Preventable Death-Tobacco Use There are many forms of tobacco that are addictive such as cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco. If someone tried one of these forms of tobacco for the first time they could become addicted because of the high amounts of nicotine in each one. According to the Electronic Cigarette Consumer Reviews-2017 (2016), cigarettes contain anywhere from 8 to 20 mg of nicotine, and the amount of nicotine that is absorbed is less than 1 mg. According to the Mayo Clinic (2016), a cigar contains just as much nicotine that a pack of cigarettes does. The New York Times (1994), states that smokeless tobacco contains from 1.5 to 2.5 percent, according to Food and Drug Administration (1994). The American Cancer Society (2015), reports that smoking accounts for 30% of all cancer deaths in the United States, including about 80% of all lung cancer deaths. “Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women’’ and is one of the hardest cancers to treat. Cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and smokeless tobacco all cause cancer. Not only does smoking cause lung cancer but it causes other cancers as well. Hank, you know that you are my boss, a father figure in my life, a mentor, and one of my best friends. I couldn’t ask for anyone better than you and I cannot thank you enough for all the things you have done for me over the last two years. One think that I have noticed though is that you love your smokeless tobacco. Don’t get me wrong, where I come from almost everyone uses tobacco in some type of way, especially in the military, but you mean a lot to me Hank and I want you to be aware of the risk you’re really taking when you use the snus and chewing tobacco.
Smoking tobacco is probably one of the worst habits humankind has developed. Originating as a tradition of the Native Americans, practiced mostly on special occasions, smoking has gradually become a kind of mass addiction. Due to the efforts of tobacco companies seeking to increase their sales, people started smoking more and more often; the evolution of a more traditional pipe to a cigarette took some time, but eventually tobacco became more affordable and easier to use (you now simply need to light it up, instead of having to always carry a tobacco pouch, stuff a pipe, puff it, and so on). As a result, deaths and health issues connected to tobacco consumption became a worldwide

Tobacco products are ever so threatening in the United States, where according to U.S. Food and Drug administration 25% of the deaths in men and women age 35 to 69 are caused from smoking related diseases (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 2017). This number was even higher among substance abusers and people with mental health problems (Bandiera, Anteneh, Le, Delucchi, & Guydish, 2015, p.1). Even if someone does not die from smoking cigarettes they are at increased risk of contracting an otherwise preventable disease. Due to an exponentially growing amount of people becoming affected with diseases related to tobacco use, the United States government were forced to take action to try and stop the progression of these horrible diseases. These actions have come to no avail, since people who are addicted to cigarettes are not going to stop buying them just because of a price increase. Banning the production and distribution of tobacco products will contribute to a

Imagine seeing your young child cough upon inhalation of secondhand smoke and knowing that they too are inhaling the poisonous and carcinogenic compounds.

For me growing up in central Illinois, tobacco was as much a part of life as were the cornfields we were trapped in by. My father for as long as I can remember chewed tobacco, so naturally I followed suit. Once I started drinking (and particularly in the Navy) everyone was smoking, so yet again naturally I followed along. Like a helpless little sheep I followed the crowd. It does not take much to persuade young adults that something is not only not bad for them, but they will look like a total and full fledged badass in the process. Tobacco for example, and more specifically cigarettes. Winston in their ad in an issue of “Field and Stream Magazine” published in September of 2017 is no exception. The tobacco giant is extremely persuasive in
Tobacco use is by far the leading cause of preventable disease, disability, and death in the United States (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2011). The United States Surgeon General’s report stated that cigarette smoking is the major single cause of cancer death in the United States. This statement is so true today. Smoking a cigarette is an acquired behavior and that makes it the most preventable cause of death in our society. Cigarettes contain nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide, as well as formaldehyde, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, arsenic, and DDT. The main ingredient in cigarettes is tobacco. The nicotine in cigarettes is very addictive and when smoke containing nicotine is inhaled into the lungs, the nicotine reaches your brain in less than six seconds. Addiction to nicotine also poses very serious health risks. With all the toxic ingredients contained in cigarettes, cigarette smoking is not only harmful to smokers but to nonsmokers. When you are smoking a cigarette you are not the only one being harmed so cigarette smoking should be banned because it is harmful to those smoking and those who chose not to.

An overall understanding of nicotine and addiction as being a drug that causes addiction is being tested for behavior treatments and medications. If someone even takes one cigarette, even a puff, all of those chemicals will be inside of the respiratory system and the nicotine will hook people to the “thrill” of smoking cigarettes. People will find themselves in debt and in very poor health.
