Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly Concert When exploring my culture, there are a few things that come to mind. I love to sing, dance, and eat good food. My culture has been known to use the art of music to get through whatever life brings our way. Music becomes our therapy, which can be sensed in our soulful voices. I have experienced the joy and pain of music in many ways. My favorite encounter of music as a cultural experience was the Maze featuring Frankie Beverly Concert. I have attended their event/concerts in Charlotte, NC several times, in Atlanta, GA, and Columbia, SC. Experiencing a Maze featuring Frankie Beverly concert promotes unity through singing, dancing, and happiness for all who attend. This band has been performing for …show more content…
They are similar because both events provide passionate singing and dancing. These events are different because the festival Latino event is a two-day event whereas the Maze and Frankie Beverly performance is a one-day event. Maze and Frankie Beverly have always been a band of their own sound and style. According to Allmusic, “their influences come from others of their culture.” Beverly was initially influenced by gospel music in church. His love for singing shifted to R&B. He was influenced by artists such as, Frankie Lymon, Marvin Gaye, and the Isley Brothers. Anyone of any culture who has attended this event would definitely admire the longevity of their performing career. They will also enjoy the passion and energy being transferred from the band to the crowd. Beverly is 71 years old, and can still perform a full show. That within itself speaks volume for his passion for the music. Not only is Beverly voice a phenomenon, the band players are exceptionally talented as well. The band has a guitar player that can make you think the guitar is actually singing. The notes he plays on the guitar will send chills down your …show more content…
The band was never able to make that crossover many artists dreamed of. When Beverly signed the first contract with Capital Records, the agreement was that he gets to retain all of the publishing rights to his songs. His reason for performing wasn’t to make a crossover. It was all about the love for his music. He stayed true to his type of music. In questioning why he was underrated it has been suggested that it stems from him not selling his publishing rights. Michael Burton first encountered with the group was in 1973 at a show at Contra Costa College. Burtons mind was blown and he became the group’s manager until 1979. “Burton left the Maze crew on friendly terms in 1979. He still resides in California, working in music management. He believes the recording industry never gave Beverly a fair shake because the singer refused to sign over his prized publishing rights.”(Britt, 2017) The industry never had a reason to fully promote the band since they weren’t getting most of the proceeds, as they would get from other artists that had sold their publishing rights. Other bands may have gotten discouraged by not getting the acknowledgement they have worked so hard to earn, but not Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly. They have continued to perform while loving every moment of what they do. Their
As an 8-year-old child, the worlds scary place. Everywhere you look there’s something terrifying. From people the size of giants, roaming the streets, with no care what so ever with their surroundings or just realizing that in a few years would come the most difficult and emotionally unstable time of my life. Sure, those things may be slightly exaggerated, but what I do know is the most horrendous experience I had in the land of joy that ultimately ruined my love Disney for many years.
My grandfather was put in a unique position as a music teacher. Music according to him is a "universal language." Each generation and culture embraces music in reaction (and in
Since I was raised in a small, country town in Oklahoma I definitely heard my fair share of country music. For the most part I wasn’t a fan of mainstream country music because it all sounded very similar, in my opinion. I found Blue Grass music or more Folk inspired country music to be more interesting. But when I was offered the opportunity to attend a Jason Aldean concert with a few friends this semester I didn’t want to miss out. I knew what to expect going to a Jason Aldean concert and that was a lot of boots and a lot of pearl snaps, and I was definitely correct. Jason was in Oklahoma on February 5th for his “We Were Here” tour. I had never been to a country music concert before and was looking forward to the new experience.
culture is shown through their music. For instance, the way Willie Brown blowed the harmonica
This past weekend I visited the Numunga powwow and the cultural traditions are absolutely phenomenal. Being free to the public to experience and expressive dance that it routed back to the ancestors. True expression of one's diversity with intense beauty. I am not Native American but how I do treasure and appreciate different cultures. In these type of social situations communities are learning and exciting way. With the goal of acceptance of all people that could have personal meaning and understanding into the future.
Being born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, I was exposed to many different cultures. A few of which were Hispanics and German. They both had different languages and customs. My mom would take us to a festival in San Antonio yearly that was called the “Texas Folklife Festival”. There, our family would experience many different cultures with singing, dancing, food, art, and language. Our family enjoyed learning about the different places others came from and how they celebrated their heritage. Learning to appreciate where others came from and their back ground, gave me a better appreciation for differences.
