Only this month, 59 were killed and over 500 people were injured during a country music concert in Vegas in what is now known as the deadliest mass shooting in American history. Last year, 49 were killed and 58 were injured in a gay nightclub in Florida. In 2012, a mass shooting in Sandy Hook Elementary School took 27 lives, 20 of them being first graders. The list of these unthinkable and stomach-churning acts is quickly turning endless, forcing us to rethink why we truly have the right to bear arms. Many defend the second amendment by claiming we need this right for self defense, which is the most wretched part. When we look at what we have lost compared to what we have earned in this fight to keep the right to bear arms, this privilege does not seem worth the sacrifice of so many lives. In today’s world, we do not defense through guns but from them. Our policymakers keep trying to reach a compromise by putting in place certain regulations. “Some states require would-be gun owners to fulfill a firearms safety course in order to obtain their license.” “Such training courses, however, even when not required, are very advisable for the would-be gun owner, as they ensure that he or she has all the necessary information on liability issues, on safety, and even on care and maintenance of the gun” ( How to Get a Gun License 1). This lack of attention illustrates that despite the multiple tragedies that have taken place in our nation, some states do not even require a simple safety course that ensures the safety of our people. Furthermore, it is required that one must pass a background check. The questions asked on the test are the following:
“*Have you ever been convicted of a felony?
*Have you ever been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence?
*Are you an unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any other depressant, stimulant, narcotic drug, or any other controlled substance?
*Are you a fugitive from justice?
*Have you ever been committed to a mental institution?
The store [selling the guns] then calls the FBI, which runs a background check on the person [trying to obtain a gun] through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, also known as NICS. The background check can
Guns laws in America are one of the most controversial topics today that are dividing many U.S. citizens. Many people are ignorant to what new gun laws will enforce and what statistical data shows about gun violence. Future Gun laws will be used to control guns in America, making it restricted to own and buy weapons. Although some people say that stricter gun laws will protect people more than concealed carry laws, the reality is that concealed carry laws allow individuals to better defend themselves and their families.
of sixty-two mass shootings done by Mother Jones, about forty-nine of the weapons were bought legally! Twelve of were obtained through illegal methods, and the last one was unknown (Follman). Whether mentally fit or not, loose gun control laws allow those untrustworthy to buy guns and possible commit heinous acts.
December 15, 1791, the day America’s Bill of Rights was ratified, was the day the initial infrastructure for our country’s basic rights were established. Since then, firearms have been a highly deliberated topic. Even today, the debate over whether we, as a country, should institute stricter gun laws continues to be an ongoing conversation throughout social media, the press, and within our governing bodies. But, since the approval of the Bill of Rights, gun laws have continued to be restricted in order to protect the lives of citizens who reside in America. The initial catalyst for more rigid gun laws was the horrific assassination attempt of Ronald Reagan, which also brought injury upon James Brady who, due to this incident, later became an advocate for gun laws. Ronald Reagan’s potential rendezvous with bloodshed brought about the initiation of Brady’s law as a safeguard to prevent another incident of this kind from besieging our country.
Imagine being a firearm shop owner and supplying weapons to people you barely know. Although, there is a thorough background check done on the customer, there is still a chance of them using that weapon for malicious purposes. So, the laws the government has put on guns isn’t working to completely stop the use of guns for murder. In order to prevent this, the government should stop adding to and creating new gun control laws, and instead just abolish gun shows and to have a better and wider staff for checking the backgrounds of gun consumers.
Taking away guns from a country boy is like taking candy from a kid, it’s just not right! More often than not there are posts on social media about how “Obama is taking my guns.” Furthermore, Obama is not going to take your guns! President Obama talked about creating a stricter, safer environment. This topic often gets people fired up. Have you ever heard someone say that it is their right to own guns? They are referring to the Second Amendment and the Right to Bear Arms.
Deciding what college to choose makes this year monumental in my life, but hopefully not as controversial as the March 1789 in our United States of America. The second amendment of The Bill of Rights is the “right to bear arms”, and was passed by Congress in March 1789. After recent tragic events in our country the controversy surrounding the Second Amendment is just as debatable as ever. It reminds me of a Rahm Emanuel quote I learned in Government class, “You never let a serious crisis go to waste.” But with popular conversations, I believe that we should consider the fact that our founding fathers put this in The Bill of Rights for a reason. They should consider that when creating The Bill of Rights they believed that this amendment was
In the U.S. constitution, the Second Amendment states that "A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." (Cornelledu, n.d). This statement has created significant argument regarding the Amendment's proposed meaning. Gun control is believed to be a government policy or principle to regulate or limit the transaction and practice of firearms. Congress often do not accomplish the preferred result; therefore, the country is somewhat divided on the notion of gun regulations. Some advocate there is excessive government, while others feel there is insufficient. These two conflicting opinions leave the federal government open to a verdict on whether or not to eradicate one of our Constitutional rights, or to keep permitting people the right to possess a gun.
Concealed handguns are becoming an increasingly controversial topic in United States society as more mass-shootings, and even domesticated violence issues continue to occur. Citizens are torn between the use of a gun for themselves and their family’s protection, as well as the fact that ill-minded people may take advantage of the legalization and further increase violence at many societal levels. The thing these people lack to see is the fact that legal carriers have two main objectives, protection and safety. Not only would getting rid of CHL (Concealed Handgun License) increase crime, they would basically send a message that protection is not a priority among the government for their citizens. The government implements safety through police, and anti-concealed handgun thinkers fail to see that police are nearly never at the scene of a crime or an attack when it occurs, meaning protection is not available at all times. When citizens are given the green light to use their second amendment right, as stated by the United States Constitution, they can lawfully carry a concealed handgun and protect themselves from injury and even possibly death. This doesn’t go for just an individual, but also the carriers immediate area, family or whoever else needs their assistance. Adults should be allowed, when they abide by law, to carry their concealed handgun because it could make a world of change, especially regarding safety and crime.
