Seaworld
Have you ever been to Seaworld and looked at those cute little sea animals jumping around happily? Well, if you have been to Seaworld good, you should’ve seen the way the treat them. If you haven’t, even better, you’re not supporting Seaworld. Those animals aren’t actually happy, though. The way Seaworld captures their animals is terrifying, the young are taken away from their parents and hauled into nets! Seaworld shouldn’t be able to keep those sea animals, for example the animals have a never ending schedule, it is dangerous to keep them, and it is very expensive to feed and keep those animals healthy.
One reason Seaworld shouldn’t be able to keep their sea animals is that they have a never ending schedule. They have to do the

For example, killer whales are supposed live up to an average of 80 years (for both males and females) only live to about 10-20 years old, says SeaWorldofHurt. Also, the sea animals are all stuck in way too small cages which makes them annoyed. This makes the animals dangerous to the workers there, for example, a documentary, Blackfish says that an orca named Tilikum killed 3 workers. SeaWorldofHurt says,”The film exposes Seaworld’s horrific capture of young orcas from the families in the ocean, the misery of their life confinement to tiny tanks, and how this cruelty has led the frustrated orca Tilikum,to kill 3 human beings, although orcas in the wild would have never hurt a human.” This shows that the only reason the orca was attacking was because he wasn’t released into the wild.
One last reason that the sea animals shouldn’t be kept at Seaworld is the expenses. According to www.bbc.com, one bluefin tuna could cost up to about 77 thousand dollars, and one dolphin can cost up to 10 thousand not including the cost of the habitat or food. A killer whale can cost a million dollars, not including the tank or anything. These are big expenses for Seaworld and they might not be able to sustain them, which would make the animals starve, or make them cut the tanks down to smaller sizes. The tanks are already too small and make all the sea animals
The corporate officials of SeaWorld used facts to convince viewers to believe their credibility instead of those of BlackFish by different logistic angles such as their many years of being in business. They stated in the website that in the more than fifty years SeaWorld has been in business, they have built a diversified portfolio of 11 destination and regional theme parks which proves they are a well-rounded corporation. They inform the viewer that their programs and practices are based solely on the wellbeing of the animals; “Our advanced programming applies a broad range of best practices based upon behavioral enrichment, preventive health, veterinary medicine and facilities design and management. Our programs and policies are affirmed by numerous federal and state laws, including the Animal Welfare Act, Endangered Species Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act and other statuses”(SeaWorld Website). They make it their priority to accommodate environmental, social and economic sustainability across the company and throughout their employee culture, which is a huge part of having a thriving business. With this aspect of the business, they show that they are reliable and a trustworthy corporation. They state in the website how they have over 21,000 team members nationwide, which appeals to how the crew members are treated across the country, otherwise they wouldn’t have any employees. They make many
Most people today have visited or at least heard of the popular tourist attraction, Seaworld. These tourists may think of it as a place to see marine animals do trick, like killer whales interacting with humans in a fun and entertaining way- but do we ever stop to think about the treatment or feelings of these creatures? After visiting Seaworld and seeing the famous Shamu, the thought of how living in captivity affects the animal had not crossed my mind. After researching I am now extremely concerned with the way these whales are impacted by spending their lives in bathtubs and forced to do tricks for food, all while humans are blindly funding this billion dollar business.
If you have ever been to Seaworld you would have had to go see the Killer whales in fact its one of the top attractions there. Through the eyes of a child, these gentle giants seem to be happy, healthy, and enjoying a playful game with their trainers. The question is are they really happy, do they get treated the right way, and why have there been deaths and injuries. Many people wonder about these things and after the movie Blackfish came out more and more people began to question how well Seaworld treats their animals. “The truth is that Sea World keeps its animals for entertainment and money and helps no one but themselves.”- Animal Legal Defense Fund
Since its establishment in 1964 the world famous franchise SeaWorld has been subjected to various tabloid headlines and legal investigations following the horrendous attacks by orcas, also known by their more apt name ‘Killer Whales’. These incident range from minor to major, but, there has been rare cases of fatalities from the family orientated marine parks based in America.
