Walking into BSW Beauty in Mattapan or any other beauty supply store in the hood is like walking into another universe. Cheap ugly bright lipsticks grab your eye immediately. Bags of hair hang from the ceiling. There is abundant amount of ECO Styler gel, cheap gold jewelry, and every hair accessory known to any human. It is a home to many beautiful Brown women struggling to make themselves fit society's definition of beautiful in a world that does not pay them any mind. If you look past owners who often are not of the community, indiscreetly following customers around as if they are going to steal something, and the lasting effects of colonization that are hidden in the ingredients of the skin lightening lotions on the shelves of the skin care aisles, it is almost an Utopia, almost. And while it may not an Utopia, it is a home. It is the kind of magic that is the result of most hood creations. They tried to destroy us, but we still here. Scraping the dirt and grime from the bottoms of barrels and still making it look golden. Can you see, it's in our strides, and it's in our appearance. And our appearances the fashions that we wear, specifically feminine fashions have existed as a disruption of the politics of poverty that say that poor people can’t have nice things. Our fashions roar, making up for all the years that the world tried to take our voices. How fitting that people who society says are worth nothing are the people that are upholding themselves as royalty? This is
In this world that we are, we especially women always want to do our best to have
“Aleah, that is so ugly,” my friends exclaimed as I eagerly pulled out my brand new pants from their perfectly packaged shipping box. “But they’re Michael Kors!” I argued, as though it increased their appeal. The truth was, the price tag read $78.00, and they were completely see through. Within society, there are numerous people who spend thousands of dollars on designer clothing that is not considered attractive street fashion or good quality. Often, the reason clothing is priced highly is because it includes a logo to advertise the brand and proclaim that it is “the cool thing to wear” while pressuring surrounding people to buy from the same designer as an attempt to become cool as well.
The holidays are officially here, and some of us may have parties lined up to go to. Some of these might even be all-nighters, and no one wants to keep touching up their makeup all throughout the evening.
There are debates about whether or not beauty products are detrimental or beneficial to an individual's health. As a person that actually uses makeup I believe that too much of anything is harmful for you if it's misused, or not used within moderation. Presently as a cosmetology student the misuse of makeup can clog pores as well as produce acne. Also I am aware that certain brands of makeup create their makeup using led, which is supposed to improve the longevity of the makeup. Basically, the more led makeup contains, the longer it stays on. The constant action of led entering your bloodstream can produce life threatening results. Along with led some makeup producers create their makeup with substances such as carcinogens(substances that cause
A lesson that cannot be voiced enough is that no matter the experiences you have had in your life, you always deserve to be happy. This past year, I could not seem to convince myself of this fact because I was bullied. If you were like me in thinking of bullying as something from an early 2000s cartoon, and having thought that bullies were hoodie, cargo shorts, and Osiris sneaker wearing middle schoolers who were just “misunderstood,” I am here to tell you that it is not at all like that. Bullies are actually the worst portrayment of us as human beings. It seems as if the moment I stepped through the doors of high school, I lost all of the girls who were my so-called “friends.” They are the kind of people who come up to you after making no
“Be who you are not who the world wants you to be” (Unknown). Society constantly uses the phrase “Be yourself”, however at the same time indicates beauty standards such as body type; tall, skinny, incredibly tiny waist, light skin, the list seems everlasting. Cosmetic surgery, the surgical process of changing one’s physical appearance for cosmetic reasons, has become the solution for thousand of men and women seeking to reach society’s expectations. Nearly sixteen million cosmetic surgeries, most commonly known as plastic surgery, performed in 2016 in the U.S, claiming to help patient with their self-esteem and overall improvement to their future. Changing by the aspects of others and becoming someone else should not have a place in the twenty-first century, the danger, cost and personal impact of the rigorous medical procedures seem unacceptable. Having a low self-esteem and struggling with the different social beliefs of beauty aspects have other solutions rather than plastic surgery.
Beauty pageants have been around for a long time, but what is the purpose of it? The little Miss America started in the early 1900s. “Competitions 25 years ago really only required a party dress and a satin hair bow” (Fleishman par. 2). When beauty pageants first started out, parents use to spend so little on beauty pageants and the children wore little to to no makeup. Now, in the twenty first century, girls ages four to seventeen wears a full face of makeup and fancy little dresses, walking down a runaway getting judged whether or not they look good and if their posture is just right.Beauty pageants for young girls can make them feel like their worth depends on physical beauty and not on their character which is why beauty pageants should be discontinued because they make young girls feel emotionally empty and physically unattractive when they lose these beauty pageants.Parents are putting their young girls into something they can not comprehend and so the child is confused. Parents start their girls out when they are less than a year old, and they eventually start wearing makeup, using self tanner on their delicate skin, wearing fake eyelashes, fake hair pieces and even fake teeth just to get judged on stage.