Another big part of who people are culturally is shown through the food in that culture. At our Christmas Eve dinners there are multiple Hispanic dishes being served. Some of my favorites that are served at this time of the year are the homemade tamales my great grandma makes and menudo that my grandma makes. Every culture has different foods that define their culture. So these two dishes, the tamales and menudo, show who I am culturally. All of these things about my culture have had a major impact on who I am as a person. Family, tradition and food from my culture have meaning to me and show who I am
Last week Middle Tennessee State University ( MTSU) invited a professional Conjunto musician players. As a history class students we had to go and see their performance because Conjunto music is a traditional Mexican music. We had a lot of fun listening to their music and personally I would love to go again and listen to this music because this music is take you away back to the old Mexican music. Therefore, while you listening to this music, you feel like this music is talking to your soul.
Knowledge comes together with peace. Without peace, a person could not carry the knowledge because there isn?t any peace to make the songs or stories heartwarming to the soul. A person has to have passion for what they know or want to share to another person. In this case, knowing and understanding your culture is
I was born in the vast city of New York and raised in East Harlem and because of this, culture was a recurring theme in my life as a kid. To begin, New York City is extremely diverse and East Harlem is filled with a mixture of many cultures. Kids around me were of different cultures yet, we all had similar interests. As a kid, I had no idea what missing something felt like, as I always had food on the table, I always had shoes and clothes on me and most importantly I had my two loving parents.
On Sunday September 17, at 10 a.m until 6 p.m. I went to an event to celebrate Las Fiestas Patrias. La Que Buena; a speaking Spanish radio station made this event happen. The radio station had guest like “Voz de Mando” “Christian Nodal” “Maximo Grado” and many more. These artist play “Regional Mexican Music,” they are different type of music that fall into this category. For example; corridos, mariachi, banda, Conjunto norteño. The musicians just go play live for the audience and people enjoy eating their favorite Mexican food and listen to them play. There was food like, tacos, birria, posole, menudo, quesadillas, etc. Also, they had Mexican desserts and candies like, “Tostilocos” one of my favorites, nachos con carne asada, mangoniadas, raspados
There are different disciplines within the humanities, but there is one that I feel that has influenced my cultural identity the most…music. I say music because from the start music told my culture’s history; informed others about deeds or events that had taken place, also, music was and
El Paso best defines itself as the truest wafer of Wild West. Its streets are so ancient that they have witnessed the existence of the likes of Billy the Kid, Wyatt Earp and other lawless times. This is the same place where the unfortunate “Four Dead in Five Seconds” shootout occurred. However, these are not the events that have put El Paso in the limelight but it is the blending of culture and traditions that take place in the city. After all, it is the meeting point of New Mexico and Old Mexico. Annually the city holds the Neon Desert Music Festival and Sun City Music Festival each with over forty music artists from the dominions of soft and hard rocks, hip hop, RnB and blues and other captivating performances (Molinar). But the festival that is awaited with a lot of expectation is the Neon Desert Music Festival. So what is so captivating about the Neon Desert Music Festival that makes tens of thousands of feet pound
The sight of so many people of different backgrounds, interest and looks in one place contributing to the environment, makes this location all the better to learn about the diverse cultural music backgrounds. The stores in the general location include Frog and Firkins, Scented Leaf House and Lunge, Baskin-Robbins, Gentle Bens and many more stores that has different musical setting and many dissimilar people walking through their doors. As said before the music tends to fit the personality of the person but is not always the case. An example, my friend Serena has the personality of a wise, gentle person and would anyone. Her taste in music is more along the lines of softer music that gives her energy like Hello by Adele. On the other hand, my friend Alex has almost the same personality as Serena but a little more selfish at times enjoys hard core rap as his everyday music. So going along with thatI asked around at couple place to learn about how music influences personality and internal motions; one person was sitting at store that had a music that was playing Indian music, it seemed like he was enjoying it so I asked for the reason. I learned that his personality was self reserved and curious. His taste was not Indian music it self but the fact that they are playing it rather loudly and how they are not shamed for this different type of music. He told me that it is incredible how the new age moved on and that he can enjoyed culture difference in a lot of areas, it sparked the curiosity in his inner self. He was 24 with a major of Computer Science along with a minor in Math, the music loosely matched his
For our culture unit project, my family and I visited the Midori art museum and Samurai, a local Japanese restaurant. Both of these locations have provided plenty of information about the manifestation of the cultures they originated from. For example, the insides of Samurai and Midori had an unmissable Asian style and flair throughout the entire establishment. On the outside, Samurai takes on the appearance of a Japanese temple. Samurai and Midori have provided pleasant experiences, memories and people to chat with.