Firearms are rarely used now for in justifiable reasons compared to the thousands of criminal homicides. In the rare event that a gun is legally purchased and registered, there is still a risk that the firearm could be stolen and used by those with the intent to do harm. However, homicides are more often committed through the use of legally owned guns used by the original owner. CNN reports that, “hospitalizations from gunshot wounds cost $700 million a year.” The rates of suicidal, unintentional, legal and homicidal gunshot wounds and fatalities may not be changed with or without implementation of more thorough and strict gun laws. However, there are still millions upon millions of dollars lost in the united states due to firearm injury or death. So, no one gets out of these firearm related events unscathed. The possibility of removing the ability for easy gun access could save so many lives. There should be a screening process put in place that is more thorough and difficult in order for an individual interested in purchasing the gun to be allowed to obtain one. There is only so much the background checks in the US’ current time can do, and it is incredibly limited. These checks will alert if the individual is a felon or mentally ill, however there is limited access to information pertaining to those who are seeking help for their mental illnesses and this information is even less if one who is mentally ill does not seek help for their illness, meaning they could go
Gun violence is unpredictable and can happen to anyone, no matter how old or young. Setting policies that regulate the manufacturing, variety, or possession of firearms to the general public can influence a decrease of chaotic gun violence. Some might think that taking away these privileges or firearms will just harm the public by leaving us defenseless but in fact will make us safer. Limiting the production and variety of firearms can benefit ending mass shootings and other related violence. Making laws or policies that are more careful about the possession of firearms will benefit civilian safety. Setting stricter procedures to obtain a firearm will help not get them in the wrong hands. Gun control is a controversial topic, but it needs to be brought up to end the unnecessary violence once and for all.
“There were nineteen victims gunned down--thirteen were rushed to area hospitals; six were dead. Congresswoman Giffords was in critical condition” (Frontline). “Terrorized students fled when they heard shooting in the hall, 188 rounds. Then a bomb went off in the cafeteria. As the two assailants enter the room and hunt for student victims, they had killed thirteen and wounded 23 more” (Frontline). News reporters uttered the two previous quotes following two of the most memorable and horrifying instances of mass shootings. The first is from Tucson, Arizona, where a man shot Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford from three feet away, and killed six other people. The second is from the infamous shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. America is facing a gun epidemic, and like any other epidemic, a cure must be sought. As other countries have shown, passing comprehensive gun control legislation can both cure a gun epidemic and aid the ending of thousands of gun-related deaths per year; in addition to ending some of the influence interest group have on legislation.
Guns have many uses in the United States, for example, they are using guns to protect civilians in the law enforcement department, they can also be used to protect a property or even for self-defense in a life-death situation. They are so needed that even the constitution states it on the 2nd amendment. However, due to many mass massacres in the last decades, especially taking account the mass shooting in California and Texas in the last 2 months, many opinions have lead the gun regulation into a controversy. However, something that must be considered into account in this debate is the political system the United States enforce, which is Federalism, and many would think, what has to be this with the gun regulation? The answer is that Federalism allows every state to enforce different laws in their jurisdiction as long it does not cause any conflict with the constitution. One example, could be the gun regulation itself because all states follow the permission to use guns, but they change the way they can obtain one. For these reasons, the main objective of this essay will be to analyze the different regulations in California, one of the states with most regulations when it comes to guns, and Arizona, one of the states with the less regulated gun usage. The main categories that will be examined are the types of restrictions and people who can and cannot own or carry a gun, their requirements that they demand in order to have or use a gun and finally, their rules that they have
Recently there has been an increase in high profile tragedies and puts in question if the government should reform its firearm laws. This is one of the most widely debated issue in the media currently. Both sides have strong opinions, those who are for more regulation believe that additional steps to be able to access a firearm is strongly needed. While others believe that if the government adds more restriction then that would be a violation of the second amendment.
According to United States’s current death toll So far in 2017 there has been more than 9000 people killed by those who have the right to be able to carry concealed weapons. If this issue doesn’t get stopped soon more and more innocent people will continue to keep on getting killed by guns. If enough people stand up for this law than people would not have to worry about letting their kids go to school without losing their life. Gun restrictions in the United States should be tightened because if not so more and more people will be killed due to people being able to carry concealed weapons. There are many reasons why gun restrictions should be tightened so are some examples on why they should be tightened. According to Katie Zezima, journalist from the Washington Post, in an article from October 20, “A Boston University school of Public health discovered that states that give law enforcement officials wide discretion to decide who can receive a concealed weapon carry has lower gun deaths than those who don’t” (A shall state is a state that allows residents to carry concealed weapons without a license, May-issue states requires the public to have a license to carry concealed weapons. “Louisiana, a shall-issue state, had a firearm homicide rate of 9.96 per members of Congress must come together to address the epidemic of gun violence so as to make sure tragedies such as the one at Virginia Tech and so many others never happen
The second amendment in the United States constitution, written in 1787, comprises “the right to keep and bear arms” (Cornell Law). Two hundred and thirty years later, Americans still actively practice that right. In spite of the fact that gun control is a divided debate, there are many reasons why there should be gun laws put in place. More than 33,000 people die from gun-related deaths in the USA every year, and that number has only been increasing (Everytown Research). Crime, domestic violence, suicide, and terrorism are major situations that are caused by the casual gun laws of America. The current gun laws set in place in the United States create major public health and safety issues for everyone in the country because of the fact that guns are too accessible to American households without proper qualifications.
