An ongoing ethical debate in America is whether horse slaughter should be legalized in the United States. This debate grabs the emotions of many individuals and arises many questions. Horses are normally considered companions that are used for labor and events. Isn’t it inhumane to kill a companion? Aren’t there enough homes for our furry companions? In all reality horses are expensive animals and aren’t always used for their breeding purposes. Humane societies/rescues barely have enough room for neglected small animals, bringing in larger mammals is not plausible. Saving every animal will cause an overpopulation problem and increase the rate of neglect. Horses are being neglected, starved, abused, and even shipped across the country, banning slaughter houses is the truly the inhumane route. Slaughtering isn’t an easy alternative, but allowing them to suffer isn’t any better.
The practicing of animal slaughter is common and used throughout the whole world. Animals are killed for food consumption, fur, and leather. Animals are also used for testing. They’re tested with products such as cosmetic products, shampoos, lotions, etc. Many people are not aware of what they buy at the store. Their products could’ve been tested on animals. The meat and dairy industry exploit, torture, and slaughter animals. The dairy and meat industry is not a fairy tale, it is the definition of horror. In the dairy
Animal testing has been one of the issues that people are fighting overtime because of its moral. Even though some results of tests are successful on people, many people are still fighting for the animal’s rights. They believe that animals should have their own rights to live a free life where they belong, just like their species. In scientists point of view, animals have been one of the main subjects to test on, but a lot of them are currently looking forward to use and develop alternatives for the cruel act of animal testing.
Today, the food industry has not just altered the American diet, but it has also had a negative effect within the labor sector as well as the animals meant for consumption and the lack of government oversight. Eric Schlosser in Fast Food Nation, and Jonathan Foer in Eating Animals, illustrate the mistreatment of labor workers as well as the animal abuse that goes unseen within the food industry. Foer gives such examples of employees who work in slaughterhouses giving accounts of what goes on in the kill floors, and stories of employees who have witnessed thousands and thousands of cows going through the slaughter process alive (231). Eating meat does not have to be so inhumane for example, Foer quotes Frank Reese, who does not permit inhumane practices on his ranch that are cruel, and Reese believes that there are other ways of having a sustainable humane animal agriculture instead of the methods of the large corporate meat industry (238). Namit Arora in the article “On Eating Animals”, as well as Michael Pollan in his book The Omnivore’s Dilemma, address some of the issues that animals face once they hit the kill floor. The food industry has transformed not only what people eat, but how the government has neglected the issues of the wellbeing of labor workers and the animals that are processed for consumption.
Imagine one minute running freely on the vast green terrain surrounding you, then the next locked up in a cold, hard, cage. It sounds horrible, right? Who would want to be locked up with minimal area to stretch your legs, and have people staring at you constantly? I for one, would hate that. I imagine that most animals locked up would share the same feelings. I personally, am against animals being caged. They do not deserve that kind of lifestyle and should not have to live with it just because humans pay money to see it. Animals are suffering greatly from being locked away. When an animal is bought, traded or given to a zoo, the animals rights are stripped away from them.
Would you kill your best friend after years of hard work together? I believe horse slaughter is a necessary evil due to many different reasons.
Many people challenge the rules for several different reasons. It’s always appropriate to challenge the rules when the rules are unfair, or against what you think is right. You can challenge the rules to make them fair and equal for everyone. Just how the two excerpts, Animal Farm by George Orwell, and Texas vs. Johnson, by the U.S. Supreme Court. These two excerpts explore the issue of when it is appropriate to challenge the rules. Challenging the rules can lead to positive or negative outcomes. You can change the rules for a good reason, or a bad one, but it’s always better to challenge the rules in order to make them more equal.