Your child is the age between 1 month to 13 years old, they are dressed up in suits and dresses before they can even walk. They are judged on their appearance, personality, and everything they have. The children have to get a fake tan, fake eyelashes, wigs, and fake teeth to just complete half of their look. The other half to complete their look is a full face of makeup and dresses or suits that are over $600. To put the cherry on top you have to get a makeup artist and a pageant coach for the talent portion of the pageant. There are about 4 competition categories in each pageant. The cost of how they appear at the pageant is over $3,000 and to participate in a pageant is over $10,000. You are spending thousands of dollars on your children
Successful women have to fight against so much. Taking care of ourselves, chasing our dreams full force, finally getting to the top spot and then realizing that something’s missing. Too often, we build up the lives around us and forget that we didn’t make time to build a family. Now we begin to rush against the biological clock and other factors that come into play when you try to have a child at a later age. Infertility being one of them. A word that used to be considered ‘taboo’ has almost become, dare I say it a ‘hot topic’ in Hollywood. Something that women are no longer sweeping under the rugs or hiding in the closets. Celebs are being very open and honest with issues such as IVF, pregnancy, adoption, getting a surrogate mother and more.
We wake up every morning judging our appearance in the mirror before we even start off the day. We constantly say the words “I wish I was her” or “I hate how ugly I look”. We are so caught up in what we should look like rather then what makes us happy. They say image is everything, from the brand of clothing to the size of the clothes you wear. Diet pills are consumed daily and operations are always occurring. We live in a world of plastic where almost everything is fake but it’s “normal”. Magazines, tv shows, movies, etc. show women and men with perfect skin, perfect hair, perfect body. Toned bodies shaming society for not looking that way and putting ourselves down for not having that “perfect” body.
Most people would say that a person with a confident smile is a person people feel they can trust. They are drawn to that type of person. The sponsors of this scholarship can go a long way in giving a person the ability to have that confident smile.
People say looks aren’t everything, but the way someone looks reflects on how he or she is feeling on the inside. The appearance of a person can give clues to someone’s overall health. When someone is sick, he probably looks a little pale and has bags under his eyes from not getting enough rest. People typically think that nobody can tell how healthy or unhealthy they are, but there are multiple ways that it can show. Some examples include baggy eyes from not getting enough sleep, acne from possibly eating too much unhealthy food, or even hair loss caused by stress and worry. An attitude also reflects on the way a person feels on the inside. When a person is happy, they most likely feel well-rested, energized, and confident. If they’re grumpy, they probably didn’t land enough sleep or food. Have you ever heard of being hangry? It’s that irritable, awful temper people get as a result of hunger. Let me assure you that it is a very real situation. Just be careful of what you’re putting in your body.
Everyday women are abused by a spouse or a partner, resulting in homelessness or no place to go. The organization in south Texas, the women’s shelter, opened their doors to me in hopes that I might further my knowledge of abused women and even children. It was a challenging obstacle to face, but an eye-opening experience. Despite the emotional effect that working with the abused women might inflict, I learned how to handle the pressure of seemingly impossible situations.
It’s no secret that worldwide women have unreasonably high expectations set for them. Yet it seems as though for a few days of every month, that bar is lowered and we as women are allowed to kick our feet up, complain and do practically nothing but binge-eat chocolate without judgement thanks to our on and off again friend, Mother Nature. Yes, that’s right - we’ve become so desperate to escape from the standards set by us from society that our periods have become our only excuse to relax and not have everything together. However, recent advertising from the feminine hygiene company Always Infinity is swiftly taking away our much needed break by implying women shouldn’t be taken less seriously just because of their crimson waves. Quite frankly, this isn’t the case and I’m tired of seeing this agenda being pushed.
High school are the memorable years before adulthood, they are the years to experiment, stress over nothing, and just in general find yourself. But with each year that passes by you learn new lessons, new morals which helps you get one step closer to finding you. As cliche as that might sound it is our reality.
