Conformity, it’s something everyone deals with even if they do not realize it. Although, what happens when conformity takes control over everything? What if the world was stripped of individuality, no citizen has any rights to hold on to, while not being able to think for one’s self. That is an image what it would be like if everyone in the world were to conform to a restricting society. Just think of all of the advances in technology the human race has come up with in the last ten years alone. None of that would have been possible in a society where no one can go above another person's IQ level. This is the world the characters in Ayn Rand’s novella Anthem live in. The reasons that total conformity is dangerous is because individuality is not possible, no family history, and advancement would not be possible.
“‘We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, indivisible and forever’”(19). No one can be an individual, or at least that is what the government tries to convince the citizens in Anthem. If someone is not serving the whole society what would be their purpose in living? For in a society like the one in Anthem because that would be a transgression. Although the reality is that no should have to live in a world where they cannot be different from their neighbor or a random person they stand next to in line. ‘We strive to be like all our brother men, for all men must be alike’(19). This is an example of what this society thought
Society today makes everyone want to fit in. The shoes, the hair, the technology, and the clothes. With J.O.C., a new popular teen clothing line, fitting in can be easy. Here’s how we do it…

In Anthem the Council wants everyone to be exactly the same with no individuality. The Council enslaves everyone physically and mentally. This makes everyone feel like everyone is the same and no one has a different life than anyone else around them. On page 19, it says “ We are one in all and all in one. There are no men, but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever.” The Council’s plan for that is to brainwash the society to think they live in a perfect world where whatever choice the Council makes is fair.
The novel Anthem is all about a collectivist society. Equality 7-2521 breaks outside of the collectivist barriers and starts to think and do things for himself. He discovers living without individuality is not really living, it’s controlling one’s life. In this society, no one knows anything about egoism or does anything for themselves. “We are nothing. Mankind is all. By the grace of our brothers are we allowed our lives. We exist through, by and for our brothers who are the State. Amen.” (pg. 21) This quote is the exact opposite of egoism, it states mankind lives for each other and not for themselves. Towards the end of the book, Equality 7-2521 leaves the town and moves to the
Anthem depicts a dystopian society in which everything is for the community, and no actions should be committed for self. Equality has a curse. He has selfish thoughts and commits transgressions frequently. Equality does not think for his brothers or sisters in the way that is “normal”. The society that controls the city where Equality lives believes they have congruity within the community and demands blind obedience to their morals and values. In the beginning of Anthem, Equality at first follows the rules of the society and presumes their morals are free of error, but eventually begins to realize that the society is depriving people the freedom of individuality.
In this quote not a single person means anything but that they are part of mankind. The only people with any rights of their own is the government. Just like in our society the government controls what happening but at least in our society we have a say in what the government should and should not do. The characters in Anthem are nothing but mindless bodies that are controlled by the society. Also the people in Anthem are disposable so what 's the point in making them unique if they don 't matter at all.
Anthem is a novella written by Ayn Rand that takes place in a totalitarian society where all of the citizens are virtually the same. In the beginning of the book, Equality 7-2521 did not know how bad this government actually was. The society that he lived in did not accept individualistic values, they were based on collectivism. Towards the end, Equality became very critical of the world he was living in. He is correct in doing so, he has his own moral values.
The theme for Anthem is Individuality vs. collectivism. Collectivism is Practice or a principle given a group or a priority over each individual in it. “My happiness needs no higher aim to vindicate it. My happiness is not the means to any end. It is the end.” (Rand 95) Which indicates that Equality7-2521 begins to realize that it is important to be an individual. “Neither am I the means to any end others may wish to accomplish. I am not a tool for their use, servant of their needs, and sacrifice on their altars.”(Rand 95) Equality 7-2521 is stating that if you’re an individual no one can be taken advantage
The contents of this assignment will include multiple psychological theories to explain what ways an individual’s behaviour changes when he/she is part of a group. These theories will define social influence, conformity procedures within groups and social cognition, including the self-categorisation theory. Social groups are used in everyday living to represent beliefs, to work, play and to socialise. Groups can have a negative effect on an individual. Not been part of a group due to exclusion or stereotyping can create a negative effect.
