Personal Narrative: What I Learned In My Communication Class

I was very skeptical about taking an 8 a.m. communication class as I am in no way a morning person, but it has not been as horrible of an experience as I expected it to be. I took a speech class during my senior year of high school which has greatly helped me in this class as many of the concepts covered in this human communication course are nearly identical to those I have already learned. While I would not go out of my way to give presentations or speeches, I am not afraid or nervous to give them because I am sure in my ability to adapt to different situations. I was taught the idea of self-fulfilling prophecy in high school and know firsthand the influence a positive/negative mindset can have. Hence, I am constantly trying to bolster my confidence in giving speeches without inflating my ego. Perhaps the most interesting and new concept I did learn in this class was the color code. I love talking to and getting to know others, but I find group work very tedious as there are always conflicting personalities and people unwilling to participate and contribute. I knew I needed to work on my listening skills, but I was hoping to do that with lectures and not with other people. At the end of the day, I prefer to do all the work myself because I can count on myself and know that my work will live up to my standards. When I was placed in a group of all boys, I was even more worried. In fact, I had already built up a slight dislike for the one boy in our group named Jacob from the very first day of class because he seemed to constantly talk and not listen to others. I was afraid they would not show up and hurt my grade, that they would not respond to emails or refuse to participate altogether, but I could not be more wrong. I could not be happier with my
