The second amendment in the United States constitution, written in 1787, comprises “the right to keep and bear arms” (Cornell Law). Two hundred and thirty years later, Americans still actively practice that right. In spite of the fact that gun control is a divided debate, there are many reasons why there should be gun laws put in place. More than 33,000 people die from gun-related deaths in the USA every year, and that number has only been increasing (Everytown Research). Crime, domestic violence, suicide, and terrorism are major situations that are caused by the casual gun laws of America. The current gun laws set in place in the United States create major public health and safety issues for everyone in the country because of the fact that guns are too accessible to American households without proper qualifications.
Lack of gun control has led to increased crime rates in the United States for the reason that Americans have the right to purchase and bear guns. There are approximately 12,000 gun inflicted homicides committed annually in the United States. This homicide rate is more than 25 times higher than the rate of other “high-income” countries such as Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom (Everytown). These numbers would significantly lessen in the event that strict gun laws were put in place. An example of stricter gun laws being put in place and being successful is the Australian National Firearms Agreement. The day following the Port Arthur massacre, the prime
The addition of strict gun control laws can reduce deaths and crimes rates by firearms drastically, as gun ownership decreases and new regulation can prevent horrific accidents from happening. Canada serves as a perfect representation of the benefit of strict gun control laws and how they help improve crime and death due to firearms in America. Canada has two main laws concerning firearms, the Firearms Acts and the Criminal Codes. The Firearms Acts pertain to the right to possess firearms, the means of transportation, and offenses due to violations of the act. This act specifies the rules of permits, such as where one can keep the gun, what happens to the gun in certain situations (like the death of an owner), and more. The Criminal Codes pertain more towards the three categories of firearms, non-restricted, restricted, and prohibited firearms. The Criminal Codes go in depth of what guns belong in what class and much more (Ahmad). The United States however does have laws pertaining to guns, such as Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act and Gun Control Act. The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act mandates federal background checks of those who purchase firearms, although Canada has more of a focus on mental health and addiction (“Brady Law”). Similar to the Firearms Acts and Criminal Codes, the Gun Control Acts cover a similar basis of the idea of regulating firearms (“Gun Control Act”). While Canada and the U.S have similar laws for firearms, Canada has more stricter and beneficial laws, and the evidence shows how that has effects on firearm deaths, “According to 2010 data available at Statistics Canada, over the past thirty years firearm-related homicides have continued to decline. Moreover, ‘[m]uch of the decline in firearm-related homicide since the early 1980’s can be attributed to a decrease in homicides involving a rifle or shotgun.’ According to 2011 data, [t]here were 158
Every so often the media and news feeds flood with reports of a mass shooting. Families mourn. In the days that follow, calls to action can be heard, and there is a demand for change. Sometimes minor legislation passes, but in the United States extreme change is rarely seen. Other developed nations provide an opposite comparison. Following the Port Arthur shooting in Australia and the shooting in Great Britain, both countries organized for significant gun reform.
Boom! The little boy kills his first deer while hunting with his dad, they’re both ecstatic, the dad experiencing all the skills he has taught his son over the years finally pay off, and killing his first deer with the same gun he used thirty years ago. The first firearm was made 653 years ago in 1364, to fire the gun, you had to hold a burning wick to a touch hole to ignite the powder, causing an explosion which sends the projectile out of the barrel. Since then, guns have evolved tremendously, in Germany, 1885, the first semi automatic handgun was made, allowing the user to fire shot after shot without reloading, until the magazine is empty. This gun was made for police officers around the world, allowing them to have an advantage over
Imagine being a firearm shop owner and supplying weapons to people you barely know. Although, there is a thorough background check done on the customer, there is still a chance of them using that weapon for malicious purposes. So, the laws the government has put on guns isn’t working to completely stop the use of guns for murder. In order to prevent this, the government should stop adding to and creating new gun control laws, and instead just abolish gun shows and to have a better and wider staff for checking the backgrounds of gun consumers.
“He’s dead, he’s dead” Katie Medley who was 9 months pregnant at the time is crouched behind a chair. She hears bullets flying, and people screaming, but nothing is as terrifying as when she sees her husband 's bloody face and she realizes he isn’t breathing. This tragic event took place at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, and it is just one of the many instances that call for more gun control. There should be more laws and restrictions on owning and operating firearms in the United States. The first reason is because automatic and other high capacity firearms serve to be too much of a risk for the public. The second call to action is that you should not be allowed to own or purchase a firearm without passing a well citizen test.
My claim is that gun control laws should be enacted. Its really not so hard for an American to get a gun and use it to harm others. Millions of people in the USA die or are hurt from from guns. Guns aren't making us safer there making us less safe. While there are countless reasons why they should be enacted the main ones are that lots of people die, people use guns illegally without licenses to hurt others and because people commit suicide.
