My skill set includes, but is not limited to:
Freelance Creative Writer
I am an independently educated English major looking for part-time to full-time work in the field of writing. Language arts, creative writing, proofreading, research, news and customer relations are my natural areas of expertise. I excel in communication skills. I spend much of my day writing fact based articles and opinion based articles of my own accord. I research, verify and write about anything and everything from politics and religion to finances and health and wellness. I have, independently and through schools, studied topics such as law, health and wellness, religion, politics, real estate, carpentry, social trends, child care, customer service and sales and many
My writing experiences have been minimal. So far I have only learned the basics of writing, like forming sentences and forming sentences to put into paragraphs. I can tell that my writing has improved throughout the years. I hope to improve in writing essays, paragraphs, stories, and speeches so that I have no errors with editing and creating the final product. I predict that I will be a well rounded writer when I graduate from Newman University.
During this spring semester, I have grown in many ways as a writer, and a student. I have started to realize, and accept the flaws that I have created in my writing. In the past, I never looked into my writings and saw my problems, and if I did, I did not accept that they were problems. In my writing pieces in the past, I was very hard-headed about what I thought was correct versus what was actually correct. I have also become More familiar with different formatting options on Microsoft Word to create a more professional piece or writing. However, figuring out all the parts of writing and making them work together is the most difficult part of writing.
My mind can never be quieted. I am constantly thinking of moments or ideas or fantasies. What is all this dreaming worth if I cannot share it with the world? That is why I have gone on a quest to find an outlet for my thoughts. It has not been a process that has been traversed with ease, but through this journey, I have found many pastimes that have helped form my thoughts and beliefs.
Writing is a key in everyday life, whether it is going unrecognized or not communication is largely dependent on writing rater then face to face relations. Growing up writing an essay or a story wasn’t always as important as sending that one text out to a friend. Many times instead of working on an assignment people tend to text, and write on social media instead. Although by doing this in the end, you are still writing, although for some it doesn’t count as that text maybe something they are passionate about unlike their assignment. The concept of writing then goes unacknowledged and isn’t looked at as a fun activity for many. This tends to happen after submitting assignments and not receiving the grade you may
This semester involved many writings that challenged my process in ways big and small. The variety of prompts each had their own details that required me to change perspectives as well as research topics to test my abilities as a writer. The topic that I felt helped me grow as a writer the most was the Personal Narrative. This essays caused me to think in its own way and only after completion was I able to effectively use the methods it taught me in my other assignments.
My writing journey has been pretty remarkable over the years. A lot of trial and error was utilized in discovering the writing style and techniques that would give me the most sense of accomplishment. I’ve been learning through the unit learning activities so far as College Composition II will be a bit more challenging due to the expectation of being able to write an effective academic piece from a formal perspective. There is always room for improvement which is why this semester I want to work on three aspects of my writing: sentence structure, grammar, and learning how to effectively grab my audience’s attention. Sentence structure and grammar have been difficult aspects for me to grasp in my writing due to the lack of frequency in writing academic papers.
My identity as a writer comes from how I view a piece of writing. I view it as art. To create something that intrigues someone, that makes them angry, sad, or confused is my goal when I write. I want the audience to feel something. It just so happens that for most people, writing with the strategy of pathos in mind is always extremely effective. My environment growing up was that of complete creative freedom and I had the privilege to be able to explore my interests at such a young age. My experience with growing my skills as a writer I think started with my love for creating artsy things if you will, but after many years of being stuck as a novice, I developed exponentially during my high school years. I came into my own as a student and learned how to let my longing to stay creative creep into every project I could get my hands on. But I struggled where I perceived creativity wasn't needed i.e. math and history. I became uninterested and skated by in that aspect. Why would I put so much of my time into something that so strongly opposed who I am as a person?
My past writing experience has ranged from writing one paragraph free flowing writing, to having a prompt to write about and typing about 4 or 5 pages. In high school, I do not think I have typed more than 5 pages on one topic. When I first started to learn to write, my teachers mainly looked at my grammer or just simple spelling errors or other simple mistakes. However, as I've progressed through school my teachers started to look at paragraph structure, thesis statement, conclusion, citations along with other improtant details that I will be using when I write papers. I did not take compostion in high school as I just took English I, English II, English III, and English IV.
My writing portfolio includes my best work that was completed within The Beginners Creative Writing class. I must say that this class was completely different from what I thought it was going to be like. I assumed that it would be like any other "English" class. I was very wrong. I really enjoyed this creative writing class. I have learned a lot about the many different writing styles. This class also helped me to dig deep and write from the depths within instead of just surface writing. Even though poetry is my favorite form of writing; I must be honest and say it was the most challenging for me. I love to write poetry, but I was not very familiar with the literary terms, different structures, styles/forms of poetry. I have always stayed within
My growth as a writer was evident in my second peer review. In contrast to the first review, I offered comments concerning sentence structure, grammar, parallelism, APA style, and clarity as well (C. Twyman, personal communication, May 2015). It was obvious that my understanding of scholarly writing had improved. I was starting to see how the conventions of writing worked together to form a complete paper, however I was still unsure about my ability to analyze competent scholarly writing. Although my comments had increased in variety, I still found myself unsure about how to give appropriate directives. In communication with Cheryl, I wrote, “maybe reword this” (C. Twyman, personal communication, May 2015). This short but sweet comment
I grew up in Panama City, a beautiful country located in Central America, like many other kids I learned how to read and write in home, and in the school at a very young age. However, I learned how to read and write in Spanish which is my native language. Books have been part of my life since I was a kid, I remember reading story books, comics, and classic stories with my parents almost every night after school. Both, my mother and my father would prefer reading a book than watching television, nonetheless, reading was a common thing to do in my home. Even though, I love reading, I have never been a good writer; writing have been the thing which I have struggled the most in Spanish and in English. I first started
As a writer, there are many challenges I face, requiring strength in different areas in order to overcome them. My greatest challenges would be momentum, writer’s block, and confidence. When a writer understands their challenges they can become their greatest strengths. When I am writing it is important to have the adequate momentum to get from notes to final draft. I often find myself losing steam and have difficulty getting my momentum back. Allowing myself to get distracted, taking too many breaks, or starting my writing when I know I will not have time to complete it all, contributes to my failed momentum. Writer’s block can easily be considered the Achilles heel for all authors. When I can’t form a thought worth writing down, I
I have always loved writing ever since we started having writing prompts in elementary school. I was always so excited to give out a story. I would make these elaborate stories that evolved some fantasy aspects. The only thing that would mess me up in my writing process is that I would have a difficult time setting up the start of the story. The video talked about this, and advised me to get a journal or diary. This would help me write anyway I like without judgment. I am fairly new to the revision part of writing. I would always turn in my draft as is, but now that I think about I would love someone who can give me some advice on my drafts. I've never had a full writing process myself. This has lead to writer's block in the past drafts.
Growing up my main focus was surviving it wasn’t until about the 3rd grade until I really learned how to read. When I was young I switched schools, went through foster care, and was homeless on a few occasions. After months and months of going from Grandpas to Moms to Grandmas. Getting lost in Foster care and getting taken away from my Mom finally something steady happened. 3rd grade came around and my Aunt and Uncle received custody of my younger brother and I. Finally I could build a focus towards school my two all time favorite books as a child were The Giving Tree and my Spiderman comic book. The Giving Tree became one of my favorites only because it was one of the only books I had. My God parents two granddaughters and
I have never seen myself as a writer. I have never ever even fantasized about writing. I am a practical
