How many times have you liked a picture about a cute puppy, but scrolled past the children in Romania, who are homeless? This simple question is not meant to make you feel bad. Thousands of Americans do this every day when they are scrolling through Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The real question, however, is why do we, as a society, tend to “like” the cute things, like the puppy, but ignore the real-life problems in the world, such as orphan children in Romania, a hot topic as of late. The answer is desensitization. Desensitization sits heavily in researcher’s stomachs when they see that most people like the happy family story, but cringe and don’t bother to click on the link to the War on ISIS. This is why social media is not a good outlet for people to display their lives. Social media gives an unrealistic expectation to how lives should be lived when all that is seen on Facebook is the “together” family, and not the “broken” family. There is no doubt that social media exhibits benefits. In addition to providing countless pictures of your neighbor’s cousin’s dog, it also allows society to see real news happening in real time. For example, during the elections, every American who had Facebook, Twitter, or a Times magazine subscription knew which candidate said what and when their next speech was. Whereas many people see this as a hindrance to society, this is actually quite beneficial. For decades in history, citizens have been uninformed about what is going on in
As much as social media has managed to ruin our society, it plays a positive role for the public as well. Social media allowed people to use their networks as a form of reaching out to old friends and family across the world. With America being known as the melting pot of the world, our society has several people with family on the other side of the Earth. With social media in effect, this permits people to stay in touch with long lost loved ones and keep ties tight. Not only has it sanctioned friends and family to keep in touches but has granted people to relocate birth parents and unknown family members as well. Yes, social media has failed our society greatly but there is always a rainbow somewhere after a rainy day. Social media can play a positive role by bringing people back together.
Social media has been a topic of debate for years. Some people are strongly against any use of it while others like the instant connection it provides. A major concern over social media is the lasting effects it has on teenagers. Social media can affect teenagers through many ways including things like their self-esteem. Cyberbullying is a raging topic of discussion centered around teens social media use. It can also effect their people skills and create a lack of community involvement. Some parents think that watching what their children do on social media is an invasion of privacy but is your concern for their privacy greater than your concern for their safety? Thesis: Stay in the present moment, don’t let yourself believe you’re going to forget a memory because you didn’t document it through social media.
Everyone knows that lying is bad. Then why is it allowed on social media? Since you are a kid you are taught to never lie. Even though everyone knows this they still lie on a daily basis using social media. About 85% of people have social media. How many people do you think are currently lying social media out of that? Do you really have privacy when you send messages or post a picture on social media or is the government watching your every move? Social media has been around for over a decade and continues to grow. On social media people have the freedom to say what is on their mind, so why would the government need to overview everything said and done on the internet? The government wants control over its people. The first amendment gives us freedom of speech, but on social media the government overlooks every conversation you have. Although your privacy is being striped with the government breathing down your back, I do understand that sometimes it is necessary for them to check what people are doing online.
Social media has many positive effects on our society. Facebook and Twitter can be one prime example of a positive affect on social media. Through Facebook we can generally use it to keep our family and friends posted on how we are doing. For example I remember when Facebook became so popular during the time of Hurricane Katrina. During that time of devastation we were not able to communicate through telephone services, cell phone service, and beepers because all communication services were down. And at that time if you had access to a computer with Internet services we were able to communicate, post pictures and videos of each other by using the Facebook website. This is one of the positive examples of social

Many small business owners are wading in the waters of social media, struggling to figure out how to use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Snapchat (the list goes on...and on..) etc. to grow their brand. Although most small business owners are using social media in some capacity, it has become clear that developing a social media strategy is not as simple as it seems. It’s easy to believe that since millions of people are using social media, we should just be able to build brand recognition by simply posting content...right? In the beginning, there was Myspace; then there was Facebook; then there was Twitter; then there was Instagram; then there was Snapchat, and there will be many more. Social media has become so prevalent in society that we consider it strange when people do not have any social media accounts, and we choose to use said accounts to judge a person and their life. The average man or woman uses social media for entertainment, and some may use it to keep up with current events. But, primarily, social media is used for personal pleasure. Advertising companies use social media in an entirely different manner. Advertising companies, and their research teams, use social media to survey the users and their preferences, so they can “pop-up” appropriately. Do you feel like this invades your privacy? Good; because it does. Companies are able to scan through our search history and likes so quickly and efficiently because of that privacy agreement that nobody bothers to read. But, what if we could take this privacy invasion and reform it into something that could save thousands of Americans each year. If we allowed a service to monitor your search history in real time for depression and suicidal warning signs, would you let them? I would be willing to say that the family members of the 44,000 people who committed suicide last year would have wanted that if it would have saved their family members.
