders can rectify and develop pragmatic solution top the leadership problems. As an individual with a desire to become a top CEO in a listed company, I got interested in the topic of leadership as I felt it prepared me for the future daunting task that I am likely to face should my dream come true. Various leadership lessons leant in this unit made my learning enjoyable and practical.
Discussion The first leadership lesson learnt was the difference of being a leader and that of being in leadership position. Most people including those who have management classes have still failed to comprehend the difference between a leader and those who are not leaders but are in the leadership position. From my studies, I got to learn that leadership is an act of influencing others more than they influence you in order to achieve organization goals ADDIN EN.CITE Kouzes2002127(Kouzes & Posner, 2002)1271276Kouzes, J. The influence that a real leader should have is that which enhances the performance of the organization and not those that
The path to a personal leadership philosophy is made up of three parts. Each individual aspect is a facet of a complete whole. Much like a timeline that includes a past, present and future, my personal philosophy consists of a foundation, action, and growth. If you do not understand where your foundation of leadership came from, you will have problems acting in a leadership capacity. Also if don’t pay attention to how you are acting as a leader you cannot know in what ways you need to grow. Why should I spend the time and effort in developing myself as a leader? The Gunner’s Mate rating has a strength of just over 600 members. Maritime Force Protection Unit Kings Bay has 31 Gunner’s Mates assigned to it. I have a full five percent of the Gunner’s Mates in the Coast Guard that I lead. During my four year assignment at MFPU Kings Bay, approximately 55 Gunner’s mates (9.2 percent) will have been under my leadership. I see that as an enormous responsibility. As a young Gunner’s Mate I saw my senior leadership as people capable of effecting great change on the rating. Now today I am in the position to have that same impact.
Leadership is, and always has been, a vital aspect of social and economic constructs. It is essential to the survival of societies, industries, organizations, and virtually any group of individuals that come together for a common purpose. However, leadership is difficult to define in a single, definitive sense. As such, theories of leadership, what constitutes a great leader, and how leaders are made have evolved constantly throughout history, and still continue to change today in hopes of improving upon our understanding of leadership, its importance, and how it can be most effective in modern organizational cultures.
Leadership books abound in modern publishing with each promising proven technique to make leaders and teams more effective. Each of the five books assigned provided a different perspective of leadership but several key themes resonated through each. In their own ways, the authors addressed leader identity, risk, competence, hard work, knowledge of people and proper view of self.
According to dictionary.com leadership is defined as, the position or function of a leader, a person who guides or directs a group: Its synonyms include guidance, influence, control, direction and supervision. These are all qualifications that are needed to be an effective leader. All characteristics are not necessarily needed at the same time and do no need to be used for each subordinate. This paper will identify my personal leadership philosophy along with theories to support my leadership style.
Phase 1 of the Personal Leadership Philosophy Paper presented the opinion and supporting information establishing that; leaders are products of opportunity, birth and environment, but of these; opportunity influences great leadership the most. Furthermore, it was discussed that assigned leadership is a cancer to corporate America and this point is illustrated in the following example. While employed at Deloitte and Touché Consulting Group (DNT) we engaged ARCO, a major oil and gas company, to develop and implement an email migration strategy that consisted of 1200 Arco users at their subsidiary company, Vaster Resources Inc. In the initial meeting we were introduced to a gentleman, we will call John Smith for the purposes of this paper,
Leadership represents an essential element for the success of an organization, it has a profound impact on the achievement of the goals. The leadership unites an organization efforts and directs toward the behavior of individuals in line with the achievement of objectives and deliverables. Organizations composed of members from different cultures, mentalities, and personalities representing groups of people work together in a specific regulatory framework and in accordance with certain operating procedures. These groups or work teams need to coordinate among them in order to reach the specific objectives. In this context, it always highlights the role of leadership in influencing an organization. The Strategic Leadership Instructor is doing his best to develop our leadership, and exploiting his innate cleverness and natural sensation to support his fellows to succeed. He helps us in enabling of taking advantage of the actual innate sixth sense that God gave it, and exploiting the energy and the ability to distinguish. I learned a lot from readings and during the sessions, I learned from my colleagues some of the basic functions of leadership through their experiences. I learned how to develop my skills that will support my style of leadership. During the discussions I have changed some of principles and ideas that already I have, and the others make me to work on developing them. It became clear to me, when I read the
The theme of leadership is relevant today for many areas of life. After consulting the dictionary, one can construe the leadership as an inner force that manifests in the ability to influence and to control others. A person possesses this quality when he/she can guide masses and move them to the goal, take the consequences and realize the responsibility for himself/herself and others. Shakespeare once remarked that to be a good leader, first of all, one should serve faithfully and loyally. Otherwise, leadership is a destructive force: either you succeed, or it destroys you. “Macbeth” and “Lord of The Flies’ are epitomes of both leadership patterns and worth.
