Personal Narrative: My Liberal Arts Education

A great impact that I witnessed that year is when I took the school field trip to numerous colleges close to the city. I had never been to a university or even a community college. Therefore, me going to those visit gave me a greater idea on what type of college I'd like to attend. One of the colleges I remembered we toured to was Lakeland Community College. I really liked the aspects that it has, with the classrooms even the on campus living. Taking trip like that sets your mind up but also prepares you to know what to expect and look for when you are college searching.

Being in this class gave me insight on the way that I learn. I’ve had my share of jobs along with schooling and various other learning experiences. Some good, some bad but I can honestly say that I never noticed the pattern on how I learn. Now I know I learn more by being more of a hands on person. Also utilizing my thinking and problem solving skills has helped with my growth. I also found it important to use my reflective observation too. Mostly combining different learning styles have helped me in life to understand the way I learn and the benefits that could come if I use my strengths to further my ambitions.

I have learned how to ask better questions and to talk to my teachers when I need help or do not understand the concept well. I make sure that I have a relationship with my teachers and introduce myself at the beginning of each semester. Learning how to communicate with my teachers

Going into college, I would like to peruse many of my goals. I would like to start out getting my general studies in and then build up to become a Registered Nurse. After I accomplish becoming a Registered Nurse I would like to work on becoming a Nurse Practitioner. One reason I am striving to complete these goals is to be able to have a good future and hopefully a good job will come out of this. Neither of my parents went to college and I want to be able to accomplish that for myself.

1. What experience do you like talking about the most? What has been the most interesting, intriguing, and exciting part of your life- why, and what did you learn from it?

As I sat on the couch getting ready for the first day back at school, I heard the phone in the kitchen ring. I stood up to go answer it and I heard loud footsteps coming down the stairs. My mother was running down the stairs to answer it just in case it was one of her work calls. I noticed that her voice started to crack as if she was going to cry and the smile that she once had on her face had disappeared. The person on the other end of the phone was my Uncle Dylan from California calling to let us know that Aunt Liz had died in a car wreck. We were so devastated but little did we know she left me $12k. A couple days later I received a letter in the mail saying that I had to use it to help pay for my tuition. I am looking to attend the nursing program at Lindenwood, Missouri State, or St. Louis University.

HELLO GUYS!!! I have something veryyyyyyyy important to tell you! After all of my stressing about FAFSA ( Free Application Federal Student Aid) , Colleges, and Transportation, I decided to further my education at Rowan University. It took me a long time to make this decision because this wasn’t my first choice! My first choice/ dream school was LIU Brooklyn ( Long Island University) in Brooklyn, New York. I was recently accepted there and planned on attending there, but their out-of-state tuition was extremely high! Their tuition was $33,000 a year and poor black man like myself, cannot afford it. I really loved LIU because it's a great school, beautiful campus, and most of all, it's in New York. I had my whole planned before it even started,

Last year I took a few classes at Columbus State Community College. There were definitely some changes that I had to make so my life could still run smoothly. Some of the things that changed were my extracurricular activities. I had to swim less often than before because I had classes or homework that I needed to do. My study habits didn’t change very much, surprisingly. I still did my work sooner instead of later. I won’t say I always did it as soon as I could because while that would have been optimal it didn’t always work out. And I made sure I always got the work that was due first, done first. I started my college education at Chandler-Gilbert Community College, then to GCU. My passion to help others was evident in the classroom resulting in my professors recommending that I became a tutor at the college’s learning center. I worked there for three semesters tutoring math and science. In addition, I volunteered at Chandler Regional Medical Center where I accumulated over 300 service hours working in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). After earning my bachelor’s degree, I was offer a position to work in the CV-ICU at Banner-University Medical Center. I am also an RN supervisor at Southwest Behavioral

Before I became interested in Spelman college, I knew the type of education that I wanted to receive. I wanted an education that would cater to my many endeavors. I wanted to learn wholly, passionately and creatively. During NSO, when Dr. Burnett spoke, I realized receiving a liberal arts education is more than learning it is an act of resilience, and an act of courage.

Well for me writing is my weak point. Although it is my weak point I have still been learning and I am up for more opinions on how to better my writing skills. I can say that my writing skills have gone up some since I have been enrolled Bethel University. When I first started here I was terrified, especially when I found out that Bethel is a writing based college. I still get nervous and scared at the beginning of every class and I stay nervous till I see how I am doing in the class. There has been many teachers that have helped inspire me and those that have taught me to never give up no matter what. So the advice I would give to my boss or family is to never give up. I learned that if I put a little more effort than I usually do then I could see a huge increase in performance and my grades. I learned that if I really pay attention to the directions that were given to me when they are given, it is a much easier time in the class. Also if I do not understand something, just asking someone next to me or the teacher or even a teacher's aid really helps so I fully understand the instructions

one of the biggest decisions of my life was choosing a major for my post high school education. Many people seem to have a general idea to what they would like to major in at a relatively young age while others have a more difficult time deciding what to do with their future and sadly I was one of those unlucky few.

The classes I have taken have taught me how I learn the best and how to study more effectively. Many students are verbal learners, meaning they learn best by listening to material given to them. I, on the other hand, learn best by doing the activity myself. I never knew this fact about myself until after a very brutal physcology class. Also, college is said to be all memorization.
