Autism. To some people it can be just a word, or a disorder. What Autism means to me, is being able to be closer to my little brother. My 7 year old brother has Autism and that doesn’t define him as a human being, his capabilities defines who he is. He is the reason why I am where I am today, a paraeducator that thrives to help kids in need. Being a paraeducator, our job is to help our students become more independent to prepare them for the real world after school. In order to get a student to be an independent person, is to use strategies. A few strategies I would use is how to properly use fidgets, what the social norm is and ways to improve, and the four questions for a structured task.

Autism is a form of neurodevelopment disorder in the autism spectrum disorders. It is characterized by impaired development in social interactions and communication, both verbal and non-verbal. There is an observed lack of spontaneous acts of communication; both receptive and expressed, as well as speech impairments. A person diagnosed with Autism will also show a limited range of activities and interests, as well as forming and maintain peer relationships. The individuals will display limited interests, which are often very focused and repetitive. He or she is likely to be very routine oriented and may show behavioral symptoms such as hyperactivity, impulsivity, aggressiveness, and self-injurious behaviors.

1 in 68 people in the US have autism, this includes 1 in 189 girls and 1 in 42 boys. Autism is a difference in perception; technically it’s a developmental disorder that is the result of a difference in brain chemicals. Scientists don’t know what causes autism or why it’s stayed in the human gene pool for so long. People with autism could have a wide variety of symptoms, but some of the most common characteristics are fixations on things they like, reliance on routines,and lack of social skills. Autism can be formally diagnosed at ages as young as 3. There is no medical test to diagnose autism, rather a trained professional in the psychology field will perform a developmental screening and a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation. When a child is diagnosed with autism, therapy is strongly recommended. The earlier treatment starts the better because certain aspects of the disorder can be lessened through therapy. Therapy helps the mind and the body, certain therapies can help rebuild your brain, so to speak.

Many would argue that medicines are needed to treat autism, that autism needs to be ended. There is always a better way.

Today, we are seeing a rising increase in the occurrence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children. What once used to be a rare disorder is now commonly recognized in the medical field as well as in the community. Not only is autism a health issue in itself, but many health issues come along with the disorder. Even though a child with Autism could be, and probably is, brilliant, they find themselves trapped inside. There is much speculation over whether or not vaccinations can lead to autism. Many people are concerned that autism may be linked to vaccines in the ingredients in them that children receive. Autism can be a devastating diagnosis for a parent to hear. It can change a lot of things in life as we know it. Most Autistic children have a hard time with large crowds of people and the noise that comes with it. They may get easily up set when there miss understood. They may experience a “meltdown” from this. A meltdown can be anything from screaming to hitting, to even throwing things. A child can also experience confusion. They can get confused easily if directions are not clear and precise. These are just some of the everyday struggles a child with autism can face. There are many more but, the question is, is medication the way to go about it or should we try to manage these things by avoiding triggers. Most parents, clinicians and other workers see medication to be a last resort (Cesaroni, 1995 ).

One in 68 kids are diagnosed with autism, and everyone should be aware of how many people are affected by this condition. I think that everyone should know about autism and try to help autistic kids because they usually can’t speak, it is hard for them to get a job, and there is no cure for autism.

If you look in the dictionary and flip to the definition “awkward’ you’ll probably find a picture of me. That statement you just read is obviously not true, but there is some truth to that statement. I am diagnosed with autism or Asperger Syndrome (or “special” as my old friends used to call me). I put “diagnosed” in quotations because I have been misdiagnosed quite a few times ADD ADHD psychosis you name it. And with that kind of treatment you know what I got in return? Pills lots of pills. Before drugging me up however there was a time when my teachers thought I was just an excitable kid running around, playing in the trees, playing tag, trying to escape and almost getting run over by cars, running through the halls (screaming without pants). Oh no something is wrong here. I honestly think that when they were hiring new teachers they had to pull them aside and advise them about that “gifted” kid with the big puffy hair who threw ice packs at other students. The teachers, even the principal (I liked him he had a ventriloquist dummy named Stanley), decided that after three years of dealing with me that they would put me in special care. I couldn’t blame them. I even had one-on-one classes with therapists and after a bunch of extensive research of finding toys in sand they decided that I needed a bunch of drugs and medication! I don’t remember if the pills worked or not but I do remember being very “out of it.”
