Over the recents years, there have been many arguments about the issue of gun control at the state and national level. In California, there have been a variety of enacted laws within recent years to address the issue of growing gun violence around the country and ways to prevent terrorist attacks. California 's new enacted laws about gun control in the state range from abolishing certain features on weapons to restricting certain handguns or other firearms a person might buy. The legislative branch within California wrote bills including a ban on large capacity ammunition magazines and were approved by Governor Jerry Brown and the Legislature in response to a 2015 terrorist shooting in San Bernardino. The hysteria developed when …show more content…
Assault rifles are social artifacts within the community. Gun owners attach subjective means to their firearms and represents who they are. By California legislators officials to call gun owners ' assault rifles and its certain features "evil", reflects the person owning it as if he or she was evil themselves and that he or she maybe future threat to the safety of California. The new law will also require assault rifles to be registered before January 1st, 2018, or be forced to turn them into local law enforcement for destruction or removal from the State. If assault rifle owners fail register their rifles that contain "evil" features will result in a felony or some cases a felony wobbler. This is another aspect that makes it social policy because it not only includes the welfare of gun owners, but includes the criminal justice system. Knowing this, even more reinforces the idea that assault rifle owners are being negatively stigmatized. The reason being is the harsh sentencing of a felony towards not registering your rifle with "evil" features on it. When most people think of felony charges, people are most likely perceiving violent offenders like robbers, rapist, murders, and many more offenses that have a severe threat to our society. The fact that if you don 't register your assault rifle you will be put into this socially negative category of not only being a felon, but being
Many people around the United States are victims of shootings, whether they be school shootings, mass shootings, or Terrorist Attacks. There seem to be two common ideas either support or oppose gun control. In the United States, many gun control supporters believe that guns are the reason mass shootings happen while gun control opponents believe that people are the cause of mass shootings. But they both want the people in the United States to be safe, whether that is from government tyranny, mass shootings, gun violence, or mental health.
According to Nicholas Kristof’s article “our blind spot about guns” gun control is a lot like cars regulation such that if we can regulate cars we can regulate guns. It took a lot of time and effort but thanks to regulations cars are safer than they were many years ago, and the same is very possible with guns. We need to keep our country safe. The first steps to gun control are improving on background checks and also requiring trigger locks on all guns.
California passed some of the nation’s toughest gun laws over the past two decades, and gun deaths across the state have declined by more than half, according to a new study by a California-based nonprofit research group.
With gun related crimes steadily increasing, the spotlight has been on a solution to cease firearm problems. Firearms have been around for hundreds of years, and they are included in self-defense, sport, show, and unfortunately crime. The danger of the situation immediately escalades when there is a firearm involved. A plan to fix these issues has been talked about and looked at throughout the recent years, but there are many different aspects you have to look at when trying to find a solution for this problem. However, not all gun related situations are at fault, for most people follow the law, using and collecting the guns for sporting, collecting, and self-defense purposes. The second amendment in the constitution gives citizens of the United states the right to bear arms. Areas of concern that can be focused on to prevent future danger in firearm situations are gun control laws, process undergone
California gun control laws are not focus on the overall wellbeing of the public. This current law encourage the people who are commenting crimes. Most legal buyers are prejudged as a potential threat; prior to purchasing a gun, rather than on their proper paperwork and qualifications. During this process criminals are still obtaining weapons illegally and using them. The laws which prevent personal protection with a gun most be changed in order to control and deter the increasing threat from predators.
The first legislative attempt of gun control was in 1934; it started the fight between the National Rifle Association, who believed it was unfair to the law abiding citizens to limit their rights, and lawmakers wanting to limit the amount of crimes. The debate has grown and changed immensely t over the years, but the issue is still there (Magoon). This year in Colorado, Senator Vicki Marble, Representative Stephen Humphrey, and Representative Lori Saine have been the Prime Sponsors for the repeal of the ban of possession and sales of large capacity magazines (Repeal Ammunition Magazine Prohibition). This is known as Senate Bill 17-007; it states that part 3 of article 12 of title 18 of The Colorado Revised Statutes should be repealed and adds a safety clause stating that it needs to be implemented for the “public peace, health, and safety” (Concerning the Repeal of Certain Provisions Concerning Ammunition Magazines). Large Capacity Magazines (LCMs) are generally defined as holding ten rounds or higher, but in the case for Colorado it is defined as holding 15 rounds or higher (Large Capacity Magazines). SB17-007 was introduced January 11, passed through the Senate but was indefinitely postponed by the House as of March 22 (“Repeal Ammunition Magazine Prohibition - SB 17-007”). Senate Bill 17-007 will repeal the ban on large firearm magazines; it should be passed because the prohibition has not shown any decrease of deaths in mass shootings and infringes on America’s second amendment right.
