How many times have you liked a picture about a cute puppy, but scrolled past the children in Romania, who are homeless? This simple question is not meant to make you feel bad. Thousands of Americans do this every day when they are scrolling through Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The real question, however, is why do we, as a society, tend to “like” the cute things, like the puppy, but ignore the real-life problems in the world, such as orphan children in Romania, a hot topic as of late. The answer is desensitization. Desensitization sits heavily in researcher’s stomachs when they see that most people like the happy family story, but cringe and don’t bother to click on the link to the War on ISIS. This is why social media is not a good outlet for people to display their lives. Social media gives an unrealistic expectation to how lives should be lived when all that is seen on Facebook is the “together” family, and not the “broken” family. There is no doubt that social media exhibits benefits. In addition to providing countless pictures of your neighbor’s cousin’s dog, it also allows society to see real news happening in real time. For example, during the elections, every American who had Facebook, Twitter, or a Times magazine subscription knew which candidate said what and when their next speech was.