My personal leadership philosophy is based upon a few core values that I follow. I live by honesty, hard work, loyalty, and strong support and care for family and friends. Some of the key attributes of a good leader are: providing direction and guidance, inspiring followers to always do their best, show courage and confidence to stand up for your beliefs, have a passion and commitment for what you are doing. A good leader will share their vision of success with the group and make sure everyone understands the direction that they need to go in. The leader needs to make sure that each member knows their expectations and how important their efforts are in reaching the goals of the organization. This means that a leader must empower others to have a sense of ownership for their work. This is accomplished by giving clear goals and objectives and then giving them the freedom to complete their objectives without micro managing them. Another leadership trait is the ability to motivate and inspire the group. The leader needs to be the spark that ignites inspiration and passion for the job. This can be accomplished by positive reinforcement while rewarding and recognizing good results. Good leaders will always lead by example and demonstrate the values of honesty and integrity. There is no grey line between what is right and wrong. To me honesty is being truthful to others while keeping your uprightness of character. It is matching what you say with what you do. A leader will always
My father once told me that, “everything we do— be it in academia, at work, social or family life—we are guided by principles, beliefs and values that collectively form our ideology of life.” I believe that every leader, to a certain extent, is shaped through her individual personal experience. Although in some cases, we may not realize to what extent our personal assumptions and beliefs shape our ability to lead or be led.
The more information one has to understand leadership the further one will be able to go in one’s career. Leadership is not easy, one has to have the ability and buy in of the team to be successful in any project.
Synergy:The term synergy will always tie in with teamwork. A leader must work with a team to create positive outcomes. A Team leader who tends to dominate

My personal leadership philosophy is “Leadership through personal example and ownership”. Throughout my career, I have served with several leaders that inspired me and solidified this philosophy in me. CDR Fritz Kuebler was one of those mentors and continues to be a source of inspiration. He could always be looked to for how to handle difficult situations. When faced with adversity or a leadership challenge he could be seen taking a few brief moments to internally analyze and then issue a decision for a team to follow. While many did not see this brief pause, as an aspiring leader I could observe this habit. As his Command Chief, I had unprecedented access to him and often asked about certain issues that were facing the command. I asked him about these moments prior to his decisions and he revealed the true nature of this process. During the few seconds before his orders he quickly analyzed three things. How will his decision affect the mission, how will it impact those who follow his orders, and how can he “own” failures should they present themselves.
Leadership is something that can be taught (Northouse, 2015. There are some valuable theories, which will be discussed later in this paper, how a leader can develop into having a strong influence in any daily aspect of their lives. Also later in this paper it will be discussed the various styles of leaders that can affect the behaviors of the actions of each leader. Each leader can learn these attributes or some of them just have the natural capability of being a leader.
This report hopes to answer questions about Leadership and the steps that can be taken to empower individuals as leaders. It contains examples of decisions made in a real organisation, however many of the methods used have not been taught by formal education and you will find that leadership is more of a way of life rather than a simple process.
