Personal Statement: Why I Want To Go To College

Noted authors, Brandon Chambers, is quoted saying, “If you are going to fear anything fear success. Think about what you are doing and when you succeed what life you will have.” There are several different reasons why I could stay home, work and not go to college; I could go to work every day and make more money for the house, it’s easier, and I would be less stressed. Now, on the other hand there are many reasons why I should go to school; such as further my education, make my family proud, and make myself proud. Education is key. My parents have always taught me that whatever you learn stays with you for the rest of your life. College is my aspiration. I want to attend a four year university to maintain a better lifestyle. I love learning new things; it’s like an addiction and you just want to absorb more knowledge. I witness my parents arrive home everyday tired because all they desire is to give me a better life. They want me to succeed and I have just opened my eyes and realized life is harder than I thought. My parents want the best for me and I want the best for myself which means if I try my best I can achieve my goal into making it into a four year university and graduating.

I am in college because of several reasons. Neither of my parents went to college and they constantly remind me of how much they regret it. I would be the first person in my family to receive a college degree and that motivates me to continue my education. My dad is in the United State Air Force and he has transferred his Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits to me. Receiving the benefits gives me a large percentage off of my tuition and it also allows me to receive a check every month to help pay for housing. I have one goal for being in college and that is to finish. I have had many setbacks in my four years of college because of how many times I have transferred, but now all I can do is finish what I started.

People ask me why I'm going to college all the time. Or more specifically, why I'm starting so late. Most of my friends are graduating college this year, just as I'm starting my first year. Some tell me they loved it, and others tell me it's a complete waste of time and money. Not going to college has never been an option for me. My goal here is to get a bachelor's degree in computer programming, start my career, and better myself for my kids so they can have a better life and something to look up to.

Millions of students attend college every year in the United States (“Fast Facts”). Many of these students decide to go to college because it’s their own personal decision, but what kinds of factors actually influence this decision? In my personal decision to go to college, I was mainly influenced by family, my religion, means for education, and an interest in medicine. For me, family was one of the biggest influences in my deciding to go to college. Part of meeting the basic need for family is to socialize and protect your children (Henslin, 105).

I am attending college in order to better the life of myself and my family to come. I would like them to be able to have everything they need, without worrying about money. I am originally from New York, because of this I saw the way my single mother struggled to pay bills on time. We needed to keep our payments to a minimum due to how expensive rent, clothes, and food can be in the city. This motivated me to get a higher education in order to ensure I will have a successful career. I want to enjoy my job while not having to live paycheck to paycheck. This will enable me to make milestones as simplistic as possible to overcome.

I intend to pay for college through a combination of merit scholarships, financial aid, work study and family contribution. Thought I have not yet decided which college I will attend, each college that I was accepted to and am currently considering has provided me with varying merit scholarship/financial aid from $4,770 through $31,980. In addition to that aid, I will participate in a work study program at my college which will contribute approximately $3,000. Because my brother's ongoing medical costs are high, my parents contribution will be approximately $5,000. I intend to take out student loans for the remaining college costs.

The time has finally arrived, college. It’s been a whirl of emotions attending college from intimidation of not knowing exactly how college works or where my classes would be to an exciting anticipation to explore the city of Miami up close. I’m the first in my family to go to college and it is an honor. I’ve always imagined what college would be like and now that I’m here it’s has exceeded all my expectations. The reasons why I’m attending college are for my parents because I want them to see that their hard work was not in vain. Also, for my future family who I hope to provide for one day and lastly for myself because I want to pursue a higher education.

I am still trying to figure out is how I will pay for college and therefore am not sure what I need the my financial aid package to look like in order for me to be able to attend Lycoming. While I hope to collect the money I have earned from working during high school, I do not know if I will have access to this when I move out.

I would like to go to college because I believe that if I go to college I would expand my knowledge in the world and have a growth mindset. I believe that If I go to college I would have my options to do the things I never could do and have a better life and be well informed about many things. I would also make my parents proud and my entire family including myself because I have high expectations for myself to do good in school, but at times I have problems with my classes and I get confused and I have trouble talking to the teacher for help because i’m nervous or I can’t raise my hand for help because I’m shy that got a question wrong. Why am I in college? For the love of kids! While I have always loved being around kids, never would I have imagined my adult life would be centered on raising children and I would be attending college for that very reason. You see, when I was young, college was never really discussed in our family. Although my mother was the valedictorian when she graduated high school, she never attended college. My father attended classes when I was a child, however, never earned a degree. As it turned out school never was my forte; I did just the bare minimum to pass and graduate. However, a friend talked me into taking a college class my senior year, but with my parents living paycheck to paycheck the cost of classes were my responsibility, and I just didn’t have the drive to pursue my education any further. My dream was to continue working in the corporate world, marry and start a family.

Well to be honest, there is no easy way to explain why someone craves to go to college. I am wishing to be different excluding all the other essays you’ve read. We finally made it to college! Since we are living together, you should know a few things about me.

College has always been of my biggest dreams, like it is for any kid. We all want to make it big, and live a comfortable lifestyle, and be able to say that we succeeded at life. Why do you want to go to college? Professors that I found lacking. I found myself thinking, what did I do? Is this right for me? And most importantly why am I doing this to myself? Why do I want to go to college?
