Their just kids being kids, right? That’s what everyone says when you make a mistake as a kid. You’re told that experimenting is okay and you shouldn’t worry it’s just a phase, but what happens when it’s no longer a phase? What happens when it becomes an addiction? That is what has happened to 23% of high schoolers with tobacco products (“Smoking & Tobacco Use”). We all hear about the dangers of drunk driving, or smoking marijuana, but what about the dangers of smoking cigarettes. Cigarettes lead to addiction, pneumonia, stroke, and death. Tobacco overall, is an addictive substance with horrible consequences that should be banned for its health effects and the influence it has over teens. So, what are the health effects of tobacco? First we should know the dangers in a tobacco. There are over 7,000 chemical and 250 of those are known to be harmful (“Harms of Cigarette Smoking and Health Benefits of Quitting”). Out of those 250 there at least 69 that cause cancer (“Health Effects of Tobacco”). The types of cancer you can get from cigarettes include: lung, throat, liver, pancreas, and at least 10 other types. It can also cause other problems such as, the impairment of immune function and heart disease (“Health Effects of Tobacco”). In the United States alone, just cigarettes cause more than 480,000 deaths per year (“Smoking & Tobacco Use”). Smoking causes more deaths than HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol use, and motor-vehicle injuries combined (“Smoking & Tobacco Use”). One important fact to know is this number is not just those who smoke cigarettes but those who are exposed to cigarettes as well. The chemicals in cigarette smoke can lead to second smoke. This is when people around smokers breathe in the smoke given off by the cigarette. Just second hand smoke alone causes death of nearly 7,300 non-smoking adults a year (“Harms of Cigarette Smoking and Health Benefits of Quitting”). This is something for parents to think about. How do they think it affects their children. Not only can it cause health problems for their kids, but it can lead their children to addiction. When you are someone such as a teacher, parent, or mentor that smokes, you need to realize that it can really influence the kids around you.
Every day close to 6,000 children under the age of eighteen start smoking. If this pattern continues 6.4 million teenagers will likely have a premature death. Research tells us that smoking is incredibly harmful. Children often start smoking, as they see someone that they admire smoke. Smoking causes many health issues, but smoking at a younger age puts one at a greater risk for these ailments. Smoking is detrimental; adults need to realize they are teaching children a behavior that can kill them.
Regardless of consumer belief, smoking dramatically increases the chances of contracting many diseases - such as heart disease or high blood pressure. Although not every user experiences these diseases, it is well known that smoking can decrease one’s life time dramatically. As stated, certain components in tobacco increase the chances of high blood pressure and blood clots to form in the body. Concluding, respiratory problems in young children can occur through second hand smoking, these include asthma. Children that asthma effect increases from smoke, “Asthma turns out to be about twice as common in children exposed to high levels of second hand smoke” (Secondhand Smoke: Is it a Hazard). Not only does tobacco smoke increase other diseases, it also increases the severity of diseases already contracted as shown in the previous quote. To conclude, tobacco smoke

Hank, you know that you are my boss, a father figure in my life, a mentor, and one of my best friends. I couldn’t ask for anyone better than you and I cannot thank you enough for all the things you have done for me over the last two years. One think that I have noticed though is that you love your smokeless tobacco. Don’t get me wrong, where I come from almost everyone uses tobacco in some type of way, especially in the military, but you mean a lot to me Hank and I want you to be aware of the risk you’re really taking when you use the snus and chewing tobacco.
Smoking tobacco is probably one of the worst habits humankind has developed. Originating as a tradition of the Native Americans, practiced mostly on special occasions, smoking has gradually become a kind of mass addiction. Due to the efforts of tobacco companies seeking to increase their sales, people started smoking more and more often; the evolution of a more traditional pipe to a cigarette took some time, but eventually tobacco became more affordable and easier to use (you now simply need to light it up, instead of having to always carry a tobacco pouch, stuff a pipe, puff it, and so on). As a result, deaths and health issues connected to tobacco consumption became a worldwide
Tobacco is the third caused death in the United States. Four hundred eighty thousand children have died from tobacco intake and over two million adults have this past year. When using any form of tobacco, you are not only risking your own life, but you are also risking others. Second hand smoke kills people too, it affects anyone, but mainly it affects infants and small children. Imagaine growing old with someone you love and finding out you have lung cancer. If you were to pass away, you would leave your loved ones behind and that is always devastating. Eventually ones tobacco intake increases or decreases, however eighty seven out of one hundred smokers said it increased over time.
Smoking kills. Smoking can cause cancer and other bad diseases. Also, companies have made cigarettes in different flavors which are worse than regular cigarettes. People who smoke can be addicted. If you try to stop smoking cold turkey, it will give you headaches and stomachaches. I wanted to research this topic because I have some really close friends and they have family that smoke. Their great-grandpa died from smoking. Also, I noticed a lot of people are dying because they made the bad decision to smoke. Some people started to smoke when they were teenagers. They got addicted to it, and now they can’t stop smoking. I wanted to try to find a way people who smoke can stop. How can countries solve and stop smoking? This problem can be solved and it will be solved because countries are starting to ban smoking from certain places.