About a year ago, I asked myself a question why am I not a vegetarian? After all, I am one of the green kids. I grew up with my vegetarian dad in a small town. I even joined a club called “Tree Huggers”. I knew that eating a mere hamburger a day could increase my risk of dying by a third. I knew that the 10 billion animals we raise each year for meat are raised in factory farmed conditions that we hypocritically wouldn’t even consider for our own cats, dogs and other pets. I knew that I was not alone, we as a society are eating twice as much meat as we did in the 50s. So, what was once the special little side treat now is the main course much more regular. What if I told you, that we can change our world through our food choices. The fact
Animal Cruelty is a problem that many ignore. People are oblivious to these animals and the negligence their owners show. Animal cruelty is an underlying problem in today’s society, and the only way to counteract these problems, is for this generation to do something about it.
Animal Agriculture is one of the main reasons that the human race has survived for so long. It has impacted us in many positive ways. But we need Animal agriculture cause without it, it would cause over population of livestock, less nutrients in the ground and helps with people who have allergies against plants and fruit. These three things all prove why we need animal agriculture.
Horse slaughter has a wide history starting as early as 1915 when the first bill was passed to prevent the inhumane slaughter of horses and donkeys for human consumption among many others to soon arise. The slaughter industry itself has always been secretive and tries its best to avoid public attention as it is a very controversial practice. For many years people of the UNited states have polled and voted to ban the slaughter of horses in the united states .It has been concluded that 70% of Americans oppose horse slaughter and do not think horses are raised for food or any sort of consumption. Though, various people do not know that horse slaughter is even conducted . Up to 79% percent of texas polled to be unaware of these acts in their own states even though Texas houses two of the last three slaughter houses in the United States .Many horses that enter the slaughter houses have been found to be in excellent condition and ranging from 8 to 15 years of age .Overall, since the USDA started recording horse killings in 1985, a total of 3,355,000 horses, ranging from racetrack Thoroughbreds to the nearly extinct wild horse, have been slaughtered in the US alone. Nearly a million or more American horses have been exported for slaughter to Canada and Mexico. Unfortunately the situation today remains nearly unchanged with roughly 100,000 horses being transported to slaughter plants to be inhumanely killed in unspeakable conditions in canada and central america.Currently,
“Four legs good, Two legs bad,”(Orwell 34). If four legs are good, are two legs better? In the beginning the humans mistreated the animals. That then caused the animals to rebel, with the animals rebelling they thought that it would make things better. The animals worked hard but the pigs became corrupt. By the end of the story the pigs were just as bad as the humans.
Becoming a parent to your biological child, adopted child, stepchild or even a puppy can change your entire world. Your goal is to raise them in a decent way and ensure protection as much as you can. It never crosses your mind that they could be hurt by someone or something because of their irresponsible actions. Individuals discipline children and teach them how to develop from their mistakes. There is no distinction between a child and a puppy, they both need some positive guidance. The main distinction is a puppy is conceived with four legs, people are conceived with two; yet we ache for the same love and assurance. Animal abuse is becoming more severe nowadays compared to the past, due to the fact the federal government is legalizing
Mahatma Gandhi a social activist once said “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” The way that people treat living organism shows how we may treat each other. Many people have different views on animals, some look at them as companions others see them as science projects. Each year 100 million animals are killed in U.S laboratories for medical training, cosmetic testing, and biology lessons. Animals are living organisms like everyone else and they have feelings too. There is no reason why these living things should be subjected to this cruel and unwanted torture just to serve the needs of people.
Throughout, history horses have always been there for humankind, but these four-legged friends have had an unfortunate experience in certain point of time in the United States. The reason is Horse slaughter which is a term that refers to the killing and processing of horses for human consumption. What makes this process sicking is in the name itself “slaughter” it’s a brutal and horrifying sight for a horse’s last moments on Earth. The torture for these horses starts long before they enter the slaughterhouses. At times, when the horses are transported by the horse meat industry, it is done under poor circumstances for the horse’s health; for instance long journeys, cramped spaces, and deprived of food and water. Then, when the horses finally arrive at the slaughterhouse, the horses are put under extreme temperatures and are left outside for long periods of time until the real slaughter commences. What makes it more black-hearted is that no sort of euthanasia is used during the slaughter for the horses, euthanasia is defined as a gentle, and painless death for horses, so that they do not suffer as much.
