Personal Philosophy of Reading Evolution of mankind has progressed because of the ability to pass on knowledge from generation to generation. Reading is vital to the progression of each generation as it serves as the foundation for growth as an individual and for society as a whole. Reading encompasses both the political and cultural dimensions of the world in which we live in. Literacy has attempted to equalize the cultural limitations of low socio-economic students. In the past, reading was solely available to the upper-class. Now, this opportunity is available to all members of society. Today, all children are provided the same opportunities to excel as a reader. As a teacher, I believe that it is my responsibility to build a classroom that is conducive to learning, so students can become accomplished readers. As each child learns to read, it is important to consider the individual differences in each child’s learning style. I believe that every child is capable of learning to read and that environmental influences affect literacy success. My philosophy of reading is to develop a good reader who demonstrates clear and concise articulation of text, actively engages in reading content, and uses self-monitoring strategies for in-depth comprehension. The reader will be motivated and independent, explore different genres and select reading as a way to gain the knowledge and confidence to become a more productive member of society.