There is a lot of controversy today about whether gun control should be taken further in the US. Whenever there is a mass shooting, democrats and liberals jump on it and use it for their own agendas, which in my opinion, is not right. They seize the opportunity to try to force gun control laws upon we the people. Thankfully, there are enough conservatives and others who value the constitution to stop these blatant attempts. Gun control laws are a waste of time and resources because they do not deter crime, they do not prevent criminals from obtaining guns, and they infringe upon the right of self protection.
In the US citizens are allowed to keep and bear arms. The second amendment of the constitution gives them the right to. Today gun control is a controversial issue causing protests and debates. Over recent events such as The Las Vegas Shooting, killing fifty-eight and injuring over five hundred, The Orlando Shooting, killing forty-nine and injuring fifty-three, Sandy Hook Elementary School, killing six adults and twenty children. Citizens now ponder if guns should be illegal. The real question is how much damage does this cause. Gun homicides are declining (VOX), but suicide with guns has been rising (Harvard Public Health). If guns do not become banned anytime soon, what elementary school will be next? Whose child will be the next one to end their life?
The issue of gun rights have been a popular debate in the United States of America. The side opposing the rights to own certain guns have been frantic trying to convince others to join them in the fight. Like most advertisements, the ads concerning the issue of guns rights have to be provocative and eye catching. The Moms Demand Action for Gun Safety in America, society created an advertisement around 2013 to persuade Americans to support the ban of assault weapons in America, however there advertisment fell a tad short.
“Someone’s right to have a gun,” says Joanna Wallace, “Took away my right to have a son.” (white book pg 25). Gun control is a growing problem and a nationwide tragedy. It has overpowered our society, due to the way individuals perceive the pros and cons of carrying a deadly weapon at all times. However, the policy of gun control is a procedure that must be passed by legislative sessions with many votes before confirming it to become a law. Even though owning a dangerous weapon can be used for protection and self-defense, the fact of the matter is ownership of a gun can lead to accidents, deaths, and crimes; ultimately, guns should be used only in certain situations if needed.
Gun laws. One of the most controversial things in America, due to the second amendment of the United States Constitution which gives the right to bear firearms. Recent massacres and hate crimes have been executed with some sort of firearm, however, the gunman has been taken down with a firearm. The fight between Pro-Gun and Anti-Gun groups has yet to cease, and who knows if it ever will. I know I can’t make a National impact, so I thought smaller, what about California State laws? I spent 3 hours reading through every single State of California Gun Laws, and found one that had an easy solution that could make a huge impact, whether people will realize it or not. Penal Code 29805 states that if a person has lost their privilege of owning a
On an average day, 93 Americans are killed with a gun (Everytown). Beginning with the National Firearms act of 1934, gun control has been a controversial topic in American society and politics. Gun control is a set of laws aimed to limit the production, distribution, possession and modifications of fire arms utilized by civilians. Presently, the United States outlaws the selling, and ownership, of fully automatic weapons but allows the distribution of semi-automatic weapons. Purchasing extended magazines, military style .50 caliber and assault style weapons is legal on a federal level. In Washington state, it is legal to openly carry an unloaded pistol without a permit. It is also legal to own a rifle, shotgun or handgun without a permit.
Gunrights and gun control is a big deal in America ever since the Las Vegas shooting and a lot of other tragic events that have went on in the past.”Guns don’t kill people, people kill people” This quote said a lot in the community and impacted it hard negatively and positively. A lot of people had things to say about this quote like “guns are what kills the person” really a person has to pull the trigger to make the gun fire so how can the gun be at fault. So really with this statement everyone needs a background check to keep people that intend to use guns for the wrong reason not to have one. Any person convicted of a violent felony and is released from prison is not allowed to have any guns when they come out as of 1934. Now if a felon can go 20 years without convicting a bad crime they can get a pardon to restore their gun rights.
You are in a movie theater eating popcorn, all of a sudden BANG, thirty people killed, your favourite place now a crime scene. Guns are dangerous weapons that can take lives, and already have taken many, therefore we should be putting stricter regulations on purchasing guns. The gun laws in the United States aren’t very strong, which makes it extremely easy to get your hands on one. Just across the border in Canada, the laws for purchasing a gun require certain paperwork that would not be needed in the United States. Being involved in a shooting, either directly or indirectly, has life-long, negative consequences. Making gun laws stricter and certain guns illegal will decrease the death rate dramatically. Guns are deadly weapons and their sole
May 4, 2017, Georgia Senate signed the “campus carry” gun bill. On July 1, 2017, Georgia’s “campus carry” gun law went into effect. The bill legalized conceal carry in some areas of public college and university campuses. Valdosta State University (VSU) will now allow guns onto campus. There are a lot of stipulations in the bill; That may cause the campus to have many gun-free zones. Guns will still be banned from student housing, fraternity and sorority houses or any room or class with high school students present. The conceal carry law is only for people with a weapon carry licenses. To apply for these licenses, you must be 21 years or older. Most students don’t even meet the age requirement to conceal carry. There are a lot of mixed emotions