In 1994, Congress passed a 10 year ban on the manufacturing and sale of assault weapons that held more than 10 rounds of ammunition (Doeden). In 2004, the ban expired, allowing assault weapon or firearm to be purchase as long as the gun store received permission from the FBI or its state counterpart. Permission to purchase is denied for felons, those convicted of domestic violence, mentally ill patients, and alcoholics. However, the law doesn't cover private gun sellers and those who sale at gun shows and flea markets. Gun laws need to hold gun sellers more accountable of who they are selling guns to. Sellers need to also be required to make sure they are transferring guns to law abiding citizens who are mentally competent.
With being at the heels of the Vegas mass shooting, the deadliest mass shooting in United States history, anti-gun advocates are out in full force. Being a gun owner myself, I am worried that my guns for hunting and self-defense are in jeopardy. The implementation of the controversial gun control concept has been casually taken part in a numerous amount of political debates throughout the course of time. If this act is potentially taken to action in the United States, it will stir up a large dispute as it will take away the whole concept of the Second Amendment allowing the right of the people to keep and bear arms. With attempts to achieve the vision of a gun-free America by appealing the emotions of a hurting nation, society seems to be
Lately, there has been a controversy about gun control due to an increase is gun crime. With all the crimes throughout the years, many people don't know if we should have more laws for firearms or no more than what we have now. Within the last year, there has been about 53,000 incidents alone, but the year before was about 52,000 so not much of a difference of the two years. With mass shooting between the years 2014-2015 here is the only difference of eighty that had occurred and been reported, but yet with the accidental shootings, they are about equal with 2,000 that were reported (Past summary ledgers). The number of deaths that happened in 2015 was around 13,000 and in 2014, it was 1,000 less than that within the year gap. The new laws not only affect the people who oppose firearms but
You and your family are eating out at a restaurant when you see someone sitting at a table with a holstered pistol that they most likely have registered. How would you feel about this? Gun control can be a law or laws that are set that restrict some types of firearms. My claim is that gun control is not needed and won’t help decrease gun crimes.
Currently in the United States, people are ten times more likely to be killed by a gun compared to other countries (CBS). Given recent circumstances, it’s obvious that reform is desperately necessary to improve the overall security of our communities. As a senior at Aberdeen High School, it is crucial that we work together to relocate our energy to improving general security. Although there are regulations in place on owning a gun, the enforcement of it is highly neglected. 65% of juvenile offenders have access to at least three illegal firearms (Gun Laws), and if there were tighter policies and increased security of how these weapons were being distributed, that number could potentially decrease. In order to eradicate gun related violence,
Over the past two decades, gun control has raised controversy upon the American people and changed the way people foresee firearms. Most of these controversies still continue to be brought up today. The Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights states that “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. (Brooks np).” In January of 2016, Obama stated his gun control plan that would more strictly enforce existing laws including firearms (Smith np). People deserve the right to have firearms for the ability to protect, defend, and entertain themselves and others. The biggest controversy, including firearms is the way people are introduced and informed about them. People are given the thought that “guns kill people,” when in all reality, “people kill people.” Although there are around 10,000 people killed in the United States each year from firearms, guns are not the main conflict in the killings, the people behind the guns are (Brooks np).
The modern world is and extremely diverse place. Together with the process of globalization, the society has met the increasing amount of problems in social, economic, political and cultural aspects, which appeared to be the other side of all the benefits of the mentioned process. First of all, the globalization has led to the standardization assimilation of cultures as well as trends in lawmaking and juridical processes. First of all, it could be notable in the activity of international organizations, which recommend the countries to proceed with some legal initiatives, which would be beneficial for the world. However, there are still some issues, which can not be solved either on the international or the national level. One of the most notable problems, which was described above is the question of gun usage for individuals. The thoughts about this option are diverse in the society. Some people claim that free access to guns is the key to democracy and total freedom and would decrease the number of committed crimes drastically. At the same time, their opponents state that if people have access to guns, the world will become a total disaster with blood and violence all around the street. There are also less radical thoughts about the issue. To understand all the aspects of the problem and define whether the freedom of gun usage is appropriate it is necessary to conduct research on this topic.
A high caliber mechanism that could send a projectile shredding through the flesh and bone of anybody standing in its path sounds like a blood curtling tool that should never make it into the hands of the common people. However, these instruments have been an age old tradition since the founding of our country. From hunting to protecting territories, guns have been implemented in our society as a means of survival. This ideal was so prevalent to the founding fathers of our country that they immortalized the principle that it is “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms” (The Bill of Rights). This guiding statement has been challenged time and time again, but to no avail. When it comes down to the fact of the matter, guns don’t cause
Following the tragic events of September 11th, 2001 the world was shocked, our country had been attacked. The United States of America was no longer safe, nearly 3,000 people were killed. Our nation's response, go to war with the country that caused all this heartache. Spend a decade looking for the man (Osama Bin Laden) that caused this harrendence attack on America.
