In today’s society it is hard to for me to balance my personal scale between my personal briefs of, liberty and common good, and social justice within the public health. I am appalled because, I offered feel like the government has a way of shadowing my personal decisions. Centuries ago philosophers did not give much thought to problems in public health sector. Due to health and safety issues in society today have cause the government to have more oversight over my personal life. The purpose of this paper is to elaborate on my personal struggles with society as a whole. I like to think that I have control of every aspect of my life. I would like to believe that statement however, I know the statement is far from the truth. I personally believe that the government is gradually taking away my rights. On the other hand, some people think that the government isn’t taking away our human rights. Majority of the newer laws are in place to protect the rights of other people. In doing so the laws had to change to ensure the safety of all mankind.
Personal liberty

Unfortunately, I sometimes feel like the government is taking lead over my personal liberties. The public health care policies’ have been known to limit individual’s liberty for the sake of his or her own good. In order to accomplish this task the government uses different types of health methods to control individual(s) decisions in order to break someone from doing harmful things. For example, driving while under the influence of alcohol. Doing such an offense could lead you to jail time, and loss of your driving
There will always be a debate over what is considered fair healthcare in America. As long as there is no national healthcare system that is equal for everyone, there will be arguments over whether it is a right or a privilege. Research will show that healthcare is a basic right for every human being in the world, and that by having a national healthcare system in America, this right can be
With health risks on the rise, and people getting careless, a change needs to take place. Our society is built upon freedom, but in some cases that freedom needs to be restricted. A simple choice throughout someone's day can affect the health of everyone around them. Even though freedom is one of the most important things in life, the public health has a wide outcome that could affect the rest of the world. Public health should be put before freedom because it affects more than one person, determines the generations to come, and this is what laws are based upon..
The federal government shouldn’t telling us how to live our lives. The government is prohibiting us to text and drive, talk and drive, smoke around children. We as citizens need to learn to resolve these matters with guidelines not demands. We will never grow as a society if the government continues to put restrictions on our every movement. If one person makes an error and all of sudden there is law to make sure their error never happens again, we will have so many laws we will become puppets to the government. The way the laws are influencing our lives may cause this domino effect.
A man that goes by the name of “Paul Ryan” once stated, “We believe, as our founders did, that ‘the pursuit of happiness’ depends upon individual liberty; and individual liberty requires limited government’”. In fact, at the Constitutional Convention, in order to protect against giving the central government too much power, the delegates added the Bill of Rights to the Constitution in which these individual liberties are as stated in it . The Bill of Rights are the first ten amendments of the United States Constitution that guarantees legal and civil rights of the citizens. The Founders had high hopes of these individual liberties that were promised to the people. However, the government, which was supposed to have a limited power or say in this, has been attempting to compromise these liberties with sugar coated words such as they are doing this in the name of security or general welfare for the people by taking advantage of our desire for security.
The United States of America is known as a “free country,” which makes people think that they can do whatever they want. Freedom and Health are two principles that people desire in society. Society wants to balance both principles, but are impossible to meet. Although, society can’t please both sides, equally there are boundaries for both principles today. In addition, it is no doubt that health is more important than freedom which society should strive to achieve the greatest good for one. However, it is impossible for society to change one's freedom perspective towards the health of others unless it benefits one personally.
Has the balance between personal freedom and the government's responsibility to provide health and welfare of its citizens been eroded? The answer to that is No. Yes, there should be a balance between personal freedom and the government’s responsibility to provide health and welfare of its citizens. Personal freedom is one of the great perks of being an US citizen. The ability to choose for yourself and not have a dictatorship telling you what you can and cannot do is priceless. Yes, USA is a free country but if someone is requesting assistance from the government, like with any other entity, there are rules and regulations to follow. Times have changed amongst everything from types of food healthy for people to technology used to help cure diseases.
While I have not been directly involved in the work of PHM before, I have been involved in the health activism activities. From organising workshops on Mental Health & Stigma and Drug Abuse in local communities and schools to organising a conference on Zika to working in the UK Health Forum on the project on built environment, aimed to illustrate how people around the globe made their communities a healthier, happier place. I am currently pursuing degree in Global Health and aim to also obtain master’s in public administration and policy, as I always wanted to contribute to a change towards “a world in which a healthy life for all is a reality”,
Do you ever wonder what is happening to your freedom, and question why government is controlling more and more of your life, property and constitutional rights?
In public health policies, some measures might constitute minor violations of a person’s freedom, but bring about significant benefit for a large number of people, hence the need to balance freedoms with the community benefits (Krebes, 2008,8). The Department makes all reasonable efforts to limit the information disclosed to that minimally necessary to accomplish the intended purpose. (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,
If the government has proof or evidence of individuals who have a disease or infection which creates a potential public health risk, then the government should be able to deny certain civil liberties to an individual. In the case of the aid workers returning from Africa during the Ebola scare in 2014, the government had the right to quarantine those workers. The workers had been working in Africa with exposure to Ebola patients. These workers needed to be quarantined in order to stop potential spread of the deadly virus because the exposure rate was so significant. The workers knew they were being exposed to Ebola when they went to work with the patients and thus, should have expected
In Democracy in America, Alexis de Tocqueville’s memorable claim that there is an incredible tension between liberty and equality in America is certainly true. His secondary argument is equally justifiable—that Democratic nations, especially American, will grow to love equality more “ardently and enduringly” than liberty (Tocqueville, 202), and can be proved by observing current American political patterns and events.
America is the land of the free and the home of the brave, and all of our God given rights are preserved in the Constitution. With so many people reaching out, trying to make America a healthy country, it is inevitable that some will feel that their rights are being pushed to the side and violated. As a whole, America has become a very unhealthy country, and health activists believe that in order for America to stay on top, it’s citizens have to become more health conscious. As the conflict between freedom and health becomes more extreme, it will leave more and more people searching for answers. Some of the main conflicts between freedom and health are smoking, fossil fuel emissions, and gun safety. These are all rights given to citizens of
Within public health, the issue of paternalism has become a controversial topic. Broadly, paternalism is defined as the interference of a state or individual with a subordinate overpowering the will of the subordinate, claiming the subordinate will be better off (Dworkin, 2017). Autonomy is the right of an individual to be independent and govern himself. These polarizing terms have raised questions pertaining to the ethical rights of public health working in conjunction with the government to develop policies meant to create healthy conditions for the
Health and healthcare play a significant role in people’s lives. During the 18th and 19th centuries, there were many changes affecting people understanding about health. Hence, those changes such as "the social, political and intellectual conditions in which medicine as a system of thought and health- care practice was able to emerge" (Walsh, 2004: 35). There are some factors affecting health, moreover “health status is recognised as a good measure of health-related quality of life” (Bajekal, Goldblatt, 2006: 10). For the purpose of this essay, the issues in health and inequalities will be explored in relation to the biomedical model of health with a focus on the behaviour of individuals and provide a critical evaluation of the adequacy of
The aim of this report will be looking at people’s attitudes and personal responsibility to health and illness. It is hard to define health because there are many different explanations, The World Health Organisation describe health as ‘Not merely on absence of disease, but of complete physical, mental, spiritual, and social wellbeing’ (WHO, 2003). This suggests that health cannot be atomistic and that all parts of health should be considered. The report will also be looking at illness: Eisenberg suggests that ‘Illnesses are experiences of disvalued changes in states of being and social function: diseases are abnormalities in the structure and function of the body organs and systems’ (Eisenberg, 1977) and suggests that
