Introduction
In this course, we were able to work with children at a field site of our choice. I chose to do my field hours at Oasis. Oasis is a wonderful program, and I truly enjoyed my time there. The children at Oasis taught me so much and what we learned in class really helped me further educate them. Many students that volunteered there were not education majors and often did not know how to handle situations with the children. Our course had us study education psychology. This helps deepen the understanding of how a child’s mind works, which is a truly valuable skill to have.

I did my field experience hours at Oasis Católico. They sponsor an after school program for children PreK to fourth grade. This after school program is located in Pinewood community. Being placed in an all Hispanic setting made me appreciate the diversity the community has to offer. I plan to continue to help diverse populations throughout my career and this was a great stepping stone to help prepare me. Far too often, teachers only teach in specific school district and experience no diversity. They are then sent into culture shock when/if they need to move districts. I want to be prepared to teach any type of student I may encounter. An article on them importance of student diversity states, “…you cannot teach what you do not know, and too often we expect teachers to be ‘multicultural competent people’ without helping them learn how” (Bates). I find this statement to be very accurate. Teachers will encounter students with all types of learning levels, races, religions and personalities. Teachers cannot be prepared for everything, but by participating in programs like this one they can gain more knowledge and experience more
Hi everyone, I am observing on Wednesdays from 8-10 and Fridays 3-4 in Cuesta Children’s Center Preschool 2. I believe a child’s environment can affect their mood, social skills, ability to learn, mental health, and physical health. These essential elements need to be meet or it will affect their adult lives. I feel the Cuesta Center does a remarkable job of offering all of these, and has wonderful transitions throughout the day. I enjoy observing the teachers modeling acceptable class room behaviors, asking open-ended questions while using descriptive language to help to expand children’s speech, and they were engaged in the children’s presents. Three ideas for teachers to support new immigrant students in a classroom will be images and games, friendly conversation, and the power of stories. When it comes to images and games, teachers should decorate their classroom or school walls with photos of diverse role models, including those of immigrants (Burnett, 2015). As a teacher, you should make sure your class is unique and comfortable for young students. When I become a teacher, I will make sure I decorate my class and make it colorful. Furthermore, I will have some type of diverse theme in my class so I can make all students feel welcome in my class and welcome by me. I learned that I will need to understand the issues facing my students inside and outside of the classroom. By having this understanding, I hope to be able to form real relationships with my students, make learning relevant to each student, and be able to provide the necessary support to make them successful learners. I want to be a resource and/or participant in my students’ life rather than just a spectator and/or teacher teaching about diversity. I realized that my previous perception would have left some students struggling in my classroom. I would have overlooked students’ needs if I only concentrated on teaching diversity in my classroom. I believe that this experience has made me grow as an educator and made me realize how I need to understand the complexities faced by my students in order for me to become successful in the classroom and to become an effective teacher.
I performed my field experience at Chiefland Elementary. Chiefland is a very small town with the population of six thousand. There are over eight hundred students enrolled at Chiefland Elementary. There are fifty-two instructional staff members and two administers. In those fifty-two staff members, there is one African American teacher and one male teacher; the rest are women. This is a white dominate school. In the school there is 73% Caucasian students, 17% African American students, and 4% Hispanic students. There is only 3% of students that are ESOL and 5% are Gifted and Talented. In addition to internships and supervised practice in the field, it is essential to acquire the ability to work with both troubled children as well as disabled children. I believe that volunteering at daycare centers as well as organizations that provide opportunities to assist disabled children, such as Children’s hospitals and charities. This semester I was enrolled in Education 2120 as well as 2130 which required a total of forty field hours at the placement site Oasis. I was hesitant going into the program as I was not quite sure what to expect. I was capable of acquiring the vast majority of my hours at Oasis; however, due to my work schedule and the hours of operation there I had to acquire the remaining few in an elementary school. I am thankful for my time spent this semester as it opened my eyes to what life in the classroom may be like and it also allowed me to interact with a culture I did not know much about. My findings can be useful to implement new social policies to create a more diverse educational classroom setting. In the beginning of the year, school administration may not focus on the racial diversity in a classroom when choosing classes, but I believe this should also be another factor when dividing students, to create an equal diverse classroom. While creating diverse classrooms will aid in the ethnic knowledge of children, organizing school-wide ethnic cultural celebrations can also help expand and introduce different cultures and ethnicities to children who may not otherwise be introduced to a different ethnicity and race, other than the ones they are surrounded with. In relation to personal experience, I grew up in a social setting where my ethnicity was the majority, but when I started college at Dominican University, I was sectored as a minority since most students were white, but I was not affected by this cultural shock as I had a close connection to my ethnic roots and did not let the change of environment affect me. Growing up in an environment where you are the majority, but then radically being introduced to an environment where you become the minority can easily affect the cognitive state of a person, if that person was not well-prepared
Before I went to Pathfinder Ranch, my sister told me all about it and how much fun it was. After my sister talked about it I could not wait to go and when i finally got to go it was over so fast. My experience at Pathfinder Ranch was amazing. I made so many good memories there .
I am so thankful to have been place at Easterling Primary for my field experience. The visits I made to the school helped confirm that Special Education was for me. As I was exploring the North Shore Elementary School (NSE) it dawned to me how truly divers the campus is. At NSE there are different ethnicities including African American, Hispanic, white, American Indian, and Asian. With students having such a rich and diverse cultures it is necessary that there are teachers present to help foster collaboration and community. There are also students with varying socio-economic status. Students also differ in the languages they use at home and school.
Tuesday began with my plodding from the bed to the shower with somewhat less than vigorous enthusiasm. Granted, mornings infrequently find me at my best, night more of the time when I commence to flourishing and shining. Nevertheless, I completed my morning constitutional, saw to my darling garden and set out once again to investigate Oasis Springs. In truth, I failed in my endeavors the day before and wished to correct my previous inadequate attempt.

Since I started this class, I have a learned a great deal about cultural diversity in the classroom and abroad. My perspective has changed slightly but my knowledge of this subject has improved. In my family, my father taught me about the civil rights movement and the evils of segregation in the U.S. My parents taught me to be tolerant of all humans, no matter what they look like, how they dress, or their sexual orientation. My family has always been liberal thinkers who taught me the dark history of racism and bigotry in this country. As an educator I would be accepting to all race, creeds, and religious peoples.
As I look back on my k-12 school experience and reflect on how I saw student diversity; I think that I was not aware of it as much as I am now about it. I do however, I do remember a few time that I did see it, for example in elementary school. I was in ESL and once a week I was pulled out to meet with my ESL teacher. I noticed that it was always the same small group of student being pulled out and so did the student in my class. I personally felt different from them, but at the end of the day I loved going. The reason why was because my teacher made us feel like individuals and let us share our culture with each other. I learned more about others’ diversity and culture in that small amount of time that I was with her then when I was with my actual teacher. Mrs. Mueller made us embrace our differences while still learning the lesson that we needed to go over.
Field experience is a big part of majoring or minoring in Individuals with Exceptionalities. For my Early Intervention class, we had to observe Early Intervention programs. For my other class, we had to observe a place of our choosing and I was told I could use that program for my 9 hours as well. The first program was Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit to observe the Work Foundations Program. The second program I observed was Danville Head Start.
