Trophy hunting is the hunting of wild game for human recreation. Every year, thousands of wild animals are killed to be obtained as a prize and to be showcased. Instead of being treated as living beings in nature, they are treated as materialistic objects by humans. Endangered species are the ones who are greatly being affected by those who are trying to obtain them. Trophy hunting is most well known for its practices in African countries and ties to North America. Since the 1800s, trophy hunting has brought about social, political, and economic issues that extend beyond the American borders. Animals are a key component to their ecosystem. It is because of trophy hunting that they continue to remain endangered, “Trophy hunters still kill around 105,000 animals in Africa every year. Including 600 elephants and 800 leopards, at a time when every individual is crucial to the survival of the species” (Schelling). This is a clear example of how many animals, not on U.S soil, have had their lives taken away for human recreation. Americans, on average, import 126,000 ‘trophies’ a year into this country, according to National Geographic. This has lead to the long moral debate centered around trophy hunting that not just American society has seen, but has been discussed in a global spotlight. Making money has become a main goal for the government: some governments take an eager interest to know the price of a dead lion. “Big game hunters say they help support local
In America, deer are an animal hunted widely throughout our country. Each winter citizens have mixed emotions about the sport. Some say its barbaric and cruel, while others argue that it’s beneficial and useful. Although people may say hunting is cruel and barbaric, have they ever thought about the upsides to be gained from hunting? While this is a topic that can be argued viciously back and forth, I believe hunters win the argument. Deer hunting keeps the population down, protects farmers’ crops, boosts economic sales, betters a person’s mental health, and teaches lifelong lessons on respect. These are just a few of the amazing benefits that can be gained from hunting.
Big game trophy hunting is flat out one of the worst kind of violations you can commit as I personally see it. Knowing that humans kill animals just to show off or either claiming it as a "sport" is truly a sad situation going on. Big game trophy hunting should be banned because it is an inhumane and dangerous practice, they can possibly be killing endangered species, and wildlife populations immensely begin plummeting. Moreover what people must understand is that animals deserve to live just like us humans
"Outcry for Cecil the Lion Could Undercut Conservation Efforts." The New York Times. The New York Times, 10 Aug. 2015. Web. 26 Sept. 2016. It begins to explain the perspective of Mr. Dorrington. A nonfiction piece of emotion, so not actually true. It portrays a feeling of what he felt as many others when Cecil was killed. After it begins to explain what would have happened if someone were to want to buy game off of National organizations. In Africa’s case; “There’s only two places on the earth where wildlife at a large scale has actually increased in the 20th century, and those are North America and southern Africa,” [said Rosie Cooney, a zoologist who is the chairwoman of the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Sustainable Use and Livelihoods Specialist Group. “Both of those models of conservation were built around hunting.”] So it’s acceptable as a “sport” but when you think about organizations taking almost extinct animals and using that district as something for fun you decrease the animal species, whereas when you look where there are animal perseverations the large scale has actually increases.
Anybody feel like voluntarily waking up at the crack of dawn just to sit in the middle of the woods in a blind and probably see nothing for hours on end? Wait, what if I add that it’ll be in the middle of winter so the temperature will not only be freezing, but you’ll also have a frost bite approved wind slapping at your face? No takers? I figured that would be the response. You’d be surprised though, because when I was around five or six years old freezing temperatures and being stranded in the woods sounded like paradise, especially with my best friend, my Dad, was right there with me.
Hunting has become a staple of American traditions since the beginning of the first hunter/gatherers, to the Native Americans who have lived in the U.S for millennia, even all the way until present day. Much of today’s society looks at hunting as a cruel activity when in reality it has more of a positive effect on the environment than it does harm. There are an abundance of benefits that come from hunting. Some of the benefits of hunting are: it is the biggest contribution to conserving wildlife, the meat is healthier than commercially produced meat, many jobs are being supported out of hunting, and every hunter wants “to bag” the trophy animal; however, there are a few cons to this, which include poaching and interference by the activist
This is because, one, simply put, in our modern day Society trophy hunting or hunting in general is not needed, to include endangered animals Within the game hunting will also affect their overall environment, and trophy hunting is overall an inhumane
Hunting is the practice of pursuing wildlife in order to kill it. Individuals who hunt do so for a variety of reasons while wildlife activists oppose hunters’ views and practices. Many people in rural areas of the United States hunt in order to harvest lean, organic, healthy meat for personal consumption. Some individuals hunt because it is tradition and a significant part of their heritage. Others choose to hunt as a means to escape the ins and outs of a chaotic society while taking in the serenity of the great outdoors in a therapeutic manner. Some hunters enjoy hunting for the thrill and the challenge of the chase. Other reasons people hunt include trophy hunting, travel to exotic locations, spending quality time with family and friends, and wildlife conservation. Individuals who are against hunting typically argue that hunting is inhumane and is considered cruelty to animals. Due to the benefits of properly managed ethical hunting, hunting should be legal within the United States.