“I don’t believe we were put here with all of our differences to conform to a uniform state of mind” ~Sonya Teclat. Conformity is when people change to act the same as other people in their society. The government, media, and social groups are a big part of the society. These things encourage people to conform. One of the books that have people conforming is Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson. In Among the Hidden Jen, one of the characters is very outgoing and brave. Luke another character is very shy, once he meets Jen he conforms to be brave like her. In addition, society encourages conformity through government, media, and social groups.
When large scale conformity is taken too far it can be harmful to the citizens and the society by the way others act and talk. One example is shown in the novella is when Equality says, “ [t]here are Fraternity 2-5503, a quiet boy with wise, kind eyes, who cry suddenly, without reason, in the midst of day or night” (47). The quote shows that Fraternity 2-5503 cries all of the time without reason. When Fraternity cries this quote is telling the readers that he knows that there is something wrong in the society, but is too afraid to express it. In Anthem, citizens cannot tell others how they feel, and if they do, they are breaking the law. In Anthem, Fraternity has to suppress everything which is what is leading to the random out bursts. Another aspect of society that is alarming is when Equality says “[t]here are Solidarity 9-6347, who are a bright youth, without fear in the day, but they scream in their sleep, and they scream ‘Help us! Help us!’” (47.) Solidarity shows us another way that conformity is not a good concept through his actions. When he says “Help us! Help us!” this is showing that there is something wrong and he can't express it in any other way than subconsciously. When Solidarity is yelling in his sleep, he is showing the reader that he fighting an internal battle and needs an outlet
People are continually being influenced and moulded by the immediate world, through different forms. These forms are developed through a singular perception and attitude towards life. This makes it complicated because people naturally influence others with their own views that makes it hard to retain individualism with in society. I’ve grown up with being pressured by people, the media and my surroundings to be a “copy” of someone and or something else. However I never conformed and are continually fighting for my own individuality that creates my own identity. I’ve portrayed this subjectively throughout my three paper cut sculptures “Fighting Conformity”.
“Your assignment is to write a persuasive essay and present it to the class in a week. You will be graded based on how convincing it is. Today we will be choosing topics,” announced Mr. Bowerbank, my 7th grade English teacher and ruler of classroom 110. My class simultaneously groaned at the prospect of work. I simply lifted my head with intrigue as it was already May and about time we had our first essay. He then proceeded to give examples of topics we could choose and gave us some time to think before we had to tell him our topic. My classmates were already rushing to tell the teacher their idea lest someone else steal it. That meant the usual abortion, death penalty, or drug use topics were out. I really couldn't think of anything and the teacher was slowly making his way through the remaining students like an executioner beheading criminals in a line. I have always thought that he would make a marvelous supervillain if he had a curly mustache, a tophat, and a cape. Eventually my name was called. I slowly dragged myself over to his desk. Even sitting down, he still seemed to tower over me. “What is your topic Cindy?” As usual in such desperate times, my mind turned to food. “Waffles are better than pancakes.” I figured that a waffle was just a differently shaped pancake with a nicer texture. “Hmm. Excellent topic. I look forward to your essay!” I survived to live yet another day.
Why spend money that is really needed for other things? Why live uncomfortably? Why be trapped in this hole called a home that belongs to another person? Why not live free and peacefully? When a person rents he or she usually throws away money that could be used to purchase something that belongs to them. Money is not easy to come by so why pay out hundreds toward something that is not benefit to the person paying it out. There is no good explanation for making a decision like this. The best option in a situation like this is to buy a house. Buying a house is a better option than renting an apartment.
Having escaped rule from a tyrannical British government, the United States was founded on ideals of freedom and equality for all people. These fantasies of universal egalitarianism turned out to be merely that: fantasies. American history is full of stories of the oppressed struggling to get the rights they deserve and of the controversy over these issues that consequently ensues. “The Hypocrisy of American Slavery” by Frederick Douglass and “We Shall Overcome” by Lyndon B. Johnson are two speeches made confronting two of these issues. Douglass’s speech, delivered in 1852, condemns the institution of slavery and maintains that slaves are men and are therefore entitled to freedom. Johnson’s speech, on the other hand, was written in 1965 and discussed the civil rights movement. In it, he implored local governments to allow all American citizens, regardless of race, to vote. Despite the significant gap in time between these two addresses, both speakers use similar persuasive techniques, including ethos, pathos, and parallelism, to convince their audience that change needs to be implemented in America.
