Did you know that right around 35% of Americans are receiving some form of government assistance? Growing up, 1 out of 3 of friends were given food stamps or housing assistance. Welfare is given to a person if unable to support themselves or their families. Unfortunately, the problem with many people having this assistance is people abusing the process. Requirements are set for welfare to be helpful and successful for families. One issue that is happening is not having people working or saving up while receiving money or food stamps. The point of welfare is to have programs to help citizen’s get out of the hole to be able to live on their own. Drugs and alcohol have had an impact who gets accepted and who gets denied. Laws need to be placed so not everyone can have assistance if using drugs. Receiving assistance comes with mental and health issues that need to be brought to attention and taken care of. To never have gone through what some people have, it is difficult for the author to relate to. It is tough for people to understand why people do the things they do and why those people receive welfare. If welfare did not exist, an outrageous amount of people would be left on the street with nothing and no one to help them get through what they are going through. The author has family members that get assistance from the government and to see the family not have that assistance anymore would be heartbreaking and stressful.