Imagine a place where you can see your favorite sea animals. Whales, dolphins, sharks, even penguins. Doesn’t that sound like somewhere you would enjoy going? SeaWorld is what comes to most people’s minds when they think of this, but is SeaWorld really that wonderful? Is SeaWorld truly what it’s hyped up to be? SeaWorld claims to be a sanctuary for animals where they keep animals like killer whales safe from the dangers of the world. Well, SeaWorld should really get a dictionary because a “sanctuary” is truly not what they give these animals. Orcas are the main attraction of SeaWorld but they are also one of the animals that suffer the most. Orcas in SeaWorld lifelessly float in their pool with little to no shade from the sun. In the wild,
Should seaworld be shut down? It's a difficult question to answer, or is it? After all the attacks seaworld has had, sometimes it’s hard to know what’s fact and what's fiction. On January 6, 2017 one of the most popular orcas, Tilikum died at seaworld orlando, florida which is a fact, However how he did is hard to say. Seaworld is not up for doing the autopsy, but why? What is seaworld hiding? What else is happening right under our noses? Some might argue that seaworld shouldn’t be shut down because they claim they are doing differently as of this year, however there has been no official changes to seaworld since 2013 (the release of “blackfish)
It was a normal day on February 24, 2010 at around 1:30pm, Dawn Brancheau was working a “Dine with Shamu” show at SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida when things suddenly took a turn for the worse. While guest of the park watched in horror the 40 year old senior trainer at the park was attacked by a 22 foot long, 12,000 pound killer whale. The trainer was scalped, dismembered, her bones where crushed, and she was ultimately drowned by the massive whale known as Tilikum. This was a day that would forever change the way that the general public would view SeaWorld. After this horrific incident Tilikum was kept in a tank for a year that was so small that it limited the massive whale’s ability to swim to the point where he would float lifeless in the water for hours at a time. A lot of people still believe that it is perfectly fine to keep these top predators in captivity, while others believe they are best kept in the wild where they belong. While reading this I want you to think should SeaWorld be allowed to keep killer whales in
SeaWorld is one of the most successful entertainment theme parks in the world due to the impacts they have on communities, jobs, people, and animals. The behind scene actions, court involvements, false information, and unreasonable animal care reveal the dark side of the corporation which is in conflict SeaWorld’s mission.
Many people have began to boycott SeaWorld after hearing about their cruel and unethical treatment towards their Orca whales.
SeaWorld opened in 1964 along the Mission Bay in San Diego, stretching a total of 21 acres. When they first started, their park only had 45 employees, a few dolphins, sea lions, and two saltwater aquariums. Today, several parks are spread out throughout the southern United States in California, Florida, and Texas. SeaWorld provides various shows every day with special perks for high paying guests, such as swimming with dolphins and other sea dwellers. A majority of their shows include orcas, otherwise known as killer whales. Recently, these majestic beasts have been living up to those names, attacking, mauling, and fatally injuring the parks own trainers. Blackfish, a documentary released in 2013, gets up close and personal with these stories of attack, to bring us countless reasons why orcas, and other marine life, should be left to live in their natural habitats, instead of in the concrete cells they rot in now. Orca pods are part of a matriarchal society, the females are more dominant and this can cause disputes between the alphas. When orcas are confined to a small space, these fights can get out of hand, disallowing the least dominant one to run, resulting in injury and death to the whales. Over the past 35 years there have been four deaths and countless injuries, and each time SeaWorld has placed the blame upon the trainers, explaining they hadn 't completed basic safety procedures. Orcas should not be kept in captivity for many reasons. Firstly, they are
When you are the one seeing the whale perform tricks its fun to watch but when the whale doesn't do the trick right it's punished. According to Blackfish when a whale did not perform a trick like the trainers wanted they would not be fed (Cowperthwaite). The opposition may also believe that keeping them in captivity also helps to learn about the whales but they are wrong because we've learned worse things about the whales than good. In the documentary Blackfish when a baby whale was taken from the mom the whale made sounds no one else heard before. These sounds were caused by SeaWorld taking away its child. Marine biologist have also found out that the bent dorsal Finn means its unhealthy (Cowperthwaite). Keeping whales in captivity has told us many things but none are
All these animals have lived their miserable lives in captivity and they are not only used to living their lives in captivity but they have become fully dependent on SeaWorld’s
I propose that all captive marine animals in possession of Sea World be released to their respective habitats immediately. The evidence of their unethical facilities are abundant on many anti-Sea World campaigns. Over the years there have been approximately seventy incidents between captive Orcas and trainers or even Sea World guests. All of them stock piling into a giant reason why Sea World does not need to exist
In the documentary, it’s full of the opposition’s point of view. I want to take their side, but I need to know Seaworld’s view about all of this as well before making my decision. They were quite persuasive with showing how more emotional orcas are than humans. I want to know why I should also consider your side.
However, instead, SeaWorld teaches children that it is acceptable to tear away the freedom of animals, incarcerate them in bathtub sized “homes”, forbid them to establish territory and explore, and watch malnourished frustrated animals slowly go insane (Worrall). But one can say children don’t understand that! Then we must teach them to, for these actions are inhumane and by raising generations to come that allow such atrocious, awful actions to occur without consequences, is gut wrenchingly disgusting.
