Personal Narrative: The Children's Identitity Theft

My grand mother had her identity stolen once. We found out the elderly are a common victim of identity theft. An entire year went by before she knew her identity was stolen and the only reason she found out was because she found out she was missing money from her account each month to the point that her mortgage payment was not being paid in full each month. She was under the impression the bank took care of everything, her husband was taking care of the finances but he passed away so everything started to unravel. Once she found out she owed the bank a lot of money toward her mortgage and was very behind on payments. She never found out who did it, had to get all new cards and numbers, and is still paying for it today.

My Mom was actually just recently a victim of identity theft, a couple weeks ago she got a call from her bank questioning some charges that had been made in New Jersey around the same times she had made charges in Toledo, where we live. Obviously my Mom told them they were fraudulent charges because she’s never been to New Jersey so the bank put a freeze on her account. They think someone had gotten her account number by putting a magnetic strip at a gas pump she had used somewhere. It took about a week for her to get everything straightened out, she had to cancel her card as well so it took 10 days for her to get a replacement..it was a big hassle.

Becoming the victim of identity theft is never something that is a pleasant experience. Along with the fear regarding the actual event, there is also the aftermath that must be considered. It can sometimes take years to completely see the full effects of identity theft, but by learning more about the different types, it is much easier to get started making repairs.

One reason identify theft is being a fast growing crime in the United State is because; more people credit card information is being stolen. Around 10% of American has fallen victims to credit card theft. Around 7% of Americans have been victim of debit or ATM fraud and 12% of the fraud was on internet websites and 10 % was on the telephone. When i was a kid i used to get in so much trouble my parents wanted to give up on me. I was in and out of juvenile. I was ignorant i didn't care about no ones feelings. One day i was sitting inside the house and my probation officer came over. My big brother was heading out the door when my mom told him do not get into any trouble. As soon as he went outside he got locked up. What happened was he was with a group of guys who robbed a lady but he was the only one who got caught. He was given 2 years in juvenile.

The most common depiction of identity theft is the robbery of personal information for someone else’s monetary gain. Based on a range of information gathered from public and private resources, “Approximately 15 million United States residents have their identities used fraudulently each year (Douglas).” Although literal identity theft can have substantial monetary consequences for its victims, figurative identity theft can have even greater ramifications for those that suffer from having their individuality, identity and self-confidence taken away from them.

Identity theft over the years has cost citizens and businesses millions of dollars each year just in the United States alone. It has also taken on different forms from true identity theft (false impersonation), to theft for financial gain, and to non-credit forms of identity theft. Identity theft does not necessarily have to cause monetary damage, but what it does do to a victim’s credit, medical history, citizenship, driving records, etc. can do possibly more damage. As the definition states, identity theft takes two processes. The first process is collection of information followed by fraudulent use of the information.

According to an identity theft agency website at http://www.consumer.gov/idtheft, throughout the history of the crime, federal agencies and government officials have made an effort to address the problem of identity theft. In October of 1998, Congress passed the Identity Theft and Assumption Deterrence Act of 1998 to address the problem. If anyone violates this act, they will be investigated by federal agencies such as the U.S. Secret Service, FBI, and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and, if possible, prosecuted by the U.S.
