“Of the future, man knows least; yet, about this, he worries most.” This quote, by Ivan Panin, relates to all of mankind. For centuries, people have been worried about what’s next. Even today people wonder what will become of America. Will it turn into a utopia full of happiness like the one in Brave New World by Aldous Huxley? A society such as the one in Brave New World may be on the horizon because of rising divorce rates, drug and alcohol use, and advances in science.
The rising divorce rates in America are no secret, with 50% of children in America going through the divorce of their parents. There is a huge weight on these children’s shoulders, the weight of dragging their bags from one home to the other and seeing their parents barely

Michael Jackson is on the charts, “The Breakfast Club” just hit the theaters and home computers are on the rise. Now, fast forward to the present. The technology now makes the computers back then look useless. Take one more step into the future. Who are we to say that their will not be drugs with no side effects, scientifically modified fetuses, and everyday helicopters? Even today, most problems can be fixed with science. Depression, broken bones, and broken cars and all be fixed/improved by science. In the future, science will improve and will be able to fix many other things. Another scientific improvement in Brave New World, are the feelies. “‘Going to the Feelies this evening, Henry?’ enquired the Assistant Predestinator. ‘I hear the new one at the Alhambra is first-rate. There's a love scene on a bearskin rug; they say it's marvellous. Every hair of the bear reproduced. The most amazing tactual effects.’” (3.23). In today’s world, 4-D animation is the closest we have to the feelies. An example of 4-D could be when if there are bubbles in a scene, there are real life bubbles in the theater. With every step into a more modern, scientific world, we take a step into the world of Brave New
Every year, over 1 million American children suffer die to their parents’ divorce (“Causes”). However, not all children are affected negatively from their parents divorce. In some cases, children see it as two bedrooms, two allowances, and two vacations. In other cases, however, children become depressed, have nervous breakdowns, and/or turn to drugs or bad things. Support from parents and a healthy home is very important in a child’s life.
In Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, a new society is created to secure happiness for all the people living in it. By doing this, they sacrifice truth, choice, family, science, and art. The government provides them with everything they need to be happy in life because they agreed to give up complete control of their lives. If I were given the choice, I would live in the world we live in now rather than the Brave New World. Like John, a “Savage” born outside the world and then brought into it, I think, “Well, I’d rather be unhappy than have the sort of false, lying happiness you were having here” (Huxley 179). Even though there would be times when I am uncomfortable, unhappy, in pain, even though I would have to experience loss and disappointment, at least I would be living a full life full of emotion and some purpose.
The statistics for divorce in the 1990's suggest that nearly sixty percent of marriages end in divorce. Given this startling figure, the assumption can be made that many children will experience some effects caused by the life-changing event called divorce. What is it exactly about divorce that causes negative consequences for these children? In what ways will these children be effected? Will these effects show outwardly? I will attempt to uncover some of the complexities surrounding these psychological questions in the following text. The unsettling fact is: young children of divorced parents face great psychological challenges due to the environmental conditions and changes associated with divorce (Wolchik and Karoly 45).
The struggle and debate for and about utopias has been going on for thousands of years. In the classic book, Brave New World, the author, Aldous Huxley, explores the aspects of happiness and stability through creating a utopia of his own. Of course, the civilization that he writes about is imperfect in many ways and the story follows an outcast in the society. In the book, Huxley shows us that true universal happiness is unattainable because to live a happy and fulfilled life with a true emotional range of feelings, essentially what it means to be human, people need to have freedom and thought. But in order to have a utopia with never ending happiness, people need stability and control. This makes a utopia an impossible
Huxley's work, Brave New World, is a book about a society that is in the future. This book contains many strange things that are generally unheard of today. Yet we see that some of the ideas that are presented in this book were already present in the 20th century. The idea of having one superior race of people can easily be seen as something that Hitler was trying to accomplish during the Holocaust. Huxley presents the society in his book as being a greater civilization. A totalitarian type of leadership is also presented in his book. According to him, this would be the best and most effective type of government. Hitler also thought that a totalitarian government was best. We see several similarities between Hitler's Germany and Huxley's
We’re all thrown off of our feet, shocked every now and then. John stuns this “Brave New World” that really isn’t that brave or new, at least compared to himself. A man with all sorts of ideas and morals in his head. He throws the “civil” society into chaos, trying to preach and practice, what to him, is correct. A love of, who? A man called Shakespeare? That’s where we’ll start.