Hunting is a common controversial issue among people. Determining when killing an animal is necessary and ethical has mixed viewpoints. One type of hunting that generally creates feelings of animosity among people is trophy hunting. There are very few ethical theories and ideas that support trophy hunting. Trophy hunting is a form of hunting in which the hunter kills an animal with the main goal of taking a part or parts of that animal for a trophy. The majority of trophy hunting occurs in Africa, with big game as the most popular trophies, but trophy hunting also applies to non-exotic species as well. In this paper, I will start with introducing a recent incident involving the killing of a popular African lion, then outlining the main ethical issues with trophy hunting. Next I will analyze the trophy hunting from an anthropocentric, biocentric, and ecocentric viewpoint, and finally I will propose a few solutions that would make trophy hunting a more ethical activity. Trophy hunting has been said to provide many benefits to conservation and preservation of species but is ethically lacking; with some stronger laws and regulations trophy hunting has the potential to be both ethically acceptable and beneficial to the environment.
There are hunters all over the world that use the sport as more than just enjoyment and a goal to get a trophy. Over 200 million animals are killed every year from hunting for the purpose of food and land protection. Farmers who grow corn and vegetables need to kill animals that eat the precious
On the other hand, trophy hunting, which is “the selective hunting of animals for human recreation” , is a problem that can increase the risk of extinction. UK scientists confirm that hunters have the tendency to hunt the animal with the best genes. There is an intense discussion about the rightness of this activity because some argue
Hunting has been a part of life for many since the beginning of time, but in this generation some hunting has transformed into a barbaric and cruel practice. The sport of hunting has begun to invade the lives of many endangered species, which has drawn much concern. And in recent news, a Minnesota dentist was caught hunting a protected lion in Zimbabwe. The death of this particular lion has produced a deep shock throughout the entire world and people are now on the hunt for him to charge him for his wrongdoings. The article “US should forbid the import of lion ‘trophies’” not only informs readers of the recent crime involving the Minnesota Dentist, but also encourages a restriction that prevents hunters from bringing home their kills. This
Trophy hunting is an ongoing issue, there are 500,000 black bears in Canada. 29,300 are bears that are legal to kill every year. Activist not in favor of the bear killings try to stop bear hunter but do sometimes go overboard. About 15 activists have been charged but the charges have been dropped. Many bear hunters do kill for fun and for the thriller of it. This does cause a resistance to authority because many believe it is unfair to why bears are being killed for no reason, and how many of the bear hunters are
Although poaching is an illegal act, it is still a growing problem in the world because it is making the extinction of various animals more probable. Not only it cruel, but it affects the environment and ecosystem where these animals reside. Although various people, usually trophy hunters or those uninformed, argue that it isn’t that big of a problem, there are realities to it that won’t be stopped unless we act upon it and bring awareness of the situation.
Animal poaching has a bigger price tag than the trophy sitting on the shelf. Poaching is causing iconic animals of many continents and of our oceans to become endangered or even extinct. These animals that people have come to love and fantasize over may be gone before we are (Africa). Elephants, rhinos, lions, and zebras are the animals thought of the most when it comes to animal poaching, but many animals are poached. They are killed for only one quality, like their horns or skins and the rest of the animal is left behind. Poaching is a massive business that is ran by international networks, it’s estimated to make hundreds of millions of dollars (World). Not all wildlife trade is illegal, but it becomes a crisis when an increasing amount of illegal poaching is done and it directly threatens the survival of species in the wild (World). Since 1960 97.6% of the Black Rhino population in Africa has been poached and lions are extinct in seven African countries (Africa).
Humans have been hunting on this planet for over two million years. Our ancestors used complex hunting techniques to ambush and kill antelopes, gazelles, and other large animals dated back to times before Christ. People all around the world still carry on the tradition, but the view on hunting is not the same as it was back then. The world is so industrialized, and people think hunting is cruel and useless because you can buy meat at grocery stores. But in reality, it is the reason the wildlife they see are not extinct. Harvesting game not only benefits the hunter with the meat, but also the land, the wildlife, and controls the game population; therefore, without it wildlife would starve, and land would not be managed.
