Everyone has their own style of writing. Many differ drastically, while others are extremely similar. Although my own writing could use numerous improvements, which I‘ve set as goals for this class, there are a few things that I’m partial to. When writing research essays, I aim to write about subjects that people generally don’t know about. Or I’ll choose a topic and write about facts that aren’t usually heard, which results in a considerably more interesting essay. In addition, I am able to condense all the research I obtain, rather than losing focus on the subject and getting side tracked with other details that don’t necessarily pertain to the subject. Distant, cold, and non-existent describes my relationship with writing. My relationship with writing has never been a close relationship. Writing has always been difficult for me. I have never hated writing, but it has been a constant challenge for me. I will be discussing my fears of writing, the value of being able to express your ideas through writing, and what excites me about writing more and more.
My writing experiences have been minimal. So far I have only learned the basics of writing, like forming sentences and forming sentences to put into paragraphs. I can tell that my writing has improved throughout the years. I hope to improve in writing essays, paragraphs, stories, and speeches so that I have no errors with editing and creating the final product. I predict that I will be a well rounded writer when I graduate from Newman University.
In my first “Who I am as a Writer” paper I stated how one of the areas that I needed to improve was writing. I went into more depth talking about how my writing is not descriptive enough and how I cannot grab the reader's attention. Even though I still need to continue making improvements, I have gotten better in both of these aspects. Compared to my papers in high school my introduction paragraphs have improved.
My writing has changed a lot throughout the year. Some of my first pieces included lots of redundancies, “th” words, and things that could be changed. In addition, the sentences were not as long as they could have been. These things were brought to my attention by reviewing my writing and using the writing goal sheet. Over the semester, I have learned these little mistakes separate lower level writing from higher level writing. Reviewing my old writing and writing instruction has recently been on my mind while I write essays. They help me to write to the best of my ability. The first sentence of my essay at the beginning of the year is, “I am thirteen years old and I am interested in building and designing things.” This sentence has redundancy
Throughout my writing process there are a various amount of steps I do to perfect it. Generally coming up with the idea is the most difficult part of any writing, even now, it is difficult to get started with the essay. Once I dive in though, it gets quite easier. Procrastination is a problem that i can not seem to shake. I will attempt to sit down, but as soon as the littlest thing pops up, I will usually be distracted and lose my train of thought. I attempt to run through the whole essay in my head before I start just to get a proper idea of how it will be structured.
Prior to entering class, I thought that I was a competent writer. However, I quickly learned that my writing was conversational and that I had little experience in academic writing. I became aware that much of my poor writing was like an old habit that I found humbling to admit and hard to correct. Passive voice, unneeded words, long sentences, were just a few of the obstacles that resulted in ineffectual writing. However, using peer reviews and an editing checklist I slowly began the journey to better writing. I also found that reading about writing provided supplementary methods to improve my writing. The first step of my writing process when I write a traditional essay consists of brainstorming. If a certain format is provided, I have to brainstorm the order of my key points. On the other hand, for some assignments I am given the specifics of what I need to talk about (like these Log Its) and even given subheadings which I must include to offer a professor better access and recognition of key parts. Once I begin to write, I never have in mind that what I write is a draft of any sort. Personally, I like to keep up with my grammar, spelling and punctuation as I go, so once I finish, the paper is pretty close to being finished with very few mistakes. Sometimes, I type a word that I doesn’t fit into the context but at that time, I have a couple of sentences in my had that I know will disappear if I don’t type them out, so I type (?) after the word to remember to find a synonym or change the word.
My writing style throughout junior year has changed drastically. With each essay my motivation to write better went down. I started to do the bare minimum with each essay. I did not do a rough draft or double check any of my work. My first essay I wanted to do a decent job so I can start the year off with a good start. I wrote very clearly and did what the prompt said. After that essay I did not care so much about what I had to do to get an A again. Yes, this is very irresponsible of me, but as the year went on I lost my drive to do better. I think as a writer I have gotten worse, because I did not write to my full potential.
Writing presents it’s own challenges to those who write books and articles daily; and to those who write less frequently. Getting around using punctuation, placing commas, and figuring out how to start an essay always seemed to be the biggest challenges for me. Through practice is the only way I’ve come to be masterful over my own writing style, even though there is always room for improvement. Because each time someone sits down to write a letter, article, or book; they are practicing their writing style and ultimately becoming better writers. Many people find writing to be a hassle or too cumbersome in a day in age of technology and the internet supplying information to the public so immediate, but everyone must overcome challenges that they
My writing style, in my opinion, is light-hearted and creative. I don't particularly like bland papers, regardless of the topic, so I tend to add in a bit of humor, if possible, and maybe even a bit of interesting facts. I always tend to wonder if someone else would understand my paper. I enjoy being able to put in a nice flow to my paper so that I'm not going from one topic directly to another. In all honesty, I enjoy other writing styles such as being objective, realistic, complex, and dramatic. My favorite that I try to go for, however, is a light-hearted style because I can have a bit of fun with it while following the designated guidelines.
I think what I struggled most with was the descriptive language, and vivid language to paint a picture for my audience. I thought writing in the past was going to be a piece of cake, but once I learned more rules when referring to the past in writing, I found myself worrying whether or not I used the right tense of transitional phrases and active verbs. Also I think trying to incorporate similes and metaphors were hard for me because I felt silly when adding these weird and odd phrases. Or perhaps it was just weird to me because my similes and metaphors didn’t seem so clever or at college level. I would say this paper stressed me out because I struggling adding the dialogue, and knowing whether or not I included it correctly
Doing the inventory exercise, I have learn that I have many style as a writer. According to inventory exercise I am a independent, pragmatic, verbal, rational, abstract style writer. The two ways I would like to improve myself as a writer by using more rational in verbal in my writing. Rational reply on facts and information, while verbal rely on language, usually written text, to acquire information. (successful college writing) By use more rational in verbal in some of the writing style in the exercise inventory, I am hoping that it will improve my writing skills.
Three sentences. That was all that my kindergarten teacher required me to write. “Class, your homework is to write at least three sentences about something that you enjoy,” she said, as she handed each of us a writing journal. Every night, the writing topic she assigned would change. Later on in the school year, my classmates and I would make up our own topics. We would use our imaginations to write whatever pleased us. I fell deeper and deeper in love with writing. Throughout elementary school, I read many different books. Each book had a different author with a different writing style for me to enjoy. I, too, developed my own writing style. By junior high, I had won a few writing awards, and I had written some short stories that I shared with my friends. Even as a freshman in high school, I still enjoy writing.
Today, I was given the worst news that I could have possibly been given at the age of 20, I cannot write. The feelings and emotions of disappointment and anger creepered into my head as my boss broke the news to me. While he was informing me of my needless word usage and horrific sentence structure, I thought, “Wow, previously before this very moment I was feeling ecstatic. I had been learning many things, more than I have learned during a week of college, and yet I fell short.” After crucially critiquing my skill level he had advised me to read “the elements of style.” After skimming through the first few pages, I knew that there was hope for me to become a better writer. The sound of Carmine’s snoring from across the hall forces its way through my closed door and into my room. It wakes me before my alarm this morning. I’m not sure what time he came in last night, but I must have been in a deep sleep. Slowly, I go through the motions of my morning routine. Taking care not to wake Carmine, I finish getting ready and leave him a note to tell him I’ll be at the library all day. Just as I finish checking my assignments and pack my book bag for the library, I hear my phone ping with a new text message.