Aldous Huxley wisely inserts many instances of distortion to the elements in Brave New World to successfully caution the world about its growing interest in technology.
In many cases when you read a novel you may find comparisons between the "fictional" society and your realistic one. The author may consciously or unconsciously create similarities between these two worlds. The novelist can foresee the future and write according to this vision. In Brave New World, Adlous Huxley envisions the future of our society and the dangerous direction it is headed in.
Imagine the world in which everyone is happy, there is no pain or suffering, no fear of death, no sadness, everything is good, and the government doles out happy pills, known as Soma, the perfect drug. That society has been created in Aldous Huxley’s novel “Brave New World.” Is everyone truly happy? What do the citizens give up in exchange for living in this utopia and is it worth it? "Brave New World" was published in 1932. Set in a dystopian London six hundred years into the future, the novel follows future citizens through their brave new world. The fact that it was written seventy years ago and so much of it rings true in our world makes it a novel that is captivating. Huxley's story is compelling and terrifying at the same time. It
Is it better to be happy or free? 1932, Aldous Huxley wrote about an idea of what the future might look like in six hundred years. Is in it crazy how the things that are going on in his fictional book, can be related to what’s going on now in our society. Allot of things that are going on today, Aldous Huxley wrote in his book. For example the Obama care R.F.I.D microchip implant is a chip used in humans as big as a grain of rice that goes in the hand. The implantation of an R.F.I.D chip in all Citizens by a certain date and the chip allows the government to all your personal information and the rumor is that they’ll even be able to control your income. In brave new world they have a conditioning center the year is A.F (After Ford) Human beings no longer produce living offspring instead, surgically removed ovaries produce ova that are fertilized in artificial receptors and Incubanated in designed bottles (Chapter 1). Aldous Huxley Brave New World where the society is trying to create a perfect community where everyone is happy but by taking soma, basically there being controlled there being conditioned to do and want the things there supposed to, Mustapha Mond, one of the ten World Controllers he focuses on the State’s successful efforts to remove strong emotions, desires, and human relationships from society, According to what role you’re going to play in the society whether you’re going to a delta minus or an alpha plus, they condition to belong to one of five castes
Back in the 1930's when "Brave New World" was published, no body dreamt that world of science fiction would ever come into reality. Surely there must have been a time though when a machine that could wash clothes too, seemed like science fiction. That machine has come into reality though. With today's technology and already seeing how far we've advanced scientifically, who's to say we
In the last two decades divorce has increased substantially leaving couples single and families broken. Divorce is the reality for many families as there is an increase in divorce rates, cohabitation rates, and the number of children raised in step and single marital families. Divorce cannot be overlooked as it negatively affects and impacts youngsters for the rest of their lives. Although it is the decision between two parents’s children are hurt the most in the process. The concept of divorce is extremely difficult for children to understand as there are many unanswered questions and uncertainties. “Will my mom or dad remarry and who will I live with?” are concerns children express while going through divorce. Many
Each and every day a child somewhere in the world is experiencing major changes within their family. One of those major changes is divorce or separation of parents. Divorce is “the action or an instance of legally dissolving a marriage”(Webster, 2011 p1). Today’s reality shows that couples only have one in two odds of remaining together. “ The U.S. Census bureau – involved in research about counseling children of divorce- estimating that approximately 50% of all American children born in 1982 lived in a single-parent homes sometime during their first 18 years. Mostly are due to divorce”(Children of Divorce, 2008 p.1). The rapid increase in divorce rates is a factor that has contributed to the large decline of the typical family. “Over 1
In the last 25 years, divorce has become a major issue in American society. Since the turn of the century, the divorce rate has held steady between 4.0-3.2 divorces per 1000 people per year (National Vital Statistics System, 2015). With this rising divorce rate, more children are living between parents, or in single family homes, and many of these children have been exposed to altercations between parents, as well as rough custody battles and divorce settlements. Traumatic experiences like these are highly likely to stick with children of divorce throughout their life, especially if the child is older at the time of the divorce.
Divorce is a plague that is destroying numerous families across the United States of America. Sadly, when husbands and wives divorce, the children are often caught directly in the middle. Throughout the years divorce has been becoming more and more common. In the 1920's it was a rare find to know a person whom had been divorced, today it is a rarity not to know of one who has been, or will be divorced. Divorce has numerous effects on the structures of families, and many devastating effects on the children that must experience it, although sometimes necessary, divorce radically changes the lives of adolescents and adults alike.
