Persuasive Essay Against Animal Testing

With every new emerging disease and make up trend, hundreds and thousands of drugs are tested and evaluated before they are sold and used to ensure their safety in humans. Animal testing, also referred to as animal experimentation and animal research involves experimentation on animals such as mice, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters in labs to investigate the safety and efficiency of a variety of products ranging from medication to cosmetics and even understanding the physiology of the human body. However, with masses of animals killed each year for this purpose; this essay will aim to evaluate the necessity of animal testing as well the opposition to why animal testing should not be a part of our human nature.

100 million is the estimated number of animals that are killed or harmed every year by humans in the name of research. These animals are bred for testing. Animals in labs live very stressful and unnatural lives in confinement. We are biologically similar to those animals tested. While some people believe that is fine to do animal testing the truth is that it's not okay to test on animals because of the painful protocols they put animals through, the daily lives they live can kill them, More than 100 million animals are killed every year. Animal Testing has been a huge controversy in the past years. Some believe that testing is necessary in reaching medical breakthroughs to find cures for a majority of diseases. Unfortunately, animal testing leads to the suffering and death of millions of animals, and that's why most are against it. Many wonder, “How similar are our genes to an animal?” Luckily, not all products used today are tested on animals. Which comes to show that there are ways to avoid using animals for biomedical research and research for everyday products.

Animal Testing also known as Animal Experimentation is the use of non-human animals as test subjects in a variety of experiments aimed to acquire more knowledge about human diseases. Even thought rats seem very distant from us humans they share a lot of similar genetic and psychological features that can help us propel into higher level of understanding and save human lives.

This can show how unreliable it is and why it would not be good to use medicine that is not tested on humans. In America 106,000 people die from medical drugs (33 Reasons Why). This shows that more people in America trust this type of medication. Not only this but treatment tortures and kills animals, they can not only ruin human population but animal’s too.

Various studies have shown that animal experimentation often does not even help humans. Some even lead to harmful human reactions to the drugs being tested on animals. Yet we continue to use animal testing while other courses of action exist that do not involve harming an animal.

Almost every medicine that can be found in an average person’s medicine cabinet has been tested on an animal at one point or another. A government funded corporation called the Food and Drug Administration, abbreviated as the FDA, is in charge of making sure that all drugs, cosmetics, biological products, and more are efficient, secure, and safe for human usage. The FDA will not allow any drug to be released or sold to the human population if it has not first been tested on animals. In fact, when a drug is first created it is tested on animals before humans are even allowed to test the drug at clinical trial centers. U.S. Food and Drug administration declared that “currently, nine out of ten experimental drugs fail in clinical studies because we cannot accurately predict how they will behave in people based on laboratory and animal studies” (qtd. in "Experiments on Animals: Overview" n.d.).Therefore animal testing is not used in great number to advance knowledge but rather to find the “one-in-a-million” chance that it could help. The fact that animal research for scientific purposes cannot be directly implied to humans most of the time in it of itself brings controversy. This is because subjecting animals to harmful testing for human medical advancement with a great chance that the results cannot be used to achieve said advancement seems inhumane to many.

First reason to stop animal testing is because it wasteful.  More than 100 million animals suffer and die in the U.S every year due to chemical, drug, food and cosmetics tests, as well as in medical training exercises and curiosity-driven medical experiments at universities. Many of these experiments are required by the government such as by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Some government-mandated tests kill more than 2,000 animals every time they are conducted, yet not a single one of these animal tests has ever been formally proved to be relevant to or able to accurately predict human health effects. Through taxes, donations, and private funding, Americans have spent hundreds of billions of dollars on cancer research since 1971. However, 93% of drugs that were successful in animals failed in humans. A great amount of money, time, resources and animals’ lives have been put towards these experiments and have produced results far too disappointing.
