It has been a long time since I heard someone speak of the American Dream out of the context of a political campaign speech or sarcasm. Hope for a bright future has been collectively lost among the majority of the Millennial generation and that makes me sad, especially as a parent. This current administration has been working very hard to dissuade the American middle class from investing in the future. For example, the current Tax bill that is in the house for approval removes many important homeowner deductions. Without these, people will have little to no incentive to spend their life savings on a home that will not benefit them financially in the long term. Many of us grew up in houses, with big yards and pets. Now, people have been priced out of the neighborhoods they grew up in. Los Angeles is a shining example of a major housing crisis. Homelessness is everywhere, rent prices are steadily increasing (5% over the last year according to Apartment List), and I don’t know a single working professional in that generation who feels prepared to buy a house in this city. In fact, Lending Tree did a study that shows less than 40% of millennials in this city own homes. After the subprime mortgage crisis of 2007 and the balloon payments of 2008, Millennials have witnessed horrendous lending practices that devastates the people around them. Borrowing such a large amount of money from companies that have been proven as dangerous seems a foolish act. Most Millennials
