It was late afternoon as Julia and Peter were playing outside with their favorite bouncy ball their father had given them before he left. “Hey Peter, when do you think Mom will take us to the store so we can see Mr. Franciszek?” “I don’t know Julia, you know how Mother is when it comes to a clean house.” As if on command, their Mother walked out and told the kids to put their bouncy ball up so that they could head over to the store that way they’d be back before curfew. They put their ball up in the chest along with the two teddy bears their father had also left with them. They began to walk down the sidewalk, down to the end of the road to the stop sign, where they would take a left, then a right, bringing them right on the main road where the store was. They arrived to the store, realizing all the lights were out and a Nazi flag was hung from Mr. Franciszek’s apartment above. A notice was posted on the storefront, stating the store would be shut down until further notice. Peter and Julia exchanged concerned looks as their Mother talked on the phone with Mr. Franciszek’s son. She asked many times if he knew what had happened.
