In the television show Freak and Geeks, by Paul Feig, the protagonist, Lindsay gets caught up in a scandal of cheating when trying to help a classmate.
Cheating can be spotted from a mile away and happens more frequently than one would suspect. Lindsay being a straight-A student decides to tutor Daniel for his math test, so he doesn’t repeat a year. Little did she know, tutoring him was more difficult than she expected. Daniel ends up stealing the test for Lindsay to complete and tells her “I'm not gonna be hitting you up every time I have a math test”(Feig). Therefore, Lindsay tries to tell Daniel that if he actually tries he could do well on the test, but later on she ends up giving in to the pressure and helps Daniel cheat on the test. In comparison, I was cheated off of and it almost cost me my grade. Sharing answers for homework was considered cheating, but students thought of it as nothing. However, when someone takes credit for your work, you feel ripped off your hard work. At the time I didn’t realize the person cheated off of me until the teacher pulls me out and the student in the hallway to talk about why are answers were similar. In Mari Pearlman’s L.A. Times article, “ Cheating In School Reflects Basic Confusion in Society” (1999), she discusses cheating and its effect on students, both, while in school and later in life. Cheating has been around for a long time and now cheating’s grip on students is worsening. With the more often occurrence of cheating in schools, schools need to put their foot down and put a stop to cheating in order to lower the occurrence of cheating in the future. However, there are some that say cheating is not common anymore and is rarely spotted.

After reading “Stuyvesant Students Describe the How and the Why of Cheating” by Vivian Yee, I can wholeheartedly agree with the opinions and facts presented in the article. Why? The cheating described, whether light or serious, is prevalent in the schools that I have attended. The goal of attending a prestigious university and obtaining a prestigious job has led to a craze over grades, to the point where students describe the feeling as “...addictive, in a bad way, in a sick way” (Yee 20). Similarly, the craze over better grades has led to various actions of cheating such as plagiarism and copying of answers. One sunny morning Shawn and his friend Joe did the usual routine of going to school. It was a private school. They would get up take a shower, then they would get dressed. After they would get dressed, they would meet up in the town park and decide where they were going to get breakfast. Shawn said let's go to McDonalds so they went and got breakfast. After they ate, they would start on the two mile hike to school. On their way to school they would run, play tag, and just have fun because having fun at their school was prohibited.
White lies are the most commonly type of lies, but there are also lies to protect others, and lies to cause harm which are used less often. Teensagers lie when they feel like it and need to in a situation that is presented to them. Experts like Immanuel Kant explains that all lies are unjustified, whereas Randy Cohen and Bella DePaulo express their professional opinion that lying is usually justified. Lying to others is sometimes justified due to the fact that lies can harm relationships, protect others, and should be used in a life or death situation.

My head started to wander back to my high school days. In my sophomore year, I was bullied nearly every sing day by the stupid jocks. I started to hate myself so I decided to change my look. School discipline is to ensure that students and the campus staff are safe and peaceful. According to the U.S. Department of Education on Rethinking Discipline (2017), “Teachers and students deserve school environments that are safe, supportive, and conducive to teaching and learning.” The idea is to decrease bad behavior and school violence which will lead to fewer suspensions and expulsions. There are rules and limitations when it comes to student discipline; there are acts in which students can and must be disciplined. For examples, if a student quality’s for special needs some different guidelines protect them under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act’s (IDEA). Furthermore, the Education Code, Section 48900 was implied to discipline students who committed any wrongful doing such as attempting or threatening to physical harm another person. In the case f any wrongfulness, the student is forced to be disciplined by being suspended or expulsed from school.

This can be prevented by getting rid of tests, making class lectures more understable and fun, and also shortening the amount of homework students get.