Many people start this habit because of peer pressure, family issues, anxiety and depression. Everyone knows that smoking causes cancer and it can shorten your life by 15 years or more. Smoking is a hard habit to break because tobacco contains nicotine which is a highly addictive stimulant. Teenagers smoke because they want to be cool. Many people who start smoking have a family member or close friend who smokes. Smoking leads to lung cancer, heart disease, strokes and wide variety of other diseases. Smokers experience more coughs and colds compared to non- smokers. Besides affecting oneself, it also has a negative impact on others around smokers which is known as second hand smoking. Also pregnant women who are exposed to cigarette smoke will have an increased risk of having a miscarriage or stillborn baby. There are over 4000 toxic substances in a cigarette. Smoking cigarettes are detrimental to everybody. Firstly, the effects on the user. Tobacco smoke contains at least 70 chemicals known to cause cancer (Cancer.org, 2017). The biggest risk that arises from smoking is lung cancer. It is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Canada. In 2017 21,100 Canadians will die from lung cancer, 26% of all cancer deaths (Cancer.ca, 2017). Secondly, the smoking not only affects the perpetrator, but also the people around them. The second hand smoke increase the risk for near people to get lung cancer and heart problems. Children are at a bigger risk because their respiratory and immune systems are still developing (Canada.ca,2016). Finally, it affects the environment. The smoke from the cigarettes contain carbon and methane, two chemicals that pollute the atmosphere. Smoking worldwide releases 2.6 billion Kg of CO2 and 5.2 billion Kg of methane. Also, cigarettes buds are one of the
Tobacco products are ever so threatening in the United States, where according to U.S. Food and Drug administration 25% of the deaths in men and women age 35 to 69 are caused from smoking related diseases (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 2017). This number was even higher among substance abusers and people with mental health problems (Bandiera, Anteneh, Le, Delucchi, & Guydish, 2015, p.1). Even if someone does not die from smoking cigarettes they are at increased risk of contracting an otherwise preventable disease. Due to an exponentially growing amount of people becoming affected with diseases related to tobacco use, the United States government were forced to take action to try and stop the progression of these horrible diseases. These actions have come to no avail, since people who are addicted to cigarettes are not going to stop buying them just because of a price increase. Banning the production and distribution of tobacco products will contribute to a
In the past few years teen smoking has lowered but is still a risk. Most of the teens like to smoke to show that they are cool. If they do smoke, wherever parents aren't they might be smoking a cigarette. The main problem with teen smoking is that it is bad for them but addicting as well. They get addicted and then they can't stop smoking. The chemicals in it, the addiction, and lung disease will kill teens if no one does anything about it.
For me growing up in central Illinois, tobacco was as much a part of life as were the cornfields we were trapped in by. My father for as long as I can remember chewed tobacco, so naturally I followed suit. Once I started drinking (and particularly in the Navy) everyone was smoking, so yet again naturally I followed along. Like a helpless little sheep I followed the crowd. It does not take much to persuade young adults that something is not only not bad for them, but they will look like a total and full fledged badass in the process. Tobacco for example, and more specifically cigarettes. Winston in their ad in an issue of “Field and Stream Magazine” published in September of 2017 is no exception. The tobacco giant is extremely persuasive in
Drifting tobacco smoke can trigger asthma attacks, bronchial infections, and other serious health problems in nonsmokers. For the 100 million Americans who have asthma, chronic bronchitis, chronic sinusitis, emphysema, or other breathing related conditions, it makes them especially susceptible to secondhand tobacco smoke.
Apparently, 45.1 million people smoke in just the U.S 318.9 million people in the U.S. That’s a lot of people that smoke just in the U.S. The sad thing about it is that the smoking charts just keep getting higher the conclusion to that is that people smoke their kids see it and find it interesting then they do it. It is a timeline of deaths ready to happen now do you want to be that bad of an influence on your child. People die because of smoking to be exact 443,000 people die per year. Tobacco contains 4,000 chemicals in it including 43 unknown chemicals that could cause cancer. Including nicotine which is something that gets you hooked on to it It increases blood pressure, raises body fat levels and much more. That one chemical can cause so much
My grandfather had smoked for many years when he was younger. Now that he is older he has become a victim of lung cancer. Luckily he survived, however, it was a scary time for me and my family. Tobacco has a huge history on how it started and what it is now. It has been around for over 8000 years, but the first medical reports submitted accusing cigarettes and tobacco of the cause of lung cancer only came out in the 1920’s. Many newspaper editors refused to announce this new discovery because they did not want to hurt the tobacco companies who advertised heavily in the media. Today’s machines produce about 9,000 cigarettes per minute while in the beginning they only produced 200 per minute. Now more and more people are starting to smoke due to tobacco companies selling cigars. Tobacco companies should be blamed for young people getting addicted to smoking and experiencing a higher risk of lung cancer.
