Its primary goal was to provide cushioning to the families who lost the ability to be self-sufficient during the Great Depression. Yet, as America slowly rose back to becoming prosperous and wealthy, a significant chunk of America's population stayed below in the transitioning social system. The welfare system started to become counterproductive to the government so that, in the 1990s, Clinton hastily came up with legislation to end welfare, more famously known as the Welfare Reform Act of 1996. As American taxpayer's, your funds contribute to welfare for others. Due to the large number of members who receives government assistants, it is not that simple to monitor every individual. But, I propose that welfare should be reformed. Society is abusing the access to social welfare and to change the downfall sure to come, the government needs to reform the accessibility and ownership of welfare because it defiles the reason why it was formed, it is creating a dependent nation, and effects taxpayers and people who really need government assistance.

Welfare Policy has helped an abundance of people in America. Sometimes, unforeseen events occur and assistance is needed. In today’s society many people are skeptical on the use of welfare, in the United States alone 35.4% people are on welfare. Most people may think welfare can be used to help people such as people who are ineligible to work or the homeless who don’t have a job but need help for the time being. Thinking about it from another view welfare can be used as a bad thing such as buying drugs. As of 2015 13 states can drug test welfare recipients and 19 are considering.

Also, with little regulations on government assistance, it is easy for people to do things like, sell their food stamps. Growing up, my mom was on drugs. She did not work, therefore she got food stamps and Medicaid. She would sell her food stamps to her friends, that way she would get the cash instead. Then she would spend that cash on drugs. Poverty is a social problem that affects everyone on an economic, political and social level. The problem of human suffering is one that we must combat strategically on many levels. According to the United Nations, “in 2015 more than one billion people around the world live in a state of poverty, lacking the basic goods food, clothing, and shelter that humans need to survive” (“Poverty”). There are a great number of areas that keep individuals poor, such as lack of resources, inadequate income, lack of education, language barriers and the high cost of child care. Being able to work and provide basic necessities is our basic human right and we should not be deprived of these basic human rights that individuals need in order to live satisfying lives. The government has the responsibility of helping individuals in need with the economic assistance to feed, clothe, house, educate, provide health care and decent wages for every individual. They should ensure that individuals have access to resources that will help them build a better future. There are several ways that we can work together to strategically find solutions to end inequality among the poor individuals in our society.
