The purpose of this memo is to evaluate my listening skills, assess my strengths and weaknesses, and describe how I can improve my skills. My listening self-assessment score of 36 indicates that, although my skill level is decent, I have room to improve significantly. I regularly attend professional meetings where either informational listening or critical listening is required. Despite this, I consider my listening skills subpar and am aware of my need for improvement. In understanding how I can improve, I must first assess my strengths and weaknesses.
My strengths include not interrupting the speaker, maintaining eye contact to show I am actively listening, and being able to think critically about complex topics. Not interrupting a speaker and maintaining eye contact are skills I acquired early in my career to display my engagement and respect for the speaker. Understanding complex topics is something I continually learn how to do. This is aided by conceptualizing detailed knowledge and constantly learning more in the areas related to my field. My main weaknesses are the following. I don’t paraphrase the message to ensure I comprehend it. Typically, halfway through a presentation or meeting I have already formed my judgements of the speaker and the content. Often, I become distracted by a single point mentioned and am unable to identify all of a speaker’s main points. Now that I have identified my primary weaknesses, I can begin to improve upon them by altering my
“My strengths was speech in general because I like to talk I know how to talk and hold a beneficial conversation my weakness was maybe the presentation of it all because maybe it was my first time presenting a portfolio sort of like a resume type situation” - Donetta Bess
My listening skills could be improved. I am sometimes too keen to ask questions when a person has not finished speaking and my need to plan and “put things into neat boxes” can feel imposing on people with different learning styles and very creative personalities. I also have a tendency to write extensive notes in meetings and 1-2-1’s in order not to miss anything and to record peoples responses correctly – this can, however, come across as my being disengaged from the conversation and “not taking on board what is said”.
Listening skill is a vital skill that everyone must obtain in order to succeed in any career field. According to Elmhost (2013), “Talking instead of listening can lead professionals to miss important information. One analysis of physician–patient interviews revealed that the more doctors talked, the more they got off track and failed to address concerns raised by the patients.” (p.61). All the listening styles in the textbook are all valuable and all of them are essential for developing and improving listening ability. There two types of listening styles that are very functional at a working environment which are critical listening and task-oriented listening and most people are using these styles every day at work. Critical listening is when
The direct purpose of this memo is to assess my listening abilities, and to describe my ideas of which to enhance them. After taking the listening assessment, I scored a 30-39%, indicating my need of improvement. Based off this score I identified my strengths to be listening carefully, asking questions, and empathizing with the speaker. My weaknesses are that I am easily distracted by both external and internal noise, and I have a difficult time keeping eye contact. My intentions are to explain my strategy to improve my skills given the information received from my assessment.
When reflecting on myself as a communicator I see that there is much strength and weaknesses, but each one of these makes me into the person I am. My strengths encourage me to reach for my goals and dreams; they also allow me to be able to reach out to people through my words and push me to be a better individual. Many of my weaknesses though can have a tendency to bring me down as a communicator, but they also show me how I can work on myself, what I need to do to get stronger, and push harder towards being the best communicator I can be. The strengths and weaknesses in my life regarding to communication do not only focus on talking through speech, it goes deep into my life and my daily activities. Myself as a communicator affects my basketball career, personal relationships, education, future, and my walk with God.
Unfortunately, my family cannot afford to pay for my education,However I plan to continue applying for financial assistance online , work part time, whether it's delivering pizza, helping clean up around the gym,or doing local yard work, also maintain a good academic standards, although I haven't had the best of grades years past, slowly but surely I will get on the right track. It is my hope to receive a sports scholarship playing football and hopefully getting accepted into EIU,within time it would benefit me greatly.
I am not a professional writer, but I am a writer with sufficient imagination and positive attitudes. Through last two-semester-writing training, I understand the basic requirements of academic writing, such as the format, the citation and so forth. However, there is still an extensive space for me to improve my skills in both reading and writing. As a reader, I enjoy appreciating masterpieces and I am good at thinking through reading, but sometimes either cultural shock or linguistic barriers limit my reading speed and reduce my interests.
At this moment, I work a full-time job and attending to Broward College for Registered Nurse, while living with my parents. I have been working for an Endocrinologist Doctor for three and a half years now. My family are extremely happy for me the fact that I’m trying so hard to complete my future goals and they are giving me guidance to go above and beyond. My home is in located in Sunrise, FL, I have lived here for twenty-five years of my life so far. Also, I just started in August of 2016 for the pre-requisite courses to be accepted in the Registered Nurse program. While employed with a full-time job, and attending to college it will take me up to four years to attain my pre-requisites. In fact, April of 2017, the doctor I work for will be
I think the self-assessment was a good idea for me as a student to reevaluate myself and time management for my classwork. I did not learn anything new about myself after completing the assessment; however it did make me compare the different areas to see what I need to focus on more. The statement “Even as you benefit from your strengths, spends time developing your weakest areas so they don’t get in the way of your dreams and desires” made me really think about making changes with myself. (Bethel University, p2).
My results after taking the o*net interest profile test I have found that my results lead to artistic, social and enterprising as my highest ones. When I read all three of them I mostly agree with the artistic and social portions. I've always had a big passion for art, when it comes to making something boring too great i find alot of intrest. When I think about doing anything art related I think about doing it as a side job, I don't think I would like it much as an everyday thing.
I am a good team member. I am very cooperative and helpful in times of need. I can develop and maintain good relationships with other team members. Knows and supports teammates’ work and deliverables. Helps teammates who need or ask for support or assistance.
Openness is described as being open to new experiences and having an “appreciation for art, emotion, adventure, unusual ideas, imagination, curiosity, and variety of experience” (Wikipedia, 2015). It is not surprising to me that this is my strongest trait and even explains why I have chosen to pursue my EHCM. I am at a point in my career where I am ready to take it the next level and I believe learning new skills and challenging myself will help me achieve my goal.
Listening is a skill that is not regularly taught in schools. Therefore, I found that analyzing my listening skills taught me a lot about myself that I did not know before. I kept track of my self-talk and inner voice, did a seven day mental review, did the HURIER listening profile, and assessed how I listened in different social situations and listening contexts and what listening contexts I experienced the most. I also learned about my strengths as a listener being understanding and interpreting. My weaknesses were hearing and remembering. Additionally, I created some listening goals that I would like to accomplish this term.
